Series talk:New Writings in SF

I've started a cleanup of titles in this series. Each publisher has presented the titles in a different format and some of the publishers have used several (using #1 for purposes of illustration):

  • Dennis Dobson
    New Writings in S-F 1
  • Corgi
New Writings in S.F.—1 (volumes 1-15)
New Writings in SF—1 (changed by #18, or beforevolumes 16-22)
New Writings in SF — 1 (volume 23)
New Writings in SF-1 (volume 24, only one to use a hyphen rather than an em-dash)
New Writings in SF 1 (changed by #30, or beforevolumes 25-30)
  • Bantam
    New Writings in SF 1
  • Sidgwick & Jackson
    New Writings in SF (1)
New Writings in SF 1 (Reginald1 has this for 22-24, Currey has the other form)

The above titles are determined from the Reginald1 and Reginald3. Currey only details the Bulmer edited volumes and disagrees with Reginald3 on the title of volumes 22-24. I have assumed that Reginald is correct until we have a primary verification.

To further complicate the Corgi editions, editors have added those with a dash as either a hyphen "-", an em-dash "—" or a double dash "--". Additionally, spaces may or may not be present on each side of the dash. Assuming that all of the volumes have the same symbol, I'd like to suggest that we harmonize these (at least the title records). Of course if they are truly different from volume to volume or printing to printing, we can leave the variation. In the list below of copies that need verification, I have not listed those that use a single hyphen.

Below are the titles that I suspect are incorrect, or should be verified. I'm keeping a master list here since several of these have multiple primary verifications.

  • 1
    • Bantam edition as "New Writings in S-F 1", should it be "New Writings in SF 1"?
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-1", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—1"? (hyphen vs em-dash)
    • Corgi reprint (1970) as "New Writings in SF 1", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—1"?
  • 2
    • Corgi reprint (1965) as "New Writings in S.F.-2". (hyphen vs em-dash) Can it be merged with "New Writings in S.F.—2"
    • Corgi reprint (1970) as "New Writings in S.F.-- 2". Is it really a double dash and space? Can it be merged with "New Writings in S.F.—2"?
  • 3
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-3", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—3"? (hyphen vs em-dash)
    • Corgi reprint (1970) as "New Writings in S.F.-- 3". Is it really a double dash and space? Can it be merged with "New Writings in S.F.—3"?
  • 4
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-4", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—4"? (hyphen vs em-dash)
  • 5
    • Bantam edition as "New Writings in S- 5". I expect it should be "New Writings in SF 5".

    • Corgi reprint (1971) as "New Writings in S.F.-- 5". Is it really a double dash? Can it be merged with "New Writings in S.F.—5"?
  • 6
    • Bantam edition as "New Writings in SF-6". I expect it should be "New Writings in SF 6".
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-6", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—6"? (hyphen vs em-dash)
  • 7
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-7", should it be "New Writings in S.F.—7"? (hyphen vs em-dash)
  • 8
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in S.F.-- 8". Only a question of the double dash and space.

  • 11

  • 19
    • Dobson edition as "New Writings in SF. 19", should it be "New Writings in S-F 19"? As this is the first printing I have already set up the canonical title assuming an answer of yes, but not the publication record.
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in SF 19". should it be "New Writings in SF—19"?
  • 20
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in SF -- 20". Only a question of the double dash and spacing. This is the first edition and I've set up the canonical title of this volume as "New Writings in SF—20", but not the publication record.
  • 21
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in SF 21", should it be "New Writings in SF—21"?

  • 25-29
    • Corgi editions in the form of "New Writings in SF 25" Reginald3 shows that the format for Corgi changed by 30, but it isn't clear when the format changed.
  • 30
    • Corgi edition as "New Writings in SF #30", should it be "New Writings in SF 30"? As this is the first printing I have already set up the canonical title assuming an answer of yes, but not the publication record.

This came out of this discussion about the 3 Bantam volumes that have different contents and I'm not detailing them above. I have unmerged them from the UK titles and not re-merged or made variant pending the outcome of that discussion.

I'm going to start leaving notes on the primary verifiers' pages, directing them here for the dash discussion. We can strike through the entries in the above list as each individual edition is resolved.

So can we agree on a canonical form of the dash for the Corgi editions? --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 12:51, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

I dug out my (complete) set of Corgi 1st printings. The title pages of the first 15 have "New Writings in S.F.—nr" (with em-dash). Numbers 16 - 22 have "New Writings in SF—nr" (drop the dots in "S.F."). Number 23 has "New Writings in SF — 23" (adds a space before and after the em-dash). Number 24 has "New Writings in SF-24" (drops the spaces and replaces the em-dash with a hyphen) and numbers 25-30 have "New Writings in SF nr" (replaces the hyphen with a space).
I only have two of the Dobson editions (#17 and #19, not verified yet). Both have the title as "New Writings in S-F nr". If necessary I can do the edits for these. --Willem H. 14:24, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Willem. I've made adjustments to some of the records and the list above. Most of these have multiple primary verifiers, though some may be inactive. Unless you object, I'll go ahead and update the Corgi records if I can get assent from the other verifiers. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:46, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
Please do. No need to inform me of these changes of course, I already know. Thanks, --Willem H. 19:59, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
I have four Dobson editions, #13, #17, #18 and #19. You can add #13 and #18 to "New Writings in S-F nr" format as Willem describes above. I have changed the records accordingly, being the first verifier for those four titles. --Dirk P Broer 09:11, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
