Welcome!

Hello, Alippert, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Annie 19:50, 9 June 2020 (EDT)

Science, Fantasy, and Science Fiction

What exactly are you trying to add here? If I understand your format, this is supposed to be a record for 4 separate issues? If so - this is not how the DB work - we create separate record for each issue. Would you like to add a single issue instead? Thanks and welcome again! Annie 19:52, 9 June 2020 (EDT)

Hello Annie. Apologies, this totally fell off my radar. This was the first time I ever felt a need to add or edit anything at isfdb and clearly didn't do it the right way. My intent was to add the fanzine "Science, Fantasy, and Science Fiction" created by Frank Dietz JR. If I understand your previous comment, then each issue needs to be its own entry. Do they then all get linked to an umbrella entry for the title of the serial or linked to the creator? thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Alippert (talkcontribs) .
No worries - magazines and fanzines can be confusing even when you had been here for a long time :)
Yes, we need every issue to be added as a separate entry. Then they get connected in two ways:
  • The ones from the same year and editors will get merged on the title level to create an yearly record such as this one for example.
  • A series is used to bind the yearly records together to form the complete record.
So using your old record above as a base, you need to do the following changes while creating a submission for issue #1:
  • In the title, instead of "Science, Fantasy, and Science Fiction", put "Science, Fantasy, and Science Fiction, Vol. 1, No. 1" (the spelling comes from here.
  • For the author put "Franklin M. Dietz, Jr." (note the dot)
  • In the series field, put "Science, Fantasy, and Science Fiction" - this will create the overall series/magazine record
  • List only the cover artist for that issue
  • Add the link to this issue this one to the Publication level Web pages (this is the one lower on the page)
  • The date should come from the magazine: 1948-04-00 (as April is printed on the magazine)
  • List only the page number for that issue, add a note on sources and the price (as this is a Canadian magazine, you use C$0.15)
  • "ph" is usually a book format. We have a lot more magazine formats - so see if something else is not closer to it (digest?quatro?)
  • Add the contents (if you want to) - you can also do that later or leave it for someone else
And then do the same for the other 3 issues - one New Fanzine submission per issue. Once they all are in the DB, the series will tie them together and if there are more than one in the same year, we will do the yearly records as a second step (there is always a second step).
Let me know if you have any questions. If you want to try, go ahead and try to submit one issue, wait for it to be approved and corrections made if needed, then do the rest. If something is wrong, we can always fix it. :) Annie 18:44, 4 February 2021 (EST)
Great! This is all helpful and sounds familiar to some types of library systems. I will work on it! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Alippert (talkcontribs) .
The Help Page also has some tricks and tips and when you are editing or adding new, there is a question mark next to each field that have even more info - a bit on hover and a lot more if you click on it. And do not hesitate to just post back here if I can assist with anything :) And yes - a lot of our conventions are library-like -- we are a bibliography after all :)
A small housekeeping item for the Talk pages - when posting, sign your message with ~~~~ or the sign button - the one before the last on the button list at the top :) Annie 19:09, 4 February 2021 (EST)
Just a quick note: I am putting in the 6 issues of Dietz' short-lived fanzine momentarily. On the price I wanted to note that he lived in NYC (the Bronx) and the address listed in the fanzines are either New York or Iowa. So the price would be US and not Canadian currency. Oops. My bad - misread an advertisement on page 2 to be the address. Good catch. Annie 14:00, 11 February 2021 (EST)

Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation

As everyone is stepping around it (we usually approve faster but when something looks weird, it can stay on the board for a bit until someone decides to work on it). So let me grab it and come talk to you :)

Comic books and graphic novels are not eligible for addition UNLESS they are from an author who is above the threshold (and even then, it is unclear which has priority but let's say it is the "if it is a book and from one of the authors, it is in"). Butler is definitely above threshold. So here is the big question: how much of the text is hers or is this just "based" on her novel. Is there anything in the book about who actually wrote the words for this GN? Annie 15:40, 8 February 2021 (EST)

Thanks for looking into it. I can't speak to the actual text itself as I don't have a copy in front of me and am working from catalog entries and such. My understanding is that it is an adaptation, and not just "based on", turning Butler's work into a graphic novel. Jenning's won the Eisner award for his work on the Butler adaptations and I should also note that another adaptation is already in ISFDB on Jennings page: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?2778967. Yeah, I know it is there now - which does not mean it should be. We are having a discussion over in R&S at the moment if we want to allow these (or even the existing one needs removing) so give me a few days - I will come back to you with the result (for now anyway).
