Welcome!

Hello, Surcouf, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 16:43, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Linking uploaded images to the database record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link those images to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 16:44, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. One more clarification about this: You need to use the whole URL, e.g., http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/2/2d/FLLWTHDRM1981.jpg, not just the file name (FLLWTHDRM1981.jpg). As Michael describes, from the page that displays after you are done uploading (e.g, here), right-click on the picture or on the link immediately below the picture, and pick "Copy Shortcut" (Internet Explorer) or "Copy Link Location" (Firefox) or something similar if you're using a different browser. Then paste that into the Edit This Pub form. The system unfortunately does not figure it out on its own. Maybe someday. Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 10:35, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Cover image file upload limits

Please do not upload files for cover images which are larger than 150 KB or taller than 600 pixels in height. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:47, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Turtledove's Videssos Cycle: Volume One

I've accepted the submission adding this record, but have had to correct almost every field. Please read this Help page which gives specifically how each field of a publication record should be entered.

Please keep in mind the following changes when you're making any future submissions.

  1. Publication Date (Year) field was changed to "2013-04-02" indicating April 2, 2013. This is the format used for all date fields in ISFDB record.
  2. Publisher field was changed from "Random House Publishing Group" to "Del Rey / Ballantine". We give the name of the publisher that is stated on the title page.
  3. Publication Format field was changed from "6.24 (w) x 9.04 (h) x 1.44 (d)" to "tp" which is the ISFDB designation for a trade paperback, i.e. a softcover book that is more than 7.25 inches tall.
  4. ISBN/Catalog # field was changed from "ISBN-13: 9780345542588" to "9780345542588". You should only enter the number. The system knows it's an ISBN.
  5. Price field was changed from "$12.14" to "$18.95". We give the stated list price of the publication, not how much it costs.
  6. The image you linked in the Image URL field was uploaded incorrectly. You used the link of another publication record to upload it to the ISFDB server. You have to wait until a record has been created for the cover you're uploading and use the "Upload Cover Scan" link of that record to upload its cover. Since there is an image of the cover on Amazon, I've changed the link to that file. I will delete the image file you uploaded to the ISFDB server.
  7. Publication Series and Publication Series Number field were incorrectly used. "Videssos Cycle" is a title series, not a publication series. This help page explains the difference. Title series data can only be entered into a title record, not a publication record. (The title record is for the work, the publication record is for one single publication of the work. There can be dozens of publications of the same work.) I will remove the data you gave in the publication series field and add it to the series field of the title record.
  8. You did not enter the source for your data. If you're working from the book itself, you must tell the ISFDB moderator, in the "Note to Moderator" field that you have the book in hand, so that we don't have to do further research to confirm the data. If you're working from a secondary source, such as the listing on Amazon.com, you must add that fact to the "Note" field of the submission, i.e. "Data from Amazon.com as of 2013-04-01".

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 14:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, after all that work (for both of us) I discover that there was already a record for this publication in the database!. I'll delete it and let this one remain. In the future, do a search for the work to determine whether there is an existing record for the publication. Mhhutchins 15:00, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Cover image for Judge Dredd

I had to delete the image you uploaded for this title for a couple of reasons. First it was uploaded directly to the ISFDB server when it should have been uploaded from the publication record using the "Upload Cover Scan" link. Also, the image exceed the ISFDB standards for image dimensions which should be no more than 600 pixels in height. I've resized the file and then uploaded it correctly to the ISFDB server, and linked it to the publication record. Mhhutchins 00:08, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Linking cover files to the publication records

Please read the instructions above concerning linking the covers that you've uploaded to the publication records. Without this second step the images will not appear on the database publication records. Mhhutchins 23:50, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
