G. S. Hargrave, a native of Indiana, attended public schools there until 1966, when his family relocated to the West Indies. He completed his secondary education at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral School, Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1968, and enlisted in the U.S. Army midway through the following year. He spent all of 1970 with the 459th Signal Battalion in the Khanh Hoa Province of the former Republic of South Vietnam. After his discharge in 1972 he attended Indiana University, majoring in Fine Arts and Literature. He graduated with a BA from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1976.
The author's earliest published stories, all in the mystery genre, appeared in the United States, Germany, and Japan during the 1980s. A lengthy hiatus from writing followed. When taken up again, the author turned his attention to science fiction and fantasy; his recent stories often combine elements that would more commonly distinguish one sub genre of speculative fiction from the other.
The author currently lives and works in northwest Indiana. He's also an artist and an improvisational guitarist.
