Welcome!

Hello, Goudsward, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 18:58, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Horror Guide to Massachusetts

Submission adding this record was accepted, but a few changes were made for it to conform to ISFDB standards. The title of the foreword was disambiguated to avoid accidental merging with identically titled records. The date was also changed to match the date of the work's publication, not the date of its composition. I also changed the page count field from "322" to "xiii+306" based on the OCLC record. If that's not correct please edit the record to update it. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 06:35, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Review vs. Essay

Hi. For this piece, the way we handle reviews in the ISFDB depends on whether what is being reviewed is speculative fiction/"genre". If it is, the normal Review mechanism is used. If it is not, we record the review as Essay and give it a title of the form "Review of <title> by <reviewerauthor>". ("Essay" is used as a catch-all for shorter-than-book-length non-fiction material). So it is being treated as a review of a non-genre work, which is why it has been typed Essay. --MartyD 08:08, 19 May 2018 (EDT)

Thanks Marty, but I remain confused as to criteria. The review is identical in length and format to the other reviews from the same magazine listed on my entry. The item being reviewed is a 176-page, hardcover fiction book, a collection of short fiction articles written by leading weird fiction writers about fictional tomes, compiled into a faux-nonfiction catalog of a Lovecraftian library. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Goudsward (talkcontribs) .
Sorry, made a typo in my original comment (now corrected). I see what you're saying. That sounds like a book we might want to catalog. What you should do in a situation like this -- where you believe data entered is incorrect -- is contact the primary verifier, if there is an active one. Here, there is. I will point him here, and you and he can decide what should be done about it. Thanks. --MartyD 21:51, 20 May 2018 (EDT)
p.s. I see we even have The Starry Wisdom Library catalogued, so this almost certainly should be switched to a standard review and be linked to that. We can see if MLB wants to do it himself. I did point him here. --MartyD 22:01, 20 May 2018 (EDT)
When entering the contents of Dark Discovery I just skimmed the review, and I'm pretty sure that the book wasn't listed on this site yet. But, I have no problem changing my listing. MLB 02:28, 21 May 2018 (EDT)

Approved, and I removed the essay and deleted it. I think everything should be ok now. Thanks, both of you. --MartyD 06:43, 21 May 2018 (EDT)
