Welcome!

Hello, Cbroschell, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 09:52, 20 June 2020 (EDT)

Keith Laumer's Retief

Hi. Welcome, and apologies for the delay in getting to your submission of Keith Laumer's Retief. I have accepted it and have made some changes. Some of those changes are minor and are related to ISFDB standards that you should be aware of. A couple of others were more complicated than that and are a judgment call on my part, so I want to discuss them with you. In all cases, feel free to dispute, question, or further fix up anything that I have done. Our goal is to have the best and most complete data, not to impose anyone's will on anyone else!

And sorry that this very first communication is so long! I couldn't help myself. Don't let it put you off. :-)

First, the minor, standards-related things:

  • I changed the type from ANTHOLOGY to COLLECTION. We use the latter for for compilations of short fiction all attributed to the same author(s) and the former for compilations where the collected works are by different authors. I also noted Christopher Broschell as the editor.
  • I changed the publisher name from "Library & Archives Canada" to "Library and Archives Canada". This isn't anything you did wrong. We try to minimize the variations on publisher names, and we have records for both "&" and "and". It looks like we have a few more using "and" than "&", and also the site itself uses "and", so I'm going to normalize everything to use that.
  • I removed tp page count and added a note about Amazon print length. For unpaginated things (ebooks and audio), we don't record a number of pages. Where a source tells us the equivalent printed page count, we record that in the notes. I used Amazon's information for the Kindle book here (they say 374 pages), rather than the length of the original paperback.
  • I added "$" to price. All prices should include currency.
  • I fixed the cover Image URL to be link to Amazon image, rather than to the product page. These need to be links to image files (.jpg, .gif, .bmp, etc.) instead of links to full web pages.
  • While I was looking at Amazon's page for the ebook anyway, I recorded Amazon's ASIN for the ebook as an external identifier.

The more complicated changes involve the series and subtitle information. Some of this is driven by what we already had for other entries in the series. It looks to me like there are two different series, Worlds of If Collection (printed on the covers, also shown in the interior) and Giants of Sci-Fi Collection (not seen via Look Inside, but Amazon clearly lists this book and others that way). We have a record for Philip K. Dick as another collection in the "World of If Collection" series. Amazon knows about that book, and does NOT mark it as being in "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection". I did find some other books on Amazon that are also "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection", and those all have "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection" on the cover. See, for example, A Compendium of Margaret St. Clair, The Essential Rog Phillips, and Pioneering Women of Science Fiction.

So I think that this Retief collection belongs to "Worlds of If Collection" and not to "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection", unless you see contrary evidence on your copy.

Then we get to run into the ISFDB notions of "title series" and "publication series". In a nutshell, for the former, what constitutes the series is intrinsic in the works; the series would continue to be the same no matter who publishes an edition of the title. For the latter, the series is a way the publisher chooses to group its publications, and there's usually no link between the contents of one of those publications and the contents of the others; another publisher publishing an edition of the title would not use the same series. Here, these "Gients of Sci-Fi Collection" and "Worlds of If Collection" series seem to be unique to the publisher, so we would treat them as Publication Series (which is how "World of If Collection" was already recorded for that Philip K. Dick book).

All of that led to these further changes:

  • I removed the "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection" Publication Series designation.
  • I converted "Worlds of If Collection" as a subtitle to Publication Series on the publication itself (replacing "Giants of Sci-Fi Collection").

You can see the final result here. Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense, or if you disagree with any of it. Also, please do re-review the record and make sure everything looks correct. You can reply here by editing this section. Indent your response by adding a colon (':') at the beginning of each block of text.

Thanks. Again, welcome, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 11:33, 20 June 2020 (EDT)

The Essential Keith Laumer

I accepted your addition of The Essential Keith Laumer, but had to make some changes to match ISFDB standards:

  • Publication Type: I changed this to a collection. Per ISFDB definitions, a collection is a single author (or multiple authors working together) work. An anthology is a where you have an editor assembling stories from multiple authors.
  • Pages: We do not record page numbers for ebooks. If desired, the page equivalent can be added to the publication notes.
  • Series: The ISFDB differentiates publisher series (publisher level series like Ballantine Adult Fantasy) from title series (universe or groupings of books independent of publisher like Dune Universe). I removed the title series you entered and moved it to the publication as a pub series.
  • Currency: Currencies should have the currency symbol as we deal in multiple currencies.
  • Image: The Amazon link should be the link to the Amazon image, not to the page containing the image.
  • Contents: The publication contents should be entered in the publication and not the title notes. Please double check the contents.
  • ISBN: The ISBN should be included where available. I have added it from the copyright page via the Amazon Look Inside

I have also rejected the duplicate submission. We can be a little slower than normal processing submission during summer. We appreciate your submission & hope you will continue to contribute. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning so please check out the help links in the welcome message above. And let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking). -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:51, 5 July 2020 (EDT)

The Essential Rog Phillips

I accepted The Essential Rog Phillips, but again had to make changes:

  • Author: Only the author(s) should be credited for collections. The editor would go in the publication notes.
  • Series: Giants of Sci-Fi Collection is a publication series and not a title series. It needs to be added in the "Pub Series" field (and associated "Pub Series #" field).
  • Web Page: The Amazon links should not be entered in the web page field. Rather, the B089QQLZGG portion should be entered as an ASIN in the External IDs field.
  • I added the ISBN from the Amazon Look Inside and the contents from what you put in the synopsis field.

Please double check the contents listing. These are some of the same changes as the last publications. While we appreciate your contributions, please check out the final version of these pubs as they will help you in submitting future ones. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:04, 6 July 2020 (EDT)
