Magazine:Fantasy & Science Fiction, July 2007

This seems a reasonable place in a way, so:

  1. The July 2007 issue is in the DB twice: THMGZNFFNT2007 and THMGZNFFNB2007 - and I see both tags are created in a nonstandard way. Can somebody more knowledgeable (preferably with access to the actual issue) fix it?
  2. Also, I guess that it's already time to join the 2005, if not 2006, issues into one common yearly title entry...

I don't have a copy of the issue but the rest of it is easy enough to deal with. The publications are
  • The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July 2007
  • The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July 2007
and as you noted - it's a duplicate. I see the contents are a little different but let's first deal with the tags. Starting from Main Page I click on Magazines and then see that "Fantasy & Science Fiction" is on the page in two places but both of them go to Magazine:Fantasy & Science Fiction where I see that issues are linked up through May-2007 meaning the page is missing both June and July. "Edit" on the page shows
|[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?FSFJAN2007 Jan]
|[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?FSFFEB2007 Feb]
|[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?FSFMAR2007 Mar]
|[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?FSFAPR2007 Apr]
|[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?FSFMAY2007 May]
| '''Jun'''
| '''Jul'''
I think I see a pattern there and add the links for June and July.
Part 2 - Unfortunately, I can't tell which of the two July issues is "better" but using edit-pub one is them is now FSFJUL2007 and the other is FSFJUL2007B and they link to each other via pub-notes. Whoever verifies this can pick the better record and delete the other.
Part 3 - June, 2007 - oops, it's not in ISFDB and so I remove it from the wiki page.
Part 4 - Gordon_Van_Gelder's page shows that we need to merge the titles. I do an advanced title search for
  • Author = Gelder
  • Title = 2007
  • TType = EDITOR
That pulls up the records I wanted and 2007 is set. Repeat that for 2006 and 2005 with the only extra work was a title-edit to change the title to "2006" instead of April, 2006, etc. One oddity is the magazine titles are "Fantasy & Science Fiction" while the by-year title use "Fantasy and Science Fiction".
Now that 2007 is merged I could use diff-pub on July-2007 and the only difference is
  1. 141: PowerSuit [SHORTFICTION]
  2. 141: PowerSuit(TM) [SHORTFICTION]
Hmm - visually the publication contents look very different. Dup-Candidates to the rescue cleans up a lot of it, there were also two author records for Graham_Andrew which got merged. I personally would go with the A record over B because whoever added A also went to the title records and added them to series while the "B" version of the magazine B had two typos in author names, etc.
I also learned that diff-publications fails to catch changes in author names and fails to catch small differences in the titles such as that one is a member of a series while the other is not. Marc Kupper (talk) 23:39, 5 Jun 2007 (CDT)
ps: As the only difference is PowerSuit vs. PowerSuit(TM) I decided to delete FSFJUL2007B and added a note to FSFJUL2007 asking that whoever verifies the magazine to double check this story title. Marc Kupper (talk) 00:00, 6 Jun 2007 (CDT)
