Astonishing Stories was the sister publication to Super Science Stories; AS concentrated on short fiction, while SSS pretty much stuck to short novels. The first two years of AS were edited by an extremely young Frederik Pohl (20 years old when the first issue appeared in February 1940.) Although the cheapest genre magazine on the stands, it still managed to publish stories of generally good quality, including some of E. E. Smith's Vortex Blaster stories, as well as Wollheim's Mimic (later made into a motion picture).
