Welcome!

Hello, Debolestis, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Hauck 09:32, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Translators for new publications

When adding a new publication, you can add the translator in the Title Notes in that first request (you already add it in the publication node, just scroll up and add it in the title note as well. We need them in the Title level because we have separate title per translator when more than one translator translated the same work in the same language. This eliminates one edit. I had been copying them post approval (because otherwise they will show up on a report anyway) but thought I may bring it up to you as well. Does not work for essays and stories (these will need individual edits post approval) but novels and non-fiction and collections/anthologies can be done that way. And thanks for adding the transliterations! :) Annie 12:46, 29 August 2019 (EDT)

No problem, what you say makes sense but I have never thought about it. I'll pay attention in the future. And one morequestion.I now have more than 100 messages in my inbox, can I delete or archive them? Debolestis 15:37, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
I archived all but the first message and this one -- and added a link for the archive. Feel free to do something similar any time you want (or move the first one out if you prefer as well). Feel free to reorganize any way you like :) 16:18, 29 August 2019 (EDT)
This is great, Thank you! Debolestis 12:10, 30 August 2019 (EDT)

Question about translators

Any idea who translated the stories here? I suspect Zoran Živković (considering that he is the editor) but... can you verify/check? Thanks! Annie 21:31, 30 August 2019 (EDT)

Or here by any chance? :) Annie 21:32, 30 August 2019 (EDT)
I added translator for first publication. In second there are translators mentioned, except for "The Bicentennial Man" because it was not mentioned i publication. One more question, what if publisher is a person? I have a few publications that are "self published by ..." Do I enter the name or names for publisher? Debolestis 07:16, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
For self published, we use the name of the author as a publisher. In case it has more than one author, pick one of them :) Annie 12:24, 31 August 2019 (EDT)
Just to be sure, in this case I use author of a novel as publisher? Debolestis 03:35, 1 September 2019 (EDT)
Yep. See [1] as an example. Add a note that it is self published and any other details the book has if you want but the publisher and the author will be the same string. Annie 11:47, 1 September 2019 (EDT)
PS: for cases where we do not know the translator and cannot find it, we still add a Tr template (saying “an uncredited hand” instead of a name). Or something along these lines. Annie 11:47, 1 September 2019 (EDT)
I think we misunderstood. I have this publication http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?729521 It is published by http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?18773 and a few others. Later they established "Polaris publishing studio", I don't know what to do, I entered as publisher Polaris, Belgrade, but that is not correct, it is mentioned that this is independent publication by four people. It was like that because of laws back then. Debolestis 04:41, 3 September 2019 (EDT)
OK, that is... interesting. It is up to you how to handle that. I would probably just use Polaris (if mentioned inside of the book?) and add a note explaining the situation inside of the pub and on the publisher site. Or you can leave Publisher empty and explain in the pub. Or you can just use the author name and again explain in the pub notes. The DB was created for mostly English-language books and its expansion is bringing challenges (like this one). So do what you feel right, add notes and maybe one day we will have other options.
We go by what is on the book - if Polaris is not mentioned, I would not put it under Polaris quite honestly - even if I know it WILL be Polaris one day. Does this make sense? Annie 13:44, 4 September 2019 (EDT)
Yes, that makes sense, I'll correct publisher info on Polaris publications soon. Thank you! Debolestis 09:23, 6 September 2019 (EDT)

Trilogija o Zemljomorju

Hello again,

Are there any details in this book on which translator translated what exactly? Was it a collaboration or did they translate separate novels? Annie 20:52, 4 September 2019 (EDT)

Same question for Polarisova SF antologija 1993? If we do not have more information, we can go for a "Sonja Janoski and/or Mirjana Živković" in the stories (which won't be very useful when/if we get around to building a proper system but is better than nothing). But if we can figure it who did what, that would be better. Thanks!
If you ever get bored and feel like working on translators, feel free to check this report and figure out any Serbian or Croatian entry still standing. :) Annie 20:56, 4 September 2019 (EDT)
Unfortunately translators are mentioned only at the beginning of publications and I don't know who translated which story. I had similar situation before and I used Translated by TRANSLATOR1 & TRANSLATOR2. Is that OK?
I'll check that link as well. Debolestis 09:28, 6 September 2019 (EDT)
Yeah, thought so but had to ask :) "A & B" is perfectly fine. So is "A and/or B" on the individual stories if you have a suspicion that it is not a collaboration but a split. We do the best we can do at this point basically. If the translator is not credited, I go with "an uncredited hand". One day, if someone finds out the translator, we can change it. And when it comes down to actually moving them to a new system (one day...), it will be partially manually anyway so everything else unclear will be solved then. Annie 11:06, 6 September 2019 (EDT)

Аргонавти Всесвiту

Changed the Russian title you added to the Ukrainian version here. In cases like that FantLab shows the original language version under the main title (and in this case the record shows the 1935 publication as the Ukrainian one - the Russian is not until 1939) :) Annie 13:12, 8 September 2019 (EDT)

No problem. I am trying to identify original for http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?731382 It looks like it is this pub: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?2438610 .Maybe you can find other sources. It is about a trip to Venus of space ship named "SSSR KS 3". Bt I am not sure, maybe you can find a few first and last sentences from it Debolestis 13:24, 8 September 2019 (EDT)
this does not have the first sentence but has some names visible inside and the contents page with chapter names (click on the images under the big image). And this shows "SSSR KS 3" in the German version of that book. And here "СССР КС 3" is in the Russian version - and nowhere else for that author. So I would say that it is indeed "Сестра Земли". Plus the ship in the first book from the series was called "СССР КС 2" :)Annie 13:43, 8 September 2019 (EDT)
Yes that is it. Table of contents is identical. Thank you! Debolestis 04:21, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

Peščana planeta

Hello, even if this pub is an boxed set the pages can (and should) be added (like here). Thanks, Stonecreek 13:10, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

OK, I understand. I'll add page count. Debolestis 13:19, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

Od Lukijana do Lunjika, Povijesni pregled i antologija naučnofantastične literarture

Typo in this one? "literarture" should be "literature" I think? Annie 14:54, 10 September 2019 (EDT) "

Yes it is typo, I corrected it. Thank you! Debolestis 14:55, 10 September 2019 (EDT)
And in the same one: "Pristup i predgovor" is a generic name (ish) so needs disambiguation I think :) Annie 14:56, 10 September 2019 (EDT)
PS: Approved our fix and then fixed the two remaining titles - don't forget that the pub name is used for the title and the cover art titles during the creation but after it is created, they need to be changed separately :) Annie 14:58, 10 September 2019 (EDT)
OK, I understand, thank you for the help! Debolestis 15:01, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

Sonet o letu

So... I am finding a sonnet by the name "Poiché spiegate ho l’ali al bel desio" (by Tansillo, reproduced by Bruno). You have it as "Poi ché ho spiegato le ali" in the book - which will be mostly the same except "spiegato" is in the wrong place and has the wrong ending... Can you check your spelling when you copied the title? If it is indeed as you spelled it, I will approve it and will ping someone that knows enough Romance languages to be able to help :) Annie 02:51, 11 September 2019 (EDT)

I think that is correct, looks like https://it.wikisource.org/wiki/Pagina:Storia_della_letteratura_italiana_II.djvu/286. I Google translated the poem and it looks correct. It also seems that it is fro "De gli eroici furori" it was written in 1585. Debolestis 03:01, 11 September 2019 (EDT)
Approved :) Apparently my google-fu needs me a bit more awaken. Thanks for chasing it down. Now if you find and who translated it into Croatian, it will be perfect :) Annie 03:09, 11 September 2019 (EDT)

Directory names for authors

When setting the languages for the authors and adding a transliteration, the directory name (the last name basically) also need adjusting (if you remember about it) - we support only the standard Latin set there (A-Z,a-z) and numbers,- and so on in that field. So if there is any of the letters that require transliteration, it also needs fixing. I fixed Lalić. Thanks! :) Annie 02:54, 11 September 2019 (EDT)

No problem, I'll take care of it in the future. Debolestis 11:01, 5 October 2019 (EDT)

Rama II

Hi, there is the format missing of Your PV pub. --Zapp 06:08, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

It is now corrected, thank you! Debolestis 11:03, 5 October 2019 (EDT)

Science Fiction Monolit: knjiga druga

So who is the publisher? Because the series here is already called "Monolit Science fiction"; we can change it to Monolit but what about the publisher? What about the other book in the series?

"Izdanje prevodilaca" is set as a publisher (and I know it does not make sense at all). Any idea who is the publisher? Or is it self-published by the translators? Annie 14:04, 8 November 2019 (EST)

Hi, Series name "Monolit science fiction" is not mentioned. There are total 10 books in the series, in one of following books it is called "Monolit". "Izdanje prevodilace" means published by translators and they are: Boban Knežević, Aleksandar B. Nedeljković and Miodrag Milovanović. There is no publishing house, only those 3 individuals. Debolestis 14:13, 8 November 2019 (EST)
This was possible in Serbia in the 1980s because of loophole in the law. Translations were consider product of translator and they could publish them as they wanted. Copyright was something strange back then. It was not case in whole Yugoslavia, only Serbia had law like this. Debolestis 14:16, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Always fun with these :) We technically cannot have a publisher series without a publisher (or it will kinda not have a good place to show up in. Should we make up a publisher with the name "Boban Knežević, Aleksandar B. Nedeljković and Miodrag Milovanović"? Annie 14:32, 8 November 2019 (EST)
It is fine by me, maybe. But in Monolit 2 there is one more name "Ksenija Jovanović". Debolestis 14:38, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Hm. "Serbian Translators" maybe? With a note in the publisher what it is, what it contains and why? Or we can leave "Izdanje prevodilaca" as incorrect as it is and just add notes on what it means. Or even just "Translators" (maybe even in Serbian. Annie 14:57, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Maybe "Izdanje prevodilaca, Monolit" or similar? There will be similar situations in the future. Debolestis 15:01, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Done - if you decide you like a new one, I can rename the publisher directly later. Just let me know. Annie 15:08, 8 November 2019 (EST)
No problem, thank you for your help. Later titles in series had real publisher, but I think we are OKK with this solution. Debolestis 15:10, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Yeah, some of the publisher practices are, let's say, fun. On a separate note, can you find the titles of the stories of this Croatian book somewhere by any chance? :) Annie 15:22, 8 November 2019 (EST)
I don't have that one, but I have most of other publications from that series, there are 20 or something. I'll be on big book fair in Zagreb next week and I'll look for it. Debolestis 15:25, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Thanks a lot! Also - we have someone adding the Howard Ctoatian books based on an English-based site which may have some curious issues with spelling and so on. If you do not mind checking these and see if they look ok to you (click through to the books), it will be appreciated. I fixed a few things I saw but I do not really speak Croatian so I cannot spot a problem as I did with the Bulgarian books. Annie 15:29, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Only two titles are wrong: Bozanstvo u kugli should be Božanstvo u kugli, Nasilnia u kuci should be Nasilnia u kući (if Nasilnia is a name than it is OK)Debolestis 15:34, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Just send updates, I will approve them. Nasilnia is not a name (the English title is "Rogues in the House". Any guess what that word should be really? And thanks! Annie 15:48, 8 November 2019 (EST)
It could be Nasilnija, that means more violent (feminine). Debolestis 15:51, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Any chance to check the actual book eventually? In the meantime, feel free to fix based on that. Annie 15:58, 8 November 2019 (EST)
No problem, if I find it I'll make corrections. Debolestis 16:01, 8 November 2019 (EST)
I changed them based on your notes above and added a note in the ones we are not sure about. Thanks again for your help with those! Annie 16:18, 8 November 2019 (EST)

Feniks bez pepela

Is this the complete version or is it abridged? If it is the complete, we will need to make it a novel as the original is one (or so we believe...) :) Annie 16:03, 8 November 2019 (EST)

I don't know, but format of this book is 24 x 15 cm, so it could be, I really cannot tell, nothing else is mentioned. Debolestis 16:08, 8 November 2019 (EST)
I will convert it to a novel. As long as it does not say abridged and we cannot prove it is, we assume it is the complete novel and it takes its length from the original. Annie 16:15, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Good, I have a few other issues with this publication, but I'll fix them tomorrow. Thank you!Debolestis 16:18, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Yeah, short novels can be interesting :) When you have some time later this week/month/year, these need transliterations. I had been chipping at them but if you have time, I can use a hand. Annie 16:21, 8 November 2019 (EST)
I have made transliterations for those titles. If you have any more Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian even Slovenian let me know and I can help. Debolestis 15:22, 10 November 2019 (EST)
Thanks a lot! Serbian ones appear in its own reports so if you check this occasionally and see Serbian, they need fixing :) The author one has 2. Croatian, Slovenian and Bosnian are in the "all of the rest" and there are a few over here - towards the bottom. The pub report that matches is is here but it is empty so we are good. Series and publishers and pub series appear on their own single "all languages" report but these are usually once in a while and rarely pile up. Annie 15:31, 10 November 2019 (EST)
OK, I'll check that link from time to time. Debolestis 15:42, 10 November 2019 (EST)

Biblioljudi

So you want to have the COLLECTION 'Biblioljudi' by Gene Wolfe on pages 873-897 of Monolit 10: Almanah fantastike. Alright by me, but then you have to enter the twenty short stories that make up this collection (a translation of Bibliomen too, otherwise this will turn up in one of tomorrow's maintenance reports.--Dirk P Broer 08:39, 9 November 2019 (EST)

No problem, I'll do it. Debolestis 08:55, 9 November 2019 (EST)
Do I just add stories in "Monolit 10" or there is some other way for collections in other publications? Debolestis 12:35, 9 November 2019 (EST)
Yep, you just add the stories in Monolit 10. Annie 13:06, 9 November 2019 (EST)

Blind variants

I have a few variants for covers on hold that do not have their Serbian/Croatian images. Are you planning to add them? We try not to allow blind variants for art (mistakes happen and when you first variant, then add image, sometimes things do not get connected where they should by mistake and it remains like that for a long time). Thanks! Annie 04:44, 17 November 2019 (EST)

OK, I have just scanned everything, can you just accept the variants for now. Next time I'll do this after I upload the covers. Also I have found http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?742364 last week and made changes. 04:58, 17 November 2019 (EST)
Yep. Will do. And thanks a lot - I saw it going through and was planning to come say thanks but it had been a busy evening :) Annie 05:00, 17 November 2019 (EST)

Guja sna

Hi, About Guja sna: As this translation has only some 180 pages -as compared to 287 in my edition- it may either be the three original novelette parts of the original, or and excerpt of the novel. Please expand the title note to shine a light upon this.--Dirk P Broer 06:18, 17 November 2019 (EST)

Hi, all editions in "Monolit" series are 24 x 15 cm. That explains the difference. I'll add that information in series description. Debolestis 08:38, 17 November 2019 (EST)

Beleške o autorima (Science Fiction Monolit: knjiga druga)

I assumed that this is an essay and changed it (you added as a short fiction) :) Annie 13:22, 17 November 2019 (EST)

Istorija ciklusa o Zadužbini

Hello,

Apparently sometime in the past, two separate essays were mixed up so trying to untangle a bit. Can you check the book that contains this one. Is there an indication of the year of the original essay? I suspect that this is the essay from "Foundation and Earth", published in 1986 and not the original 1982 one (we actually have the essay from 1986 so you can look at the text or just scan for the year 1986 mentioned in the text in the translation) but weirder things had happened so... checking before I move the translation. Thanks! Annie 12:01, 10 December 2019 (EST)

I moved it under the 1986 parent - as it was the only "Foundation and Earth" edition that was still under the 1982 version. We can move it back if it turns out to be the old essay. :) Annie 14:36, 10 December 2019 (EST)
I have checked it is 1986 version. Debolestis 15:19, 13 December 2019 (EST)
Awesome. Thanks for the confirmation! Annie 15:24, 13 December 2019 (EST)

Adding external IDs and other changes

After an edit is approved, the "old state" is lost. So when adding/changing elements, it is useful to add a note in the Moderator note saying "adding OCLC" or "Adding Goodreads" or something like that. Then when someone goes to the book history like here and click on the submission ID and see who had added what and when - so if they have questions, they know which editor to ask. Annie 18:12, 1 May 2020 (EDT)

Četvrto međuledeno doba

Can you check the title page of this book? Is the author name written as Kobo Abe or as 安部公房? Someone either overcorrected when we were fixing non-Latin author names or entered it wrong to start with so making sure we have a correct author here. I will fix it based on the answer (add a note or fix the author name). Annie 18:16, 1 May 2020 (EDT)

Hi, name is written everywhere as Kobo Abe, original title mentioned is "Inter Ice Age 4". This title is probably translated from English version. Debolestis 10:16, 3 May 2020 (EDT)
Thanks! All fixed now I think :) Annie 02:23, 7 May 2020 (EDT)

Jules Verne translations

I have been documenting the various translations of Jules Verne's works and trying to identify a piece of text from each translation so editors can position their publications under the correct title record. You are on record as a primary verifier for one or more publications for which I am looking for text or which are placed under a generic translation title. I would be grateful if you could assist in this by checking your copies, as listed below, and providing the initial text for missing translations or an indication of the translation for those unspecified. These are listed on the Jules Verne Translations wiki. Thank you. ../Doug H 14:21, 10 May 2020 (EDT)

I have full scan of "Gil Braltar", and for the "Ledena Sfinga", I can scan a few pages. Is that what you need? Debolestis 05:33, 11 May 2020 (EDT)
The wiki has the opening few lines for each translation, to allow people to match up to a copy they have in hand and be comfortable they are putting a publication under the correct title. For Gil Braltar and Ledena Sfinga, the titles and wiki are missing the information. If you look at the English sections for these titles, you should get an idea of what I'm looking for. You can put the text in the publication, the associated title, the wiki, or in a response here and I'll look after getting it into the right spots. Thank you for responding. ../Doug H 09:05, 11 May 2020 (EDT)
I have added few lanes for each publication. Debolestis 10:46, 12 May 2020 (EDT)
Excellent (not that I can read it, you could be putting the Gospel of St. Luke in there for all I know). I've updated the associated titles so the text is in the database as well as the wiki. ../Doug H 13:59, 12 May 2020 (EDT)

Questions about Sirius Magazine and other submission of yours

Hello. I have quite a few of your submissions on hold, as it appears you either have not provided a source for the information you want added or modified, or you are removing information from the notes without providing reason why in the Moderator note field:

  • This submission for Sirius 81 had 'Cover artist is not credited, same cover as on "City of Illusions"', which you replaced with 'Cover artist is not credited'. Similar remark for 10 other ones I've on hold.
  • In this submission, the notes say Cover artist is not credited, yet you add a new cover art record attributed to Esteban Maroto - where did you get that information from?
  • And in this submission, the notes say Cover artist is not mentioned, yet you want to update the cover art record from Milena Mijailović to David A. Hardy. Again, can you tell me where you got the information from?

Thanks! MagicUnk 13:44, 14 May 2020 (EDT)

I have to apologize. Turns out the submissions from the first bullet point were not a problem at all - I've approved these in the meantime. The second and third bullet I couldn't figure out. Can you explain? Thanks! MagicUnk 13:54, 14 May 2020 (EDT)
I have identified artist from other ISFDB publications. Can you please a approve them and I'll connect them to those publications. I should have said something in note. Sorry. Debolestis 14:08, 14 May 2020 (EDT)
And approved! MagicUnk 16:28, 14 May 2020 (EDT)

Source for a death date: Milena Benini

Hello,

What is the source for this date? I can see the update in Wiki that she died in 2020 but not an exact date. Thanks! Annie 02:40, 5 June 2020 (EDT)

It was on social networks, and on other sites like this one https://ubiqsf.wordpress.com/2020/06/04/preminula-milena-benini-vodeca-hrvatska-fantasy-i-sf-spisateljica/ Debolestis 12:29, 5 June 2020 (EDT)
Thanks. Put these in the moderator notes next time if you do not mind - makes it easier to find. Annie 12:32, 5 June 2020 (EDT)

Polarisova SF antologija

Hello,

Can you check the titles of these (1993, '94 and '95 and their respective publications) - were they meant to have a dot at the end or was that a copy/paste error? Thanks! Annie 20:28, 29 June 2020 (EDT)

There is dot because in Croatian or Serbian ordinal numbers are written with dot at the end. It is not an error. Debolestis 05:42, 30 June 2020 (EDT)
