Welcome!

Hello, Catkhan, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 02:33, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

The Gentlewomen of Evil

I accepted your submission for this clone; I shortened the publisher to just 'Taplinger' to avoid the instalment of a new publisher with no connection to the one established before. I also added the month of publication.

If you primary verify a publication it is meaningful to change and add notes. For example, the line from where the contents are drawn should be dropped, since now the actual publication is the source. Notes to be added can be along the lines in this example or even more extensive as in this one. This does help enormously to provide quality information, to suplly information about the art and to tell different editions and printings apart. Thank you, Stonecreek 19:10, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. I will work on doing better!

City of Hope & Despair

When you do a primary verification of a publication record (like this one), please remove or update any note giving a secondary source. If the data for any field isn't stated in your copy of the publication, only then should you provide the source for that data. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:53, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Recent Edits

I have approved your recent edits, but had to make some changes to bring them in-line with ISFDB standards:

  • ISBN: Only one number goes in the ISBN field. The software with do the appropriate translations to show both. It should be the ISBN version that was on the publication (typically ISBN13 after 2007 and ISBN10 before; if both listed, use the ISBN13).
  • Price: The price field should have the currency symbol as we deal in multiple currencies.
  • Interior Art: Interior art credits should not be listed in in the publication Artist field. Rather, they should be listed in the content section. You should create a new content entry with a Entry Type of INTERIORART.
    • General interior art (a single record to record all art) should be entered with the title matching the publication.
    • Maps should be entered with a title matching the publication + "(map)"; ex. "Havemercy (map)".

There are also a couple of items that need follow-up:

  • Cat Cross Their Graves: The note says "From the title page:". I believe this should be "From the copyright page:"?
  • Publication Dates: The publication date should match the publication (like you did with Cat Cross Their Graves). If the publication does not have a publication date, then you need to state where the date is coming from. City of Dreams & Nightmare, Shadow Magic, and Havemercy all dates with the day listed. As this is unusual for a book, please update these publication to match the publication date in the book. Or, if there is not a date listed in the book, then add a statement as to what secondary source was used for the date (ex. "Publication date from Amazon.com as of 2014-05-25").

Also, you may wish to consider using HTML lists vs. asterisks. They are pretty easy to use and result in a cleaner display. See the "Unnumbered Lists" section of this help page.

We do appreciate your submissions. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning, but everything should be in the help links in the welcome message above. We hope you will continue to contribute. And please let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking). -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. As you must have surmised, I am new at this; still working on internalizing the standards. I will make the changes you have noted, and keep reading the help pages. Catkhan 15:47, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Wrede edits

Hi,

A new item for the learning curve: A summary is better in the title record's defined Synopsis field - it applies to all publications of that title. I've accepted your Calling On Dragons publication edit, but then editted out your synopsis & moved it to the title record.

I've accepted your Dealing with Dragons edit, but the Notes content could be changed to an unnumbered list (HTML) now that there are 2 points in the Notes. (Actually, your new point might be better in the title record - in Notes there - with additional reference to it being from the copyright page of 1992 Scholastic edition.)

Thanks for making these edits. --clarkmci / j_clark 01:28, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I have taken your suggestion, and moved the reference to the previous publication of the first two chapters to the Notes section of the title record. Catkhan 20:18, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

maps

Hi,

Another for the learning curve: Maps can be added as INTERIORART.

To put in interior art, select Edit Publication, then scroll down to the Contents section. Click the Add title button. Fill in the new "row". Usually put the title of map interior art as, e.g., Hawkspur (maps) --clarkmci / j_clark 02:09, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks again for the pointers. I really appreciate the input from the moderators - and hope to need it less in the future! Catkhan 20:20, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Updates to records: sourcing or verifying

When updating records, if you are working from the book itself, do a primary verfication first, which lets the moderator know your updates are based on the actual publication. If you are working from a secondary source, give that source in the Note field. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 02:37, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

I got it backwards, then. I (mis)understood the instructions. As stated elsewhere, I really appreciate the input from the moderators, and will hope to need it less in the future. Catkhan 20:22, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Bound in Blood

I accepted the submission changing the price and date field of this record assuming you were working from the actual publication. (See previous record about either sourcing or verifying.)

As mentioned in another previous message, you have the option (but aren't required) to create content records for maps using the INTERIORART type. They should be titled in this format "Title of Work (map)". So the one for this work would be titled "Bound in Blood (maps)" (because there's more than one) with P. C. Hodgell credited in the author/artist field.

Also when entering the record number of another database into the Note field of an ISBN record, you should enter it in this format "Name of database: Record number"

So, a record from the Library of Congress would be entered as "LCCN: 2014123456", from Worldcat as "OCLC: 1234567", etc. You also have the option of creating a link to these records from the ISFDB record. Just ask if you need assistance on how to create links in the Note field of ISFDB records.

Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:52, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I've been working only with books from my collection, so I did have the book in my hand while making the edits. Thank you again for pointing me in the right directions.Catkhan 20:24, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
and would you be kind enough to point me at directions to create the links in the Notes field? I would like to do a better job. Catkhan 20:27, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Here are the links to the more important help pages:
  1. The most important page in the help section is this one. It's a field-by-field guide on creating and updating records.
  2. Once you've mastered that, here is a list of the most common "secondary" functions: How to...
  3. The specific help you need to link from the Note field of a publication record is given on the above list, and it is Using HTML in Note Fields.
Thank you for choosing to contribute to the ISFDB as an editor. Adding and updating publication records in the ISFDB is not a simple process. We don't expect all editors to get it right the first time, and we know it may take some time to learn the ins and outs, and all of the tricks. Please be patient with us as we guide you through this complicated and/or confusing process. (Believe me, we've all been there!) We will try our best to also be patient, but being human, it may appear that a moderator can be nitpicking, and may even seem to be overbearing at times. Please be assured that it isn't personal, and we're only trying our best to achieve the quality of data that our users have come to expect. Together we can build a better database. If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to inquire at the help desk. Again, thank you for becoming a vital part of the ISFDB. Mhhutchins 02:08, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the links. I find I am still getting lost in the help pages - bookmarking them will help me. No offense has been taking - I am truly grateful for the input.Catkhan 03:14, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Hellforged

You changed the date field of this record to "2010-12-00" which indicates December 2010, but the note you added says it was published in January 2011. In that case, the date field should read "2011-01-00". Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:54, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

I have corrected the date field to the accurate 2011-01-00. Apologies for the error. Catkhan 20:35, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Cat Deck the Halls

Submission to add a new publication record for this title was accepted, but there are a few problems.

  • The currency isn't indicated. US currency is given with the dollar sign: "$"
  • The ISBN is not a valid number. Please check the book again to see if it was entered correctly. If so, add a hash tag or number sign "#" before the number which will remove the bad ISBN warning, and then add a note that the ISBN is invalid.
  • You failed to close the unnumbered list using HTML in the Note field. You don't have to close individual lines when using HTML, but you must close lists. That's done by adding "

" at the end.

Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:59, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

I have made the indicated changes; and I will try to do better in the future! Catkhan 20:40, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
You are doing amazingly well for a new editor. Please bear with us if it seems like we're overwhelming you with new information. Just proceed at your own pace, and you'll be editing like a pro before long! Mhhutchins 02:11, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Excerpts

If you want to, you can record excerpts as shortfiction content entries in publications that have them. To do so, use the excerpted novel's title plus " (excerpt)" at the end. See Help:Screen:EditPub#Title_2 in the Content Information section of the help. You are under no obligation to record these, although another verifier might come along and choose to do so. I'm only mentioning it so that you're aware of the option. --MartyD 02:04, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

thanks for the tip! I was wondering how best to note excerpts.Catkhan 03:15, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Rose Daughter

I accepted the submission updating this record, but wonder about the conflict between the publication date stated in the Note field and the one given in the Date field. It appears the Date field should be 2008-07-00. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 19:31, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

You are correct. I have made the change. Catkhan 21:16, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

King Solomon's Mines

Are you certain of the publication date you gave in this record? In your help request you gave 1895 as the publication date, and that conforms with the publisher changing its name in 1893 from "George Munro" to "George Munro's Sons". Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:33, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

You made a second submission to add another record for the same publication. I assume it's because you wanted to add the OCLC record. Unfortunately, if I approve it, there will be two records in the database for the same publication. If you've discovered that you've made a mistake or want to add more information to a record, either cancel the first submission, or wait until it has been accepted and then update that record to correct mistakes or add further data. I will reject the submission and you can update the record I accepted. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:36, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

The date I entered is a result of letting my fingers go unchecked. I will revise for the 1895 date. And I realized after I went back and added the OCLC number that I should have canceled the submission. When I update the publication date I will add the OCLC number. Thanks for your patience. Catkhan 21:54, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
I've made the changes discussed above. Again, your patience is appreciated. Catkhan 20:44, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Bullard of the Space Patrol

I have your submission to update this record, but can not accept it because your Note to the Moderator states you're working from a third printing. You should use the clone function to create a new record for the later printing. Also, are you certain that "3 HC 154" is a catalog number? Most publishers don't give catalog numbers for hardcovers (that started with ISBNs in the late 60s/early 70s). Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:50, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

After I got into it, I realized that I should not be trying to verify from the 3rd printing. As for the "3 HC 154", I am reasonably sure it is a catalog number. The other Bullard I verified (the World Junior Library edition) has "HC 755" printed in the same location on the copyright page. So "3 HC 154" indicated to me "third printing hard cover 154"; where "HC 755" indicates to me "hard cover 755". Catkhan 22:02, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
From your description, it appears to be this publisher's printing data, and not a catalog number. Nevertheless, if you think the "154" part is a catalog number, then give that in the ISBN/Catalog # field, and note where it came from in the Note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:24, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
One of the many benefits to me of becoming an editor here is learning how much I don't know. I think I will leave the "154" alone! Thanks. Catkhan 20:48, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Creating bulleted notes

Try to avoid the use of "<br>•" to create "false" bullets, if possible. Use HTML to create unnumbered lists. Here is the help page which explains how to create unnumbered lists in HTML. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:31, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Adding a new publication of a title already in the database

You should not use the "Add New Novel" function to add a publication for a work already in the database. That creates a new title record for the work, duplicating the existing one. To add a new publication for Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper, go to the work's title record and click on the link "Add Publication to This Title" under the Editing Tools menu. Ordinarily, I would have accepted the submission, and then merged the two title records. But in this case, you entered the author as "Cooper, Susan" which wold have created a new author in the database by that name. Mhhutchins 18:04, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification. And for your patience. Catkhan 18:12, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

The Dark Is Rising

I'm holding the submission to change the Note in this record giving the source of the date from the 3rd printing to the 1st printing. Is the publication date given in your copy of the publication? Mhhutchins 18:07, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

On reviewing my copy more carefully After Caffeine, (and comparing it with the other volumes in the series we own) I see I have the 2nd printing rather than the first as I had thought. The only print date given is for the first printing - December 1989. So I made the Note change submission in error, and apologize.Catkhan 18:23, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I've rejected the submission. You have the option to cancel a submission by going to the "My Pending Edits" link on the Home Page. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:27, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Magic Rises - minor update

Hi, I made a minor change to the "Notes" on your verified edition of Magic Rises -- added Canada price, took away note about "from a later edition" since that is no longer true, we have both viewed the actual book. BungalowBarbara 04:45, 8 August 2014 (UTC) Catkhan 20:56, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Thanks!

Minor changes to Cast in Sorrow

I have made some minor changes to Cast in Sorrow -- added to the Notes, also added the cover artist (source described in Notes). BungalowBarbara 03:18, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Minor changes to Cast in Shadow

I have made some minor changes to Cast in Shadow -- added to the Notes, updated cover link to more stable version, also added the cover artist (source described in Notes). BungalowBarbara 21:57, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

On the Prowl, minor additions

I have added to the notes for your verified copy of On the Prowl. Added Canada price, notes about info on copyright page, notes about appearance of cover. No changes or deletions. BungalowBarbara 05:32, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Minor changes to Magic Burns

Added to the notes for Magic Burns - more about information on copyright page. BungalowBarbara 02:01, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Atwood collection

Re this publication record: I had to make several changes based on ISFDB standards (the documentation of which you'll find linked in the Welcome section above).

The publisher was changed to "Bantam Books". A currency symbol ($) was entered into the price field. And the cover artist credit was changed to show two persons and not the collective credit which you provided. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 05:21, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

I made a submission to add a cover image from Amazon. Uzume 22:54, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days

I made the following changes to this record: Added a currency symbol to the price, changed the publisher to "Ace Books", removed the publication series number (where did "5844" come from?) Another question: Are you saying the information is from the 4th printing, or is this record for the 4th printing? If the latter, then the note should just say it's the 4th printing. Mhhutchins|talk 05:28, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Uh-oh. Just saw another big problem. You entered it under the French title (which is the same as the English title, but the language of the text is French. The language field of the record is clearly marked as French. I'll have to unmerge it from that title and place it under the English one. Be certain in the future that you're entering a publication under the proper title. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 05:31, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
And then after all that I see that there is already a record for the 4th printing in the database. So I will delete the record you created and ask that you do another primary verification of this record. Mhhutchins|talk 05:35, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction - and patience. Been too long since I tried anything here and I have apparently forgotten too much. I will do as requested. Catkhan 18:55, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Lies & Omens

Re the note you added to this record: if the title page is given as Lies and Omens that's what should be given in the title field of the record. If the title is given as Lies & Omens on the title page, please adjust the note accordingly. This may sound trivial, but someone could attempt to change the title of the publication based on how your note is stated. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 20:40, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

This isn't trivial; thanks for the catch! I will adjust the note; it is indeed "&". Catkhan 20:55, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Work credited to two persons/entities

In cases like this, you should use the "Add Artist" button to add credit for the second person or entity. Please edit the record by entering "Trevillion" into one field and "Getty Images" into the other. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 23:10, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Done. Thanks. Catkhan 23:39, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

"Price Family Guide"

Re this title: I added a colon to separate the title from the subtitle. I also changed it from SHORTFICTION to ESSAY, since it appears be closer to the latter than the former. Mhhutchins|talk 01:01, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

I did waffle a bit on how to categorize a fictional field guide! Catkhan 07:48, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Excerpts

Hello, I've approved your submission for this pub but normalized the name of the excerpt to this title as per ISFDB rules (I supposed that this shortstory was an excerpt of a larger work). Hauck 18:18, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you. I should have checked the format more completely. Catkhan 20:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Updating primary verified records

Re the submission updating this record: It is ISFDB etiquette to inform the verifying editor of primary verified records of any change you want to make to the record. Most active editors have a notice preference at the top of their talk pages. If the verifying editor is inactive (there should be a notice of inactivity at the top of their talk pages), a message of the change should be made on the moderator noticeboard. Some "destructive" changes should be discussed before making a submission. Some additional changes can be made simultaneously with a notification. Please leave a message on the verifying editor's page about adding a map content record to the publication record.

Also, generic titles should be disambiguated to avoid accidental merging of identical titles. In the case of maps, they should be titled "Title of Work (map)". So the title of the map in this record should be "Gsnymede (map)". I will accept the submission and change the title. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 22:08, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Also, you changed the page count to "346", but there is a content starting on page 347. We include all pages of text in the publication, not just the pages of the novel. Please read this section of the main help page to determine what goes in the page count field. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 22:11, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you. I will keep trying. (Although it may not look like it, I actually *have* read the help pages. It seems I have not retained that information!) Catkhan 18:14, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Verifying previously sourced records

Re this publication record: When you do a primary verification of a publication, be sure to adjust the previously stated source for the data. If all the data appears in the book itself, the note should be removed. If any data is from a secondary source, then correct the source note by stating which data is not in the book. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 19:45, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Also, the note you entered into the Note to Moderator field about the pagination disappeared once the submission was accepted. That field should only be used for messages to the moderator about the submission. Anything about the publication should be entered into the Note field. Mhhutchins|talk 19:45, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

ok. thank you. Catkhan 04:13, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Hello, perhaps should this essay be disambiguated along the lines of Afterwords (Mister Monday). Thanks. Hauck 18:42, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

yes. (more on my learning curve). could you point me towards the instructions on how to do that? Catkhan 19:02, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
The more general method is to go to the essay's title page here, then just change the title by using the "Edit Title Data" hyperlink on the left and modifying the requisite field. After your submission is approved, this will change the title in all concerned publications. Hauck 13:12, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Cover art credit for Cast in Fury

Re this record: Perhaps the "not" isn't supposed to be in the Note field. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. Mhhutchins|talk 00:12, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

You would be right! I've made the correction. Changing a sentence in mid-type is clearly a bad idea. Catkhan 00:18, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Changes to Broken Homes by Ben Aaronovitch

I have made changes to Broken Homes. I added to the Notes concerning exact information on copyright page, etc. Also, I noticed that the person who verified the UK hardcover edition had listed the “Architectural and Historical Notes” at the end as a separate title. So I added that to Notes and imported it to contents. Sounds OK? BungalowBarbara 22:17, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Cover and Canada price for Cast in Fury

I have some questions about Cast in Fury, which you verified. 1) The copy I have has a Canada price of $14.95 on the back cover (above the bar code). Does yours? 2) Mine has no printing number line on the copyright page. I assume yours is the same (it seems to be standard for Luna books). Is this correct? 3) The cover on mine is slightly different from the picture currently used. My copy has "New York Time Bestselling Author" just above the author name, as in this image instead. What about yours? Thanks. BungalowBarbara 01:15, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

I have now viewed 3 copies from local libraries. One had the cover currently used, two others had the slightly different cover. All had Canada price of $14.95. I have added to Notes for this book about: 1) Canada price 2) link to author's page 3) notes about different versions/covers I viewed. Per moderator suggestion here. Additions to verified "Frost Burned"

I have made some additions to your verified copy of Frost Burned. I added to Notes - more information about what is on copyright page, Canada price, notes about cover, link to archived Amazon site. I imported the Map and Author's Note from the verified hardcover edition, for consistency. OK? BungalowBarbara 22:30, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Date of "The Ghost"

According to Michael Flowers, "The Ghost" is a chapter from the 1862 novel The Channings. I hope you can confirm that -- the novel is online at Google Books. Being as I don't know when the chapter was first published as a stand-alone story, I've changed the date from 1862 to 0000-00-00. Please correct me if you have further information. --Vasha 04:59, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Minor changes to Magic Slays

I have made some minor changes to the Notes for Magic Slays. I changed "Data from Locus Magazine #607 as of 2012-09-01" to "Mentioned in Locus Magazine #607" because the data given is actually all from the verified book itself. Added "Cover note: Author name & title embossed. Name in metallic light green, title in metallic silver" and a link showing exact publication date. BungalowBarbara 23:44, 20 July 2018 (EDT)
