1947ⓘTranslated by Georges Charbonnier and André Fréderique This story is in fact a tale by count Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué, "Eine Geschichte vom Galgenmännlein", published in 1810, and included in Ann Radcliffe's <i>Mysteries of Udolpho</i> (chapter XXXVII). The novel was translated from the English into French in 1947. The tale was later included in Jacques Van Herp's anthology <i>L'Angleterre fantastique de Defoe à Wells</i>, 1974, and credited to "Ann Ward Radcliffe".
