The Foundation Trilogy

I have your update to The Foundation Trilogy on hold for the moment. Some of the changes look like an improvement to the publication record. A couple of items caught my attention and so I'm running them past both you and the person or originally verified the publication. For the record, the existing notes are

  • Signed edition of an unspecified limited number of copies.
  • There are three plates with the Michael Whelan covers for the 1985 Del Rey paperback editions, but without text.
  • This special leatherbound gilt-edge limited edition is part of the “Masterpieces of SF” series and is available by subscription only.
  • No ISBN, no printed price

and you want to replace that with

  • Some unspecified limited number of copies of ths edition were signed.
  • Unsigned copies of this edition also exist.
  • Also available by subscription to the Easton Press' "Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series" - item 1562-003.

My thoughts are that the publication notes should document what's stated in the publication and if data is from another source the source should be cited. I'll assume the existing publication notes reflect this practice.

I don't think ISFDB has a specific policy about signed-editions and assume as signing is normally done after publication we don't care that some copies may be signed. However, it's possible in the case that the publisher did a special print run where the publication includes a note about signing. If that's the case it can be documented and is a distinct publication from the ones that don't have this note. It's not clear to me if "Signed edition of an unspecified limited number of copies" in the existing notes reflects that the publication has a note about a signed limited-edition print run or if this is from another source and the publication itself can't be distinguished from unsigned sold by Easton Press.

For the record I see on the Easton Press web site

  • Isaac Asimov's FOUNDATION SERIES is a five-book set that includes what they call The Original Foundation Trilogy though the picture shows it's titled The Foundation Trilogy.
  • Masterpieces of Science Fiction is a subscription program for an unspecified list of titles and that some publications are signed. Presumably The Foundation Trilogy is still included in the mix for this program. The existing publication notes document that at one time the program shipped signed copies of The Foundation Trilogy. It also seems like the author signed copies in this program can't be distinguished from unsigned copies (meaning the publication does not bear a special notice about that it's part of a limited/signed print run).
  • Signed First Editions of Science Fiction is a subscription series. Asimov is mention and Prelude to Foundation is visible in the photo. We don't know if The Foundation Trilogy was or is offered via this program. Also visible is a book that is signed and from that photo I'd say that the signed publication's can't be distinguished from their unsigned versions.
  • I wonder if anyone's ever documented what's available under Easton programs such as 100 Greatest Books Ever Written and how often this list changes.
  • I could not find a way to purchase an individual copy of The Foundation Trilogy.

I'm sorry about the longish note, particularly as the first note to a new ISFDB editor, but I'm planning using some of this to update Publisher:The Easton Press but need to know if they did special print runs for their signed copies and perhaps if we should document what publications have been available under their various programs. I placed the original notes on the record and verified it. I believe that Wlapant was adding additional notes (all of which may be true), but was not aware that he was replacing the existing notes.
