Note: The accompanying introduction may have been written on request of the publisher or the Polish officials to put the setting of the novel - unnamed in the novel, only referred to as the labyrinthic 'The Building' - into America (and thus away from Poland / East Europe): it is referred to as to be apocryphical in its last sentence. According to the 1981 bibliography on Lem by Franz Rottensteiner and Klaus Staemmler ("Stanisław-Lem-Bibliographie") up to that year in Poland there were 30,000 copies printed in two printings
