Born in 1898 as "Roy August Barsted, Jr.", served in World War I. (Our bibliography page says he was born in Missouri, but FindAGrave claims he was born in Glencoe, Cook County, Illinois, USA.) He later changed his name, keeping his initials. He became friends by mail with Marion Zimmer, and asked her to marry him, to which she agreed. "Brad was startled at how young she was; they had corresponded for years but never met." (Rachel E. Holmen) They were married Oct. 26, 1949. They separated in 1962 and divorced in 1963 or 1964 (sources disagree). He died in 1966, and is buried in Rochester Texas.

Some of the philosophical excerpts at the beginnings of chapters in "The Fall of Atlantis" come from Robert's unpublished papers.
