Galaxy was started by an Italian company (Edizioni Mondiale) which was trying to get a foot-hold into the American marketplace. After failing once with a magazine called Fascination, they approached H. L. Gold (via Vera Cerutti, a previous employee of Gold's) for ideas. Naturally, he suggested a science fiction magazine; they accepted the idea and made him editor. The first issue appeared in October of 1950.

Gold, an agoraphobic who ran Galaxy from his apartment, remained editor until the October 1961 issue (actually he was hospitalized in 1959, but Pohl left him on the masthead until 1961). From there, the magazine changed editorship a number of times until its demise in 1980. Galaxy was revived in 1994, and managed to publish 8 issues before returning to the dead.

Thanks to Edwin M. Schaefer for the use of his collection in reconstructing this data. Most of the information from 1969 thru 1979 was supplied by Michael J. Cross (mike@mjckeh.demon.co.uk). Holes in the 1969-1971 era were filled by the Schaefer collection, which was also the sole source for 1965-1968 data. The 1994-1995 data for the revived Galaxy was supplied by Robert E. Rogoff. The 1953-1958 data was derived from the NESFA database. The 1950-1952, plus the Oct58, Nov58, Dec58, Feb76, Mar76, Jul75, Aug75, and Jan74 data was supplied by User:Ahasuerus. The Feb60, Apr60, Feb61, Jun61, Aug61, Oct62, Dec62, 1963-1964 data was supplied by Dave Kauffman. The Aug62, Aug60, Aug59, Jun59, Apr59, and Feb59 data was supplied by Doug Lee.
