Science Fiction Yearbook #1

I found this on the way to looking up something else on the internet. I’d like to replace your image with it. What do you think? And forgive the typo. MLB 21:50, 11 February 2021 (EST)

I moved it over to replace my image & deleted the original. Please always use the upload option from the publication page as that will store it at the right location. Thanks for finding the better image. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:41, 12 February 2021 (EST)

Image templates help

Hello,

Can you come over here and help with the image templates? I rarely work with images not coming from the non-automatic uploads so it always takes me awhile to figure out these. My guess is "Author Image Data" but would prefer a second set of eyes. Thanks in advance! Annie 15:09, 7 March 2021 (EST)

Done. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:21, 7 March 2021 (EST)
Thanks! (and now I know what to do next time) :) Annie 15:25, 7 March 2021 (EST)

What Abigail Did That Summer

Thanks for doing the CHAPBOOK->NOVEL conversion on the rest of these! I knew they were outstanding, but I didn't want to do the remaining 3 until I knew that the first one I attacked was all OK. ErsatzCulture 14:38, 26 March 2021 (EDT)

No problem. I found them via the chapbooks without shortfiction cleanup report. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:47, 26 March 2021 (EDT)

Starlog

This magazine had work done recently after I submitted covers for most issues on here; you're still holding them, so I wonder if you're going to add them, reject them, or should I cancel them? --Username 09:56, 30 March 2021 (EDT)

Doh! Sorry, I forgot those submissions are what started the Community Portal discussion. As it is a not a speculative fiction magazine, we don't allow cover images per ISFDB rules. I have rejected those edits. Thanks for reminding me. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:52, 30 March 2021 (EDT)

Mîncătorii de ziduri serializations

Hello. I wrote some kind of answer to your message here: [1]. I'm not very familiar with these type of communication. Sorry if I did something wrong. Eraser25 15:22, 2 April 2021 (EDT)

No problem. I responded there. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:21, 2 April 2021 (EDT)

Tim Kask

So why did you add Tim Kask back? He has no other credits and I had just gone through the trouble of removing him. TAWeiss 21:34, 18 April 2021 (EDT)

Because the rules changed as I said on your talk page. You removal was prior to the rule change. It doesn't make sense to have all the other issues have an editor and his be the only "Editors of...". He is also not the only Dragon Magazine editor whose credits in the database are solely for the magazine. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:13, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

John Maclay

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?24069; the change was the publisher name which capitalized the L (MacLay) instead of Maclay, the author's name. --Username 18:13, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Ah, sorry I missed that. Thanks for letting me know. I unrejected and approved. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:47, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Duplicatation in Author / Editor Names

There is an anthology listed under my author / editpr credits, yet I did not edit it, nor did I have anything to do with it at all. The anthology is a collection of public domain stories, and I suspect the material was simply scraped from a public domain source like the Gutenberg Projet and a random name assigned to it as editor. According to the Amazon preview, it was published in India so I am dubious about the name of the editor. I am not interested in paying the $9.99 to read it just to find out anything else about it.

How do I go about correcting this? HoosierDragon 20:53, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

I believe you mean this publication? Seems like there are just two Terry O'Brien's. It happens. I have disambiguated the two records. Thanks for letting us know. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:07, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

The Voice

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1846358; https://picclick.com/THE-VOICE-by-Colm-Connolly-Hard-Cover-284041373858.html; it was first published in England in 1983 which is where the copyright came from. --Username 23:06, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Your submission provided this as a source instead. That does not mention the 1983 publication. I have updated the entry based on the new source. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:35, 4 May 2021 (EDT)
I see your note about 1983 but the date still says 1986 so I'll fix that with an edit. --Username 05:33, 5 May 2021 (EDT)
D'oh! Thanks for catching that. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:03, 5 May 2021 (EDT)

™ symbol

Are we saying that all the titles with this symbol have been trademarked? I thought individual written works were not eligible for trademark protection. I'm not questioning your decisions, just asking a question. John Scifibones 13:44, 8 May 2021 (EDT)

No, those stories are not trademarked. They are ones where the author chose to use the trademark symbol as part of the title (usually with a fake product name). They are not an attempt to trademark something. The true trademarks (like the Aliens™ case) are the ones that can be removed. Basically, if it was the author's artistic decision, it should be kept and if it was a legal decision, it can be removed. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:33, 8 May 2021 (EDT)
Thanks, now I understand. I hope that posting that batch didn't cause too much aggravation. John Scifibones 16:03, 8 May 2021 (EDT)
Nope, no aggravation. The intent to clean up the database is appreciated. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:05, 8 May 2021 (EDT)

Thanks!

Thanks for working on the queue and answering editors' questions the last few days! Annie has been mostly unavailable the last week (but hopes to be back soon) and I was busy doing an emergency rewrite of a big chunk of Fixer after a third party tool had become effectively defunct. Always something ;-) Ahasuerus 18:14, 9 May 2021 (EDT)

No problem. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:00, 10 May 2021 (EDT)

Middlemore

So there's a problem with this now, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?277099, because Moderator Bob rejected my deletion of Maria Middlemore's story with a simple "Why?"; search of Google Books copy of this book showed that it was an ancient tale already on ISFDB, even though the intro by Hugh Lamb seemed to think it had never been reprinted. I wrote Bob a note about why it should have been deleted, so y'all will have to decide whether to unreject and get rid of the now unnecessary Maria record; also, the Lamb intro is only for her story, not for the book as a whole; also also, a couple of my later edits were for another volume in the Darkness Rising series with another old story (G. R. Sims' Ha Ha) and another Lamb intro for the story only and not for the book, where I changed the title to the way it is at the head of the story, and later made an edit because ISFDB thinks there's 2 G. R. Sims when actually they're both the same guy; I'm not sure if I remembered to change the date because it's from his collection The Ring O'Bells (1894). So it's really confusing but no one ever seemed to notice any of this since those books were entered here in 2008 so I'm happy to be the first. You seem to be 1 of the moderators here who knows more about these kinds of complications than some others so I trust you'll know what to do. --Username 19:39, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

I fixed Secrets of Shadows - removed the extraneous record and updated the Lamb essay. As the Google Book images stopped before the essay, I modeled the title on the one in Evil Smiles (which does show the essay page). I also changed the numbers to words in both volumes' titles since the Google Book images show the title pages have the words. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:03, 14 May 2021 (EDT)

Dowsing

Just letting you know that I wrote a note on the Community Portal that the Kenneth Roberts name was wrongly attached to Kenneth Lewis Roberts' record when in fact it was used once as a house name for an old Doc Savage work by Lester Dent. Moderator removed it, but when my added cover for Kenneth Lewis Roberts' earlier dowsing rod book was approved under the name Kenneth Roberts, as it is written on title page, the name went right back to being linked to the Doc Savage. Water Unlimited was also published as by Kenneth Roberts, and I see your name is attached to my edit, so if you do accept my edit the Kenneth Roberts name needs to be separated from the Doc Savage house name again, or maybe as I mentioned in my earlier note these fake science non-fiction books don't really belong on ISFDB and should just be deleted. --Username 09:28, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

I deleted both of Kenneth Lewis Roberts' nonfiction pubs as nongenre. This caused your edit to have to be rejected (since it no longer exists). Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:21, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

Cohen Book

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?703177; After I fixed the odd situation here where editor wrote a note saying 1996 but made the date 1967, I see now that date is 1996 but all contents still say 1967. What's the process for changing those dates? There must be a way to change them en masse rather than one by one; is it possible for editors or something only mods can do? --Username 09:45, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

When the contents are only in a single pub, they can be changed by editing the pub (like here). It still requires changing every date, but can be done in a single edit. If the contents are in multiple pubs, the only way is to edit each title record separately. There are no shortcuts. It would be a nice feature to have bulk edits, but there would be complications and we have a small development team with a large list of requested features. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:27, 12 June 2021 (EDT)
