Welcome!

Hello, PeterKlancic, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

SF Impulse, August 1966

A record for this issue already exists in the database. The difference between your submission and the current record was the title of the magazine: Impulse v. SF Impulse. A scan of the cover shows it to be the latter. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:28, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You

I think we already have that edition here? BLongley 19:14, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Analog, May 1962 [UK]

I'm holding a submission to add a new essay content to this issue. Is this a new essay or just the continuation of the essay that starts on page 2? Does it have a new title page and should be considered a different essay? Ordinarily we don't create a new record for the continuation of a piece later on the same issue. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:53, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

It is a continuation - I won't add these in future. PeterKlancic 09:56, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Submission rejected by the moderator. You also have the option of cancelling submissions. Thanks again. Mhhutchins 14:50, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Analog, June 1962 [UK]

I'm holding a submission to update this issue pending the answering of a few questions.

  1. You added the cover artist credit as "Thomas". Is this credited in the pub itself?
Yes - "Cover by Thomas" I cant scan anything at the moment 'til I put my system back in the right place.
No need to scan to provide evidence of credit. Doing a primary verification of the record would help though. Thanks. Mhhutchins 14:59, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
  2. Is the new content essay titled "Utopian Voters (continued)" (page 118) actually a new essay, credited as such on its title page and on the issue's content page?
No - I won't do this in future.
I've removed the record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 14:59, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
  3. The interiorart credit matches those from the original US edition from which the story was reprinted (Analog, Feb 1962. They are credited to Schoenherr in that record. Are they credited here? (You can credit a piece with an artist signature as well as a stated credit.) We don't use "unknown" unless the piece's authorship is actually unknown by the editor or publisher of the publication. In cases where the artist is not credited we use "uncredited".
I realised later I should have put "uncredited". I've just been thro' this issue again and can't see any attributions other than Schoenherr.
I believe at this time, artists were only credited on the contents page. If only Schoenherr is credited there, that means all interior art can be credited to him on the ISFDB record, even if there are no visible signatures on the artwork itself. Mhhutchins 14:59, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
  4. Leaving blank dates in a content record's date field will make the system automatically date it the same as the pub record, which is convenient in most cases. Here, because this is not there original publication, they will have to be fixed. I'm going to merge the records with the original records which will give them the date of those records.
I left them blank because I had read that they may come from various issues of Analog US. Since I don't have them I didn't feel able to put the dates in.
Merging the records with the records of the first publication dates them correctly, so this is no problem whatsoever. I just pointed this out so that you don't have to be concerned with dates of content records on any future submissions. Mhhutchins 14:59, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 19:08, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Replied: PeterKlancic 10:31, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Submission was accepted, and I'll go back and do some more fiddling around. Mhhutchins 14:59, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Analog, January 1962 [UK]

The submission adding this publication was accepted. I'm going to merge the contents with the records for their original publication which will adjust the dates of each. My question is concerning the essay on page 127. Ordinarily we don't create different records is a piece is continued later on in the same issue. Are you certain that this is a new essay and warrants a new record? Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:12, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Serials should be entered using this format: TITLE (Part x of y). So I'll adjust the Harrison serial's title to "Sense of Obligation (Part 1 of 3)". Mhhutchins 19:13, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
I have a tendancy to pedantry - I entered what it said! PeterKlancic 10:34, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Because each magazine has their own way of indicating different parts, we had to decide on a standard way of entering them into the db. You'll pick up the ISFDB standards in no time, if you continue to contribute (and we hope you do!) Mhhutchins 15:09, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Is "Science Fantasy" credited to "John W. Campbell" or "The Editor"? Mhhutchins 19:15, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
The Editor - Sorry. PeterKlancic 10:34, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Fixed. Mhhutchins 15:09, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Is "Fifty Per Cent Prophet" credited to Darrel T. Langart or Darrell T. Langart? Mhhutchins 19:29, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
The former. PeterKlancic 10:34, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Is this credit from the contents page or the title page of the story itself? (The latter is the ISFDB standard of titling contents.) I only ask because the story first appeared credited to "Darrell", which I noticed when I merged the records. (We can always reverse that if it's determined it should be "Darrel" Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 15:09, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Both say Darrel. PeterKlancic 19:21, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
I've added a cover image link and removed the cover art credit for Van Dongen, because it looks like a repainting of his original cover. Can you recheck to see if Van Dongen is actually credited in the pub? I hope all of this doesn't appear to be picky and trivial. I fear newcomers may find our procedures coming across that way, and I want to reassure you that this happens to everyone, even me, when they first become editors. In time, it should be a piece of cake. Again, thanks for contributing and I hope you continue to do so. Mhhutchins 15:09, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
At the bottom of the contents page it says "JOHN W. CAMPBELL Editor"
Underneath this it says "Cover by van Dongen"
Finally it says "Illustrations by Doulas, Ivia and van Dongen"

Galaxy UK additions

I've just noticed I missed off the (UK) on some of the Galaxy submissions. They all should have had them. PeterKlancic 19:25, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Please go to the records that were incorrectly entered and update three items: the pub record, the editor record and the cover artist record for each publication that was incorrectly entered. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:55, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I think I corrected most Pubs and Editors as I accepted them, but I didn't think to check COVERART records so some of those may have escaped. Please DO double-check if you can spare the time - which I hope you can, as we still need to deal with Contents and Covers and putting them into Series, etc. BLongley 03:11, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I checked a query below. However I'm not planning to do any more checking or inserting for a while as I'm, slowly, putting my Study back together after it being out of commission for some months. Most of the Magazines invloved are tucked away behind others & my scanner is not connected. I plan to scan missing covers for my catalogue and will try uploading againg & go back to these magazines. However, I'm not sure about copying contents as I can't see how it is done from the instructions given. PeterKlancic 16:53, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Literary Line-Up

For something like this, use "uncredited" instead of "The Editor" if it is not credited. We only use something like "The Editor" if it's credited that way. I changed it and also added the title of the magazine and a date in parentheses to disambiguate among multiple instances of the same column title. If you wanted to, you could put them all in a Literary Line-Up series. Other people have done that with recurring features of some other magazines. See, for example, Brass Tacks or The Reference Libary. Doing this is by no means a requirement -- I'm just mentioning it as a technique some people have used. --MartyD 11:08, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Galaxy Magazine, June 1960

I've placed on hold a submission creating a record for this issue. Because we already have a record for this issue, I'm assuming you're trying to create a record for the UK edition. You've place the following data in the "Note to Moderator" field: "The cover is the same - except - June 1960 50c is replaced by No 80 3/6 and a teepee symbol with TP in it. Exploring Science by Jonathan N. Leonard (p155) is replaced by "The Conquest of Space". p58 & 135 have illistrations behind the titles which are no shown in the contents. There is nothing on the contents or in the ads which show UK content." You should know that data in this field is not visible and does not become a part of the database record. The purpose of this field is to provide additional information to the moderator to help him determine whether the submission should be accepted. Any information that you want to be part of the record (and doesn't fit in any other data field) should be entered in the "Note Field". Some of the data that you've entered into this submission's "Note to Moderator" field might better be placed in the "Note Field". I'm going to accept the submission and ask that you determine whether the added data should be part of the record. You will also need to update the pub record, the editor record, and the cover artist record to "Galaxy Magazine, June 1960 (UK)". Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:54, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Here is a link to the accepted record: Galaxy, June 1960. Mhhutchins 01:57, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I've added the (UK) and Double checked the rest. I suspect that by the time I get the hang of this I'll have input the magazines that I've got which aren't on the DB. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PeterKlancic (talkcontribs) .
Appreciate your adding these new records. You'll still need to update the editor record and the coverart record. These two records are created automatically when you create a pub record and the system automatically gives them the same title that you've entered as the pub record's title.
When you start adding the contents, let me know. There is an easy method to adding contents to magazines which are exactly the same as an issue that's already in the database (like the 1970s issues of Galaxy and If). If an issue draws from several different issues of the US version, then you have to create new content records and then merge them with those records that already exist in the db. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:12, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
The Magazines have the same details as the American versions.PeterKlancic 16:56, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Adding Contents

I notice you've started adding contents for UK editions of earlier US magazines. When the contents are the same, or similar, it's far easier to "IMPORT" from the existing publication - e.g. as Astounding Science Fiction, June 1959 (UK) is so similar to Astounding Science Fiction, March 1959 it's better to go to the later title and use "Import Content", giving the pre-existing Publication ID or Tag - in this case 57580 or ASTMAR1959. This will save a lot of later merges. BLongley 17:37, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

I left the magazines where all the contents were the same (Galaxy)> Ive done the others, except for 2, I'll put the headers in, but I need a pointer to the instructions on how to do it. (If you email me a notice - otherwise it could be a few days - when I've got my study back together & would be scanning some covers.) PeterKlancic 18:43, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Analog, April 1963 (UK)

Can you confirm that the title of Christopher Anvil's story on page 38 in this issue begins with "The"? Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:08, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, no it does not. PeterKlancic 16:41, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
One more thing about this issue: are you certain that the art on page 50 is for Anvil's story. The US magazine only had one piece of art for this story. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 17:15, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Just coming back to this after a long time. Also too little space so hard to dig things out. This graphic is really just a filler as it just says "FIN". PeterKlancic

New Worlds #142

Hello, I've made some slight adjustements (corrected title of Ballard's essay, added Letters colmun) and uploaded covers to your verified issue of this magazine.Hauck 17:31, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

UK edition of Analog for December 1962

We were missing an illustration in the August 1962 US issue] of Analog, which I've added on page 24 of that issue. This also caused me no renumber the disambiguation of the subsequent illustrations for that story. That story is reprinted in the December 1962 UK issue which you have verified. If your copy is also missing the third illustration which depicts a number of lions and a giant snake being led out of a space ship, you should import the title record for the illustration (1924332). If it does not contain that drawing, then we many need to work on making some variants as my renumbering of the 4th and 5th illustrations has left a hole in the sequence in your issue. If that is the case, let me know and I can help with matching the records. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:41, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
