Welcome!

Hello, Scottandelli, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 13:47, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Planet Stories, Summer 1942

Hi, and welcome. Thank you for the updates to Planet Stories, Summer 1942. If you are working from an actual copy of the magazine (vs. the facsimile reproduction mentioned in the notes), I have two requests for you:

  1. Please modify the notes to remove the "Additional data..." reference, unless there's something in all of the publication information (other than the month) that you do not see in the magazine itself. The assumption for all records is that information is as seen in the primary source -- a copy of the actual publication -- unless otherwise noted as coming from somewhere else. So when there is a note about info from a secondary source, that implies either the information is NOT in the publication itself or no one has yet seen the publication itself to check.
  2. Please mark yourself as Primary verifier. This will let everyone know an actual person has looked at an actual copy of the publication and has compared it to the record. We have records that are auto-submitted by robots and that are constructed entirely using information from secondary sources, so it helps a great deal to know when a record has gone through the combination of human eyes/hands and the publication itself.

Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 13:55, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

The interior art record by Frank R. Paul was entered as "Frank R Paul" which creates a new artist. I've corrected it to use the standard spelling. Mhhutchins 18:43, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Same situation with "D Lynch" corrected to "D. Lynch". Mhhutchins 18:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Marty. I indeed have an original copy, and have added the verification. I will be adding more updates to other Planet Story issues as time allows. Love the site!

Edits to Planet Stories on Hold

I've put your edits to the issues of Planet Stories that were verifed by me on hold for now. Crediting artists is a thorny issue, see this discussion. We generally use the approach outlined by Mhhutchins, with the only problem being that the canonical name is not defined for a lot of artists. I'm going to go recheck my issues before making a decision on your edits. I inadvertently approved one edit, which I may reverse.--Rkihara 03:31, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Edits to Summer 1949 rejected. As noted, we use the canonical names (working names) for authors/illustrators, and it's not established in my mind that Alden Williams is canonical for A. Williams, or Vincent Napoli vs Napoli, since there are more entries for the latter forms - although someone made the lesser used forms canonical. Reversing the relationship is not easy. Canonical names for illustrators are not very well defined so tread carefully. If you feel that a certain for should be canonical please post your case on the community forum. Note that initials always have a period after them, unless the author's canonical name is without them (only a few).
Edits rejected, Fall 1947. Vestal and Napoli as noted above. The illustration on pp. 67 is clearly signed "Hardison," not "Harrison." The signature on p. 115 is somewhat indistinct, but is mostly identical to the signature on p.67 which is clear. H. W. Kiemle is the canonical name, not Henry William Kiemle.
Edits rejected, Summer 1948. Martin (III) is a disambiguation, if you are certain that his full name is "Chester Martin' you can add that to Martin (III) as his legal name. Illustration on p. 103 is clearly signed "Hardison" not Harrison. Editorial credits for Meilink at the bottom of the illustrations, so this should be varianted to the canonical name if there was one.
Edits rejected, Summer 1946. Editorial credits for illustrations; p. 37, "Doolin," p. 61, "C. Martin," "Leydenfrost" (also canonical on ISFDB) on p. 95, and "Kiemle", on p. 103.
Edits accepted, Spring 1949.--Rkihara 17:44, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Scottandelli 07:15, 22 August 2014 (UTC) Sorry about the artist names. I use the artist's full name in my work, so it's second nature to me. I defer to your judgement. I don't now why I put 'Harrison'.. that artist should be George Hardison... brain freeze!

Planet Stories, Summer 1942 (again)

Hello, can you check the artist for _Task to Lahri_ and _The Cosmic Derelict_. Is he explicitely credited as entered: "Alexander Deydenfrost" or did you infer his name from his signature (in this case it's likely "Leydenfrost"). Thanks. Hauck 13:16, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Planet Stories, Spring 1940 / The Man Who Killed WHAT?

Hi, In your verified copy of Planet Stories, Spring 1940 there is a story 'The Man Who Killed the Earth'. That is only true for the TOC however. The story that begins on page 94 is 'The Man Who Killed the World'. Note also that you can import content (interior art) from the 2010 reprint.--Dirk P Broer 11:18, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Don't worry, I already changed the story's title. This is something I should have caught way back when. MLB 21:02, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
By the way, IDing artists through their signatures can be tricky, everybody gets it wrong sometimes. MLB 21:05, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm planning to add other entries (interior art, departments, letters, etc) to complete this listing. I think everything in so far is correct, just need to add some things. Thanks, Ldb001 23:45, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
