Type: SHORTFICTION
Length: novella

Language: English
Note: Probably all four of these titles (variously fashioned) have been used for the story and/or chapbooks that contain it: • Futility • Futility, or The Wreck of the Titan • The Wreck of the Titan • The Wreck of the Titan, or Futility The latter, at least, has been used for 4-story collection first published in 1914 (see). According to Wikipedia, "After the sinking of Titanic [April 1912] the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship's gross tonnage." Wikipedia cites History on the Net; both sources are linked above. Concerning the UK edition in John Clute's collection (London: Arthur F Bird, 1912), SFE3 reports "text apparently identical to the above", the original.
Synopsis: The story is famous as foretelling RMS Titanic and its sinking, en route across the North Atlantic. The parallel story is the first half of the novel, whose second half is a human and legal drama featuring the protagonist-survivor. See the articles linked above. See also The Wreck of the Titanic Foretold?, edited by Martin Gardner (Prometheus Books, 1986; revised 1998). --SFE3

Year Title
1898 This is the first-published version of "The Wreck of the Titan". The 1898 publication may be the only one. It ends thus (p145 viewed at HathiTrust): (quote) Two years from the time of his [civil service] examination he was appointed a lucrative position under the Government, and as he seated himself at the desk in his office, could have been heard to remark: "Now John Rowland, yhour future is your own. You have merely suffered in the past from a mistaken estimate of the importance of women and whisky." THE END. The novel article at Wikipedia states both: • "After the sinking of Titanic the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship's gross tonnage." • "A later edition includes a coda. Rowland receives a letter from the mother, who congratulates him ...".
Futility
1912 Futility; or, The Wreck of the Titan
1912 April 1912 use of this title is known for the novella, not for its chapbook publications. Soon after the wreck of RMS Titanic (1912-04-14/15) the novella was published, with some revision from 1898, at least in US newspapers. Two such serial editions viewed April 2020: • Boston Globe, Sunday -04-21 to Wednesday -05-01 • Los Angeles Times, Sundays only, -05-05 to -05-19 (3) Bos. Globe one-line title: The Wreck of the Titan; or, Futility LA Times title: The Wreck of the Titan with very long subtitle
