From the Earth to the Moon — and A Trip Around It

Hi Don. In your verified From the Earth to the Moon — and A Trip Around It, you have Willy Ley credited as Willey Ley. Is that how it is on the title pages? Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 21:09, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

My bad. It is Willy not Willey.Don Erikson 22:33, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Quinn's Jules de Grandin

I'm going to expand the notes to our mutually verified copies of the Popular Library editions of Seabury Quinn's Jules de Grandin storied including The Adventures of Jules de Grandin, The Casebook of Jules de Grandin, The Devil's Bride, The Hellfire Files of Jules de Grandin, The Skeleton Closet of Jules de Grandin and The Horror Chambers of Jules de Grandin. Mark or Marc Yankus

Can you confirm the cover art credit for this publication? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins|talk 02:20, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

It is "Marc". Don Erikson 00:24, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
I will make the correction. Because it can be difficult for me to keep up with the messages that I post, due to the sheer number of them, and because I shouldn't be expected to be the editor who makes the corrections based on those responses, if something similar to this should be posted to your talk page in the future, please proceed to make the necessary changes to the record. My purpose was only to bring a questionable situation to your attention, not to make changes to your verified record. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 03:26, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Pebble in the Sky cover artist

Stars: Original Stories Based on the Songs of Janis Ian

Hi, Don. In your verified of the above there are two content entries on p.302, both for Gilliland cartoons. Only one is in the 2004 edition. The ones in the 2003 edition are showing up as duplicates for Gilliland. ?? Doug / Vornoff 06:30, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

Yes , it is a duplicate. I'll remove it.Don Erikson 00:18, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

The Buchanan Campaign

Hello, just in case, can you confirm the artist for this pub? These are more IMHO in Moore's style. Thanks. Hauck 21:35, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Born with the Dead

I updated Born with the Dead to:

  • Add the subtitle to the title field per Template:PublicationFields:Title.
  • Add note about 'Assumed first printing that states "First Vintage Books edition, June 1975". There is no number line.'
  • Add a note about the Catalog # and that the ISBN is on the copyright page.
  • Add a note about 'The "About the Author" statement on page [259] has "4-75" in the lower-right corner.'
  • The existing notes included "Available as UK import at £1.00." I added to that "(2016-01-11 the source for this statement is unknown. It's not stated in the publication.)" It seems like an odd note as it's not clear from it if this was an official thing from the publisher.

Image of the Beast

You have verified Image of the Beast by Philip José Farmer, the 4th printing from Playboy Paperbacks. See: [[1]]. You're sure this is the correct 4th printing?
The 4th printing was done by Berkley Books in September 1982. That one has te same cover as the previous Playboy Books printings, and would have been the 4th Playboy Books printing, but Berkley Books took over the Playboy Books. So there is a 3rd Playboy printing, and a 4th printing by Berkley Books. Zlan52 16:44, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

The copyright page says it's the 4th printing. The Berkley must be wrong.Don Erikson 19:51, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

Extinction Game

I approved your edit adding Gary Gibson's Extinction Game. However, the ISBN check digit didn't calculate correctly. I changed the last digit of the ISBB to a 7 (you had a 1). If you still have the book in hand and it really is a 1, you could add the ISBN as it appears in the book to the notes. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 02:32, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Yes it's a "7". Luckily I I'm reading now or it would back at the library.Don Erikson 00:46, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Sardonicus and Other Stories

Del Rey's The Runaway Robot

I created a new record for the fourth printing of this title, but only afterward saw that you'd created a record as well. Your record didn't show up under the list of publications when I checked because it was entered under the wrong title record, the one crediting both del Rey and Fairman. Please delete the record which you have primary verified and then move your verification to this record. I have moved my verification to the second spot so that you can reclaim the first one for this printing. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 21:49, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

The Men Who Smiled

Hi, Don. If you get the chance could you check out my note here about the above. You have 3rd verification on it. Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 00:34, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Cover artist

of this pub seems to be Dean Ellis, see here. --Zapp 20:47, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

When I verified this I had no doubt it was Ellis's work. But I learned early on that you need evidence like a signature or another source and not just an opinion to cite an artist. Dean Ellis, Paul Lehr & John Berkey are 3 whose artists whose work I find most uncredited here because of the lack of verifiable info. But I guess no credit is better than a wrong one though. So with this additional info I'll add the credit.Don Erikson 22:14, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Eye of the Monster

Don, can you put the source for Ellis as artist in the notes for [this]. You're seldom wrong but you're too quiet to be 'quotable' .... ;-))). Plus the other two records with the same cover could be credited as well. Thanks! --~ Bill, Bluesman 00:11, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Never mind, I see where the credit came from [above]. I'm not sure how reliable the site is [too many bloggers] but your knowledge of styles is pretty impeccable. Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 00:16, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Arthur H. Landis / Camelot

Your input would be appreciated here. Thanks. PeteYoung 05:05, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

The Galactic Whirlpool

Could you please check your copy of your verified this whether the cover is actually credited to Dean Ellis? Based on style, I'm sure the cover is painted by Paul Lehr, see for example Lagrange Five and look at the way all those small rectangles are painted. And all those standing ellipsoids, see What Mad Universe, are pointing to Paul Lehr only. Thanks! Horzel 14:26, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how I would verify this as Ellis, it's obviously Lehr. I'll remove the Ellis but because with collaboration the monitors won't take a opinion as good enough. I'll leave a note that is likely Lehr.Don Erikson 18:39, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
So maybe I won't. I can't figure out how to edit verified info. I'll look into it.Don Erikson 18:44, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Shadow novels

Hi, Don. Regarding your two primary verified Shadow novels Mobsmen on the Spot and The Crime Cult, I have publications with all the same data as yours, except mine have ISBN numbers. Could you check yours to see if they're there because if they aren't I'll add new pubs with the ISBN's. Also I'd like to add some notes if that's okay with you (if we find mine and yours are the same pub). If you're interested, there's a help topic on this here. Thanks a lot, Doug / Vornoff 05:21, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

They do both have ISBNs. I missed them maybe because Pyramid was still using the old alphanumerics on the covers.Don Erikson 05:48, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I think that explains the question I had as to why some apparently had them and some didn't. Doug / Vornoff 17:57, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Cover Artist found

Hello, the cover artist for your verified pub was found. Hauck 14:19, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

I thought it was Gaughan but without proof.... That reuse of the art is a surprise, I never made the connection.Don Erikson 23:20, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Wandor's Journey

The cover artist of this is Jose Antonio Domingo. His signature, which looks like three or four vertical slashes, or closer up like 'jad', is visible near the left margin beside a monster's elbow. Compare for example with the signature on Heroic Fantasy. Three other Wandor titles from Avon 1979-81 appear to have the same cover artist, but I can't find any hi-res scan on the internet. Thanks. Horzel 12:21, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

I never would have noticed that signature. I agree it is Jose Antonio Domingo and I'll add the info. I checked the other Wandor books and the all have the signature, though WANDOR'S FLIGHT you can only see the top third. I'll add these to. Thanx.Don Erikson 23:34, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Sign of the Unicorn

The cover art for this is by Ron Walotsky, see this Amber Portfolio on Ebay. Horzel 15:27, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

And better, this edition already has Walotsky as cover artist. Horzel 15:30, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I added the credit to this another printing. If in the future you feel you have incontrovertible (hey I spelled it right) evidence concerning artist credit on something I verified, go ahead and add it.Don Erikson 23:53, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
OK, thanks! Horzel 15:22, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Assignment in Space with Rip Foster

Hi. Regarding http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?545366, I've second verified and added a cover image plus additional publication notes. Just FYI, note that I'm also asking Bluesman to do reference verification on this listing, and to approve deletion of this other listing of the title, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?265795, which I believe is redundant. Additions to Notes on A Companion to Wolves

Hi, I have added to the Notes for A Companion to Wolves. No corrections, just more information about what's on copyright page & front & back cover. All in Good Time

Hi. I have a library copy of All in Good Time, Bantam pb 1st printing P233041, which you verified two years ago. FIRST I would like to import three contents, INTERIORART T1938373; page 1, NOVEL T745097; and page [213], ESSAY About the Author edward ormondroyd T1154295. That will match or "parallel" our record (MarcKupper, 2008) for the companion publ of Time at the Top P233049 to this novel is sequel.

SECOND Subsequently: [a] revise Page-count to 212+[1] (not quite matching the companion record match/parallel to the other, which now counts every printed sheet); [b] match/parallel the Notes as follows.

  • First printing that states "Bantam edition / February 1983" and, preceded by the uppercase letter 'O', "0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"
  • A catalog # "20918-3" is on the front cover. The ISBN is on the spine, copyright page, and back cover barcode.
  • The publisher is stated on the title page as “(Bantam rooster logo)” over “Bantam Books” over “Toronto • New York • London • Sydney”.
  • A Canadian price is not given.
  • The cover art is credited as the copyright page.
  • The interior artist is credited on the title page, "Drawings by Ruth Robbins".
  • Please see the Bibliographic Comments for more detail from the copyright page.

That list is copy-paste with modification from the companion record P233049, thus entirely in the style of MarcKupper. (I have already created linked Bibliographic Comments in the same fashion.) I have already created Publication:LLNGDTMFVR1983 for All in Good Time parallel Publication:TMTTHTPPSM1982 for Time at the Top created by MarcKupper six years ago.

2013-03-27. This month I learned from Mhhutchins that the use of wiki-pages for purposes other than communication among editors will be greatly reduced. There is a method for hiding part of the Notes field of a database record, analogous to a subpage in some respects. ...

By the way, All in Good Time "About the Author" isn't substantial. It is identical to that in the companion book (I have library copies of both in hand) but it stands alone on p [213] where the other gives a parallel note the same note in Time at the Top is accompanied by one about its illustrator--all we know about her. --Pwendt|talk 19:30, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Hadon of Ancient Opar 1st

I would like to add some content to this publication [[3]]. On page 203 begins the essay "Chronology of Khokarsa". It is not credited, but in the introduction to this essay it becomes clear who wrote it: Philip José Farmer (on page 205: "See my Time's Last Gift"). I would like to link the other publications and translations to this first publication.Zlan52 15:16, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

I added "Chronology of Khokarsa" (page 203) to our verified pub. Also added a note explaining the authorship and merged the already existing versions of this essay. Hope you can agree. ps, you verified this edition twice (P1 and P5). Perhaps you can clear the P5 spot? Thanks, --Willem 20:26, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

The Silver Crown

Hi. For 1988 Collier / Macmillan edition I dated the COVERART by Michael Hays T951286 per copyright statement on the back cover of the 5th printing. --Pwendt|talk 20:45, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

I have a library copy of the 5th printing, which I entered/verified as clone-and-modify the 3rd printing that you verified, with Notes including two that cover the alternative versions of the novel.
  • (quoting the title page): "The alternative ending of The Silver Crown first appeared in the British edition, first published in hardcover in 1973 by Victor Gollancz, Ltd."
  • (describing the final chapter, quoting myself): First paragraph of final chapter "A Different Conclusion" pp 260-63 explains that is an alternative to the penultimate chapter "Safe at Oakstable" pp 248-59
Some notice of two versions belongs in the NOVEL title record T15911 and I haven't yet decided what I will say.
The final chapter intro par is short enough to transcribe in full before I return the book:
  • "The following ending was written by Robert C. O'Brien for the British edition of The Silver Crown. Though this final chapter is considerably shorter than that of the American edition, it concludes the book in an equally satisfying--and fascinating--way. Best of all, perhaps, is the choice it gives the reader as to which works best, and why."
Three blank lines divide that from the second paragraph. The heading above is slightly smaller than those for all of the preceding chapters (or all the chapters if this is considered an appendix) but there is no other indication here (such as italic face or "--Ed.") that the writer is not O'Brien, nor in the table of contents that this is an appendix.
--Pwendt|talk 23:53, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
By the way, for the 5th printing that I entered/verified a couple hours ago I added the cover image we provide for the 1st printing P47280. It matches in all respects including the upper-right-corner prices $3.95 $4.95. You report a different Canadian price for the intervening 3rd printing which indicates exchange rate fluctuation all correct. (If you created the linked 1st printing record by reference to your own copy, however, then you mis-reported the Canada price at P277572.) Good night. --Pwendt|talk 01:20, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Six weeks later. Momentarily I will submit this Note on the NOVEL title record T15911

(quote) This was O'Brien's debut novel, published by Atheneum in 1968. He wrote a new version of the final chapter for the first British edition (Gollancz, 1973).

(quote) The 1988 Collier Books edition (numerous printings) includes both of the alternative final chapters: first the original as "Safe at Oakstable", then the British as "A Different Conclusion". (end quote)

FYI, the contemporary of the first edition by Kirkus (posted 2011, no date) leads thus: "A successful fantasy is inherently self-explanatory; further, it suspends disbelief without straining credulity. That Mr. Arthur's nightmare of thought control requires eight pages of explanation at the end is symptomatic of a fundamental failure--but no structure, however well conceived, can support ...". The alternative conclusion eliminates the symptom entirely but does not touch the failure. --Pwendt|talk 00:44, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Z for Zachariah

I submitted more data for the publication you verified P254379 --at least the month Year=1975-02-00 and at least the last two of four Notes, one of which reports publication date 1975-02-18 per contemporary review by Kirkus as posted 2012. A moderator approved it by mistake. I'm not sure whether I augmented or merely re-formatted the first two Notes.

Regarding the last two Notes:

  • Is there any publication date stated in the book? If not you have the option what version of the date to provide in the Year field.
  • Does the book identify the cover artists?

--Pwendt|talk 16:17, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

The title page give a a date of 1975. The cover has the top half of a signature, you can make out McCea. I will add a note concerning this.Don Erikson 23:50, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Plague by Jonathan Black

Does the book P359200 give any more information about "Old Gally Mander" T1377638 by Rachel Field, p15-18? I am not sure that is the Rachel Field (d. 1942); also doubt that many of the undated Contents were original to the 1958 collection. --Pwendt|talk 21:43, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

OCLC 5244026 suggests that may have been selected, collected, edited, by Field in 1929, American folk and fairy tales. --Pwendt|talk 21:50, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Unibook date 'codes'

First one is for [The Great Brain Robbery]. I have a copy with the code 3-74 at bottom of the last page of text. Second one is [Siege of Earth]. Little trickier here as obviously there could be two printings, I have one with date code 3-74 on last page of text and the ad in question has the fishing reel and the later '73 date code on it. I won't do anything to either record until we can compare. Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:54, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

And, it turns out you have a few other Unibook editions, maybe they have codes as well? --~ Bill, Bluesman 00:01, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Tales from Silver Lands

T1843946 of which you verified one. If none were verified I would downcase the second word of the title and add synopsis, at least "19 South American tales" per the newspaper list below.

I added the first edition (in the queue as I depart) per American newspaper list of books for the 1924 Christmas season. I also added the Award, 1925 Newbery Medal (which does not generate a notice identifying verifiers, as adding synopsis to the title record evidently does). --Pwendt|talk 03:51, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

I submitted the title change alone --downcase From=>from in Title, Publication, and Coverart records-- on advice of Mhhutchins. --Pwendt|talk 00:54, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

A Modern Utopia

Does your 1971 book P513801 credit its cover artist as "Sir David Low" A215388?

This must be the cartoonist 'Low' (David Low) A130046, whom SFE credits with cover illustration of three works by H.G. Wells (SFE:Wells; search 'David Low'). We now have another P493866; see cover image, vol 2. I guess the drawings for both covers we show are Low caricatures of Wells himself.

By the way, I don't know how we handle "Sir" and other titles anyway. --Pwendt|talk 18:41, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Per the manual we do give titles and ranks as credited "Sir", "Capt.", etc.

Hayakawa Bunko SF primary verification changes

Hello, I have been working on our records with regard to publisher 早川書房 (Hayakawa Shobō). Towards that end I would like to make a number of changes to pub records where you have primary verifications. First I would like to add the following pubs to pub series ハヤカワ文庫・SF (Hayakawa Bunko SF):

  • 229 1977-03
    • P521672 Month from NDL JPNO: 77033447; OCLC: 32834507; Correct title adding missing characters near end

I have provided JPNO links into the Japanese Nation Diet Library (NDL; something akin to the US Library of Congress) and OCLC link for reference. I annotated the entries above with other changes I would like to make. In addition, I would also like to add the JPNO and OCLC links to the record notes. I plan to add Latin transliteration and translator credits to the title records (but I can add them to the pub records too if you like). Let me know what you think. The entries above that do not link to a pub record is where I have data and am considering adding a record if we determine it is not the same as what you already have. Thank you. Man of Earth

I am shifting Man of Earth from being by Algis Budrys to be by A. J. Budrys as we should be using the author name that's credited on the title page. Template:PublicationFields:Author has "The name should be entered exactly as it actually appeared in the publication." and "As with the title, take the name from the title page in preference to the cover or spine of the book." I'm also adding a note The back cover has "This is an original publication–not a reprint." --Marc Kupper|talk 07:48, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Double Phoenix

Another editor, Ravonlocke, submitted an edit to change the editor of our mutually verified publication Double Phoenix. He attempted to change the editor from Lin Carter to Edmund Cooper and Roger Lancelyn Green, stating that Carter is not credited as editor. He is correct about the credit. However, Carter is certainly the editor of the anthology, and Reginald1 lists him as such indicating that the anthology was edited anonymously. If you agree, I'll change the editor to "uncredited" and make a variant relationship showing Carter as the actual editor. Let me know if that is agreeable. I'll also add the appropriate notes and coordinate with Bill who has verified the Canadian printing. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 12:39, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

All About Satellites and Space Ships

Several days ago --beginning with clone of the 1st ed. 3rd printing that you verified P554090-- I added, augmented, annotated the First edition and Revised edition first printings; also annotated the NONFICTION title T1950643. Beside the Notes that obviously pertain partly to your book, this puts the first ed. in publication series Allabout Books. Probably the 3rd printing shows that too.

Regarding George Wilde A134948, illustrator of the first ed. at least:
I created Bio:George Wilde comprising notes on George A. and Irma Wilde. Neither LC catalog nor WorldCat credits George A. Wilde for any George Wilde works in the database. Can you judge by examination whether the illustrator of All About Satellites is the contemporary illustrator of Fix It Man, Big Helpers/Grosse Helfer, and Mr. Wishing Went Fishing (at Google: Images)?

The Butterfly Revolution

Hi, is the cover art of this edition really credited (in or on the book) to Bruce Pennington, or is the credit cloned from an earlier edition? Thanks. Horzel 20:51, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

The copyright page says Bruce Pennington. But it gets complicated. The 1st Ballantine printing cover credit is from The Whole Science Fiction Data Base No.4. The 2nd printing from the first. These are NOT credited in the book. This printing doesn't have a left over credit. So I believe it's correct. I also believe the Pennington credit for the 1st & 2nd printings are incorrect from a mistake by The Whole Science Fiction Data Base No.4. I will remove the 2 earlier credits.Don Erikson 00:36, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
That was not my intention. The Panther 1967 edition has cover art by Bruce Pennington, the same was used on one of the early Ballantine editions. The 20th Ballantine edition does not look like Pennington art, and is not on the Pennington checklist (see also this discussion). Horzel 07:23, 27 September 2017 (EDT)

Hi Don - please see the earlier referenced thread for the gory details but I believe you, Mhhutchins, and I all have copies of the same book but unfortunately, we have two publication records.
  • Aliens in Space dated 0000-00-00 and verified 2015-11-05 by Don Erikson.
  • Aliens in Space dated 1979-00-00 and verified 2015-11-06 by Mhhutchins. Yes, the verifications are one day apart and per the pub record numbers they were created about a day apart too.

I uploaded a scan of the copyright page from my copy here. My title page has "Crescent" over "New York". At first glance it's a 0000-00-00 date publication which is how you dated it.

Mhhutchins had dug a little deeper and decided to call it 1979 based on the CIP data block and that the 79-52716 record was for the Crescent edition. He should have added a note explaining how he used the CIP data as source for the 1979-00-00 date that he used. Specifically, the Library of Congress classification number is "PR6053.A378 A78 1979" The last part is the year of publication. There's another clue that it's 1979 in that the LCCN 79-52716 starts with 79 but for all LCCN's that start with 7 you need to look at the year in the LC classification number field. (It's a long story and it's a special case for all 7x-### numbers).
If you agree that we all have the same book then I'll work out how to best merge the two publication records that we have for the book. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:29, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:03, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Holmes-Dracula File

Hi Don, I added a cover image to The Holmes-Dracula File. MLB 02:13, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

American Gothic Tales

Added artist to cover credit. Jacoby is the designer, not the sole artist.[11]--Auric 02:37, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Sorry to intervene, but we do not credit the designer. As the cover art is clearly this one, I changed the credit to Ryder alone. Hauck 06:29, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

The Savage Humanists

Added cover scan and cover art credit to your PV'd The Savage Humanists. Albinoflea 00:13, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

Blood Reign of the Dictator

Robert Bonfils cover credit added to Blood Reign of the Dictator with link to source. MOHearn 15:40, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

To Your Scattered Bodies Go - cover art

I added the cover artist of this [printing], Don Ivan Punchatz. He did the covers of all of the new Riverworld editions.

Alternative Histories

Added a Publisher Series and expanded the note for your PV'd Alternative Histories. I'll add a cover scan later tonight.

Since you pulled some of the information from Locus, do you want to also do the Locus verification? Thanks, Albinoflea 21:55, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

New Stories from the TZ

I credited the cover of New Stories from the Twilight Zone to Robert Foster--I noted a link to the original painting on the earliest Pathfinder edition with this cover. MOHearn 14:13, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
