  • There is not a comma in front of the and/or+last item in a list.
  • Three dot ellipsis is never preceded by a space, but is followed by one. No space between ellipsis and a following punctuation mark. Never followed by an additional period. capitalization of following words depends on whether it is the start of a new entire sentence.
  • prefixes. All prefixes are written directly attached to their word without a hyphen (e.g. exministro, antimafia), except when attached to a capitalized word or a number, in which case they are hyphenated (e.g. pos-Gorbachov, sub-21). However, in the case where the prefix is attached to a group of words, the prefix is not hyphenated nor are the other words (e.g. ex primer ministro, pre Segunda Guerra Mundial).

Write a comma between the name of a series and the number of the volume within it: Biblioteca de Autores Españoles, 24.

DATES. Order is day, month, year. 31 Dic 1992 - 31 de dic de 1992

A QUOTation is preceded by a colon, surrounded by comillas and the beginning is capitalized. colon BEFORE dialogue, comma after.

A colon within a sentence is never followed by a capital letter.

Titles and subtitles are separated by a colon, with the start of the subtitle not being capitalized.

Punctuation of dialogue.

ANGLE QUOTES. «Es imprescindible —señaló el ministro— que se refuercen los controles sanitarios en las fronteras». note: interruption between dashes without closing quotes.

PERIOD goes AFTER QUOTATION MARKS. When a quoted text ends w/exclamation point, question mark, or ellipsis, this is inside and an additional period goes after.

Possible to substitute quotation marks for italics in handwriting; would be used here because italics not possible?

ellipsis at the start of a sentence is followed by a space. There is NOT a space after ellipsis when followed by quotation mark. Do not place an additional period after final ellipsis. However, if ellipsis follows abbreviation, add three dots to the existing one.

Final punctuation of a parenthetical sentence. Inside EXCEPT for period (same as with comillas).

when em-dashes are used to signal a parenthetical interruption of a sentence, the first dash has a space before but not after, the second the reverse, thus: Sentence —interruption goes here— more sentence.

The DPD does not mention anything about dashes being used as separators in titles. However, some magazines seem (mostly on the evidence of secondary sources) to do this; more investigation is needed. Suggestion: if the original source is available, copy their punctuation exactly (do they use hyphen, en-dash, or em-dash? is there a space before or after the dash?). If you do not have the original source, follow the practice used on the AEFCFT website and the site of the magazine Supersonic: use an en-dash with a space both before and after it.

NO PUNCTUATION IN FRONT OF AN "O" in a title
