David Edward Nell was born in Kensington, Cape Town, South Africa. He started writing at the age of seventeen. When he was eighteen he won a provincial Eisteddfod award for creative writing. After a nine-year lapse from writing, in which time he studied and became a software developer, he returned to writing in 2012. As an editor and anthologist, he is best known for Miseria's Chorale.
