Note: This text, in its last stage, was published in 1846 in La Comédie humaine, vol. XIV, Études philosophiques, vol. I. It results from the fusion of the initial story entitled "Jésus-Christ en Flandre" (1831) with "L'Église" (1831), the latter being itself composed of two earlier texts, "Zéro" (1830) and "La danse des pierres" (1830).
