Webzine eligibility

I'm holding your submissions to add publication records for the webzine Inkscrawl to the ISFDB. The current ISFDB policy is that webzines are only eligible for inclusion under specific conditions. The Rules of Acquisition states:

Works published in a web-based publication (webzine) and available only as an HTML readable file are not eligible for inclusion with the following exceptions:
  • It is published by a market which makes the author eligible for SFWA membership (listed here).
  • It has been shortlisted for a major award. (This last may include works which are self-published by an author on their own website. Otherwise such works are not eligible.)

Based on this policy it doesn't appear that Inkscrawl is eligible. Do you have further information that would allow it to be indexed in the ISFDB? If so, please respond here. I regret that you made so much effort into creating these records, since the policy as outlined here is linked to the front page of the ISFDB wiki. Reviews of ineligible titles

The policy of inclusion states:

  • Reviews of media products (films, TV shows, games, music and dramatized recordings), stage productions, magazines and fanzines (regardless of their genre), and books that are not eligible for inclusion in the database (graphic novels, nongenre novels by authors that are below the threshold, nonassociational nonfiction works), should not be entered into the "Review" section of the data entry form. A record should be created in the "Regular Titles" section typed as ESSAY. If the review is not titled, this title format is suggested: Review of "Work" by Responsible Person(s). Descriptions of the type of work are also encouraged.

So I have deleted the REVIEW of The History of White People in this publication and added a content record as an ESSAY. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 00:31, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

About the ...

I accepted your edits to The SEA Is Ours, but deleted the "About the Authors" and "About the Editors" entries. We generally do not include these as content records unless they are of substantial length or quality. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 00:40, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Also, you should provide the source for the data in the record's Note field. If the data is from a primary source (the publication itself), then you should do a primary verification of the record. Interview of Chandler Davis

Is this interview of the author who is usually credited as Chan Davis? If it isn't that author, and the interviewee is an unknown author, we will have to disambiguate their name. If it is not an author or sf personality, the INTERVIEW record should be removed and deleted, and it should be replaced by a new record typed as ESSAY. Thanks. Thanks. I've updated the interviewee field of the record. When a non-canonical form of the name is given as the interviewee, it must be corrected to the canonical name. Primary (transient) verifications

Thanks for adding contents to the various publications you submitted for! As you noted that these were based upon transient verifications you'll likely want to document it (and we encourage that): this is possible via the left tool bar. Also it is recommended to change the note texts for the respective publications, as the former deducted data and contents are now ensured (or modified). Thank you very much for your contributions! By "documenting" do you mean verifying the pubs (which I have done) or adding notes to the listing? Also, how do I handle older pub notes if the primary pub has a vaguer publication date and doesn't include price anywhere? Thanks! S. Qiouyi Lu 16:22, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Some notes are most welcome. Personally, I like to document some things, as in this recent example, though most editors are content with less. In any case we'd like to document in the notes some additional material that wouldn't necessary qualify as full entries (for examples lists of nonfiction or an index), apparent mistakes and the sources for the publication date, the cover artist or the price, if it is not printed on the publication.
If a publication is primary verified, please contact the verifier(s) upon any change, unless the editor's talk page tells you otherwise. I hope this helps a bit. Stonecreek 20:04, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Glitter & Mayhem

I should not have accepted your submission adding a new publication record for this title, as there was already one in the database. The duplicate publication record will have to be deleted. I'll also have to delete the title records for all of the contents you added to the duplicate publication record. Please be certain that a publication isn't in the database before making a submission to create a new record. As you can see, it causes some unnecessary work...for both of us. Thanks. It's better to search by author/editor name. The search for title only finds exact matches, so "glitter mayhem" wouldn't find anything. I've deleted the first record and kept the one you verified. I also changed the publication date based on the Amazon listing, which I sourced in the Note field. Mhhutchins|talk 19:25, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Octavia's Brood

A few points about this record:

  • The characters you added to the title of the story on page 123 are not unicode, so they don't display correctly. I suggest removing them and then note their existence in the Note field (they didn't display there either.) Also, try to avoid personalizing notes, such as "I have done my best...". Perhaps something like "The verifying editor has done their best...".
  • Excerpts aren't complete, so they shouldn't be given a length designation (e.g. short story) regardless of their word count. Leave them as just SHORTFICTION.
  • If the map on page 56 illustrates the story, then the starting page of the story should be given as 56 as well.
  • The date of the essay by Tananarive Due should be the date it is first published, presumably here. We don't date works by the date they are written, or first presented to the public, but by the date they are first published. The note is sufficient to explain its original appearance.

Also, the last bulleted note is a little confusing. Perhaps just saying "dditional information about the Institute for Anarchist Studies and AK Press appears on two unnumbered pages at the back of the book." would be better. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 22:32, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Writing the Other

A book published in 2005 wouldn't have an ISBN-13, so that should be changed back to the ISBN-10. Then you can clone that record to create one for your later printing, and update the new on if it has a stated ISBN-13. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 02:42, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Also, it appears that the list price is $12.00. The source you link to (the publisher's website) gives the struck retail price with a sale price of $9.00. The ISFDB records the retail price, which is also given in the Amazon listing as $12.00. Does your 9th printing have a printed price? Mhhutchins|talk 02:46, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

The SEA Is Ours

I've replaced the Amazon image for our verified pub with one that has "SEA" capitalized – the Amazon image incorrectly has "Sea" in upper and lower case. I've also added a note about the stickered Canadian price on my copy. However, one question: does your trade paperback edition have "Tales from Steampunk Southeast Asia" on the title page or "Tales of Steampunk Southeast Asia"? I strongly suspect the latter: I've corrected the title record and the unverified pub, and mine also has "of". Thanks for checking. PeteYoung 15:31, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Long Hidden: Speculative Fiction from the Margins of History

According to Amazon Look Inside, "結草銜環 (Knotting Grass, Holding Ring)" is actually in English (not Japanese), though it does use this title. I have submitted a correction. The Girl in the Road cover credit

Could you take a look at the cover of your hc edition of The Girl in the Road and let us know if there is any photography on the front or back cover? A couple of editors are puzzling over the "Eduardo Jose Bernardino" photography credit given on the tp edition of the book when there is no photography. An alternative way of crediting the info might be as I have it on my verified tp edition. Thanks for checking. PeteYoung 05:24, 18 July 2017 (EDT)
