Welcome!
Hello, Hfred123, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- Help pages
- Field-by-field guide to entering new publications into the database
- Help:Getting Started
- What the ISFDB Wiki is for
- FAQ
- Wiki editing help - Tips on how to use the wiki-specific features when editing wiki pages.
- Wiki Conventions - How things are usually done on this wiki.
- Help:How to upload images to the ISFDB wiki
Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.
Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.
I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:29, 23 January 2021 (EST)
Questions
Great thanks, read quite a bit and submitted a few more; learning curve! I see you are adding the paperback and hardcover editions, appreciated, (I think there is a fast way to do that once the first is in.) 'Add a variant to this title?' I notice a lot of the books don't have a synopsis, so will work on adding those. also, not sure about 'tags' will learn more about that. (Presumably these are all Science Fiction.) SF. - Once a publication is in the database, it can be cloned (see Help:How to clone a publication). This is the preferred way to enter other formats as otherwise using the "Add New ..." options will create duplicate records that need to be merged together. Variants are for the same work under a different title or author credit. Tags are user driven and are a way for people to categorize works. We appreciate your submissions & hope you will continue to contribute. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning so please check out the help links in the welcome message above. And let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking). -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:13, 24 January 2021 (EST)
Synopses
Thanks for adding the synopses to titles. One remark though, do check out the help text on Synopses. I quote:
- " A synopsis from another source like a blurb or a bibliographic note may be used, in whole or in part. If you do, enclose the text in quotes, state the source and include the date. An English synopsis should be quoted verbatim, while a non-English synopsis should be translated, following the original as closely as possible and identifying the exact source of the text and its language. Use an ellipsis ("...") for omitted text. Individual words may be replaced for clarity, with the replacement enclosed in square brackets ("[]"). ".
So you'll need to add the source of the synopses you have entered, and enclose the text in quotes. Something like " From the back cover of the 2016 paperback edition: "blah blah" ". I've done an example for you - see this one (if it wouldn't be accurate, do not hesitate to submit a correction :).
I've accepted all of your submissions, but do go in again, and adjust per the rules cited above, that would be appreciated! Regards, MagicUnk 15:15, 26 January 2021 (EST)
OK thanks for accepting synopses despite incorrect format, I've started adding the source and quotes, will chip away in spare time. Hfred123 16:05, 27 January 2021 (EST) Synopses now all done! Hfred123 09:16, 30 January 2021 (EST)
