Printing date and number

From 1953 through 1968 Ace used lettered catalog numbers. There is no printing date nor number in these publications though the copyright and price can be used to bracket when the publication may have been published. For the most part these publications are dated via secondary sources.

In 1969 Ace started using five digit catalog numbers. The last digit of these numbers tend to show the printing number.

  • Catalog numbers ending in 0 or 5 are a first printing.
  • Catalog numbers ending in 1 or 6 are a second printing.
  • Catalog numbers ending in 2 or 7 are a third printing.
  • Catalog numbers ending in 3 or 8 are a fourth printing.
  • Catalog numbers ending in 5 or 9 are a fifth printing.

If a publication went into a sixth or later printing Ace usually continued numbering up past 5 or 9. This pattern can be used to detect possible missing editions. For example, the 4th printing is not shown on ISFDB meaning a bibliographer should search to see if it exists.

   * The Sioux Spaceman / And Then the Town Took Off, (1960 , Richard Wilson, Andre Norton, Ace Double, #D-437
   * The Sioux Spaceman, (1966 , Andre Norton, Ace, #F-408, $0.40, 133+10pp, pb)
   * The Sioux Spaceman, (1969 , Andre Norton, Ace, #76801, 133+11pp, pb)
   * The Sioux Spaceman, (1974 , Andre Norton, Ace, #76802, 160pp, pb)
   * The Sioux Spaceman, (Aug 1984 , Andre Norton, Ace, 0-441-76804-0, $2.50, 160pp, pb)

This pattern continued after Ace switched to using ISBNs. At a later date Ace adopted the convention used by many publishers where they don't change the ISBN and instead use a number line on the copyright page.
