Introduction

Gernsback's Amazing Stories, which began in 1926, was published through his company, Gernsback's Experimenter Publishing Company. In 1929, he lost control of the Experimenter when it was acquired by Bernarr Macfadden. Macfadden then booted Gernsback out of the company, starting a period of competition with the early science fiction magazines.

Gernsback countered by starting two new magazines Air Wonder Stories and Science Wonder Stories, later merging them into a new magazine simply called Wonder Stories. All featured Gernsback's loyal artist, Frank R. Paul on every cover. It was through Wonder Stories that Gernsback formed the Science Fiction League in 1934, which helped to organize early fandom. Gernsback sold the magazine in 1936 and its name was changed to Thrilling Wonder Stories (a change made to bring its title in line with the other "Thrilling" magazines published by the new company).
