Two magazines were supposed to have been called Star in the early 50's: one was to be edited by William Tenn for Gnome in 1950, the other one eventually saw the light of day as Cosmos in 1953. The magazine cataloged here was edited by Frederik Pohl for Ballantine in 1958 and was supposed to be a continuation of their successful line of eponymous paperback anthologies (only three had been printed by 1958.) The first issue of the projected quarterly was much delayed and its sales were disappointing, so by the end of 1958 Ballantine decided to go back to the anthology format, which lasted for another three issues.
