Abel Hugo (1798-1865) was Victor Hugo's elder brother. Sub-lieutenant at the fall of the First Empire, he became a staff-officer under the Restoration. His literary ambitions were thwarted by his brother's career. Yet his production was not insignificant, although consisting mainly of historical and geographical works. His only known incursion into fantasy is the short story intitled “L'heure de la mort” (“The Hour of Death”), inspired by his stay in Spain with his father, Empire general Joseph Léopold Sigisbert Hugo (1773‑1828).
