I have removed the cover art credit to "Atelier octobre rouge" from [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?668145 your verified record of ''Un tremplin pour l'utopie''], and put it in the notes. Just a few reminders for when you add translations
 +
* You do not need to add a series or series number. When the book gets varianted, it will get them from the original. If you add them and the series is different from the original one, it remains in place after the varianting and needs to be cleaned up manually
 +
* The translator needs to be added both in the publication notes and in the title notes. Doing it during that initial submissions saves an edit downstream :)

I did the changes for [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?743955 this one] and did the variants for the cover and the novel while I was there. Thanks! [[User:Anniemod|Annie]] 15:06, 10 November 2019 (EST)

Welcome!

Hello, Jeanneretc, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!--Dirk P Broer 19:40, 27 April 2018 (EDT)

Series names

Hi, a word about series names. When you think that a publisher (e.g. J'ai Lu) has a series of let's say fantasy titles, please look first in the Publisher directory on the left. J'ai Lu will appear at the right end of the J-line under J'. You will then see a series called J'ai Lu - Fantasy. Please use that name, not Fantasy (2007 -). The same goes for other series: try to see whether the series already is there, before you enter a new series name.--Dirk P Broer 18:21, 28 April 2018 (EDT)

Thanks you and sorry for that, we all have to begin I suppose....Jeanneretc 00:10, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

Data Sources

You have entered a bunch of new pubs (which is appreciated), but you have not been entering the source of the data. If you actually have the pub, you should be checking one the "have pub" options when creating the entry which will mark the pub as verified (and defaults the data source to the publication itself). If you don't have the publication, then you should be entering the secondary source. A couple of choices are predefined (author or publisher website), but if those don't work, then you should be adding it to the publication notes. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:11, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

ok, sorry about that, I'll do it with my next pubs Jeanneretc 08:22, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

Kenningar

Hello, and a welcome from me, too! Alas, I had to reject your proposal for a variant, the two titles were identical and thus had to be merged. Stonecreek 09:29, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

Hello, I've probably missed something then as it was precisely what I was attempting to do (merged the two titles that weren't merged).... Jeanneretc 16:06, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

Notre-Dame des loups

Hello,

When changing a primary verified record, even if the change is as obvious as this one, please notify the verifier. In some cases, the title page may be the explanation for the weird spelling (remember that we get the data from the title page, not from the cover). And sometimes it is just a typo. From what I had found, it looks like a typo so I approved the change (and notified the PV). I know that the notifications slow down edits but it is a necessary step so we do not keep populating the DB with errors from other online sites (thus having the PVs so prominently shown on a page - so it is clear that someone actually had a book in hand). Thanks! Annie 16:40, 30 April 2018 (EDT)

sorry about that (still learning all the "rules"), I must admit that I did the change as the spelling mistake was quite obvious. The first publication of the title is already in the database over the correct author name. My problem yet is I do not understand how to transfer this title to a publication of the first edition title (mainly saying to the database : "553214" is not a separate title but a publication of "2199970" Jeanneretc 00:26, 1 May 2018 (EDT)
You cannot connect publications in the way you want but you can connect their titles (and that will bring the publications under the same title). it is called merging. In order to start it, you have two options:
  • If they are by the same author and the author does not have too many works, you can use "Show all Titles" from the left menu on the Author page. This will show you all titles and you can merge from there. If they are real duplciates, you can also use the "Check for Duplicate Titles" link from the author page for example or from the publication page of one of them.
  • If there are too many titles or they do not have the same author and are not real duplicates due to a typo, use Advanced Search. Its results are in the "merge" format - so you can merge from there. :)
There was a small possibility that the title page of this book had a misprint in the actual copy. In such cases, we pseudonym and variant instead of merging and keep the publication as the title page has it. That's why if you want to change a PV'd book, there is an expectation to talk to the PVs - there is someone with a real book out there. Annie 00:38, 1 May 2018 (EDT)

Sabrina Calvo

I approved your edit but there were a few changes that needed to be made:

  • The legal name is always recorded as "Last, First". Please check this help page for more details.
  • The birthplace is always recorded in the "City, Administrative division, Country" format and not "City(Country)" format. Please see this help page for more details.
  • Added the two sites you linked into the official links for the author. As one of them is used as the birth date source, it needs to be on the list.

The result is here. Thanks for your contribution. :) Annie 17:01, 30 April 2018 (EDT)

Translators

Hello again,

When adding translators to the notes of titles, it is better to use the {{Tr|Benoît Domis}} template which when saved shows up as "Translated by Benoît Domis". It is a preparation for getting a proper translators system one day. Thanks! Annie 02:49, 2 May 2018 (EDT)

Le visage de Sekt

Hello,

I approved by mistake the varianting of this one. I suspect that you were trying to create an English title for a parent? Can you either post the English title here or submit an edit so we can sort this one out - at the moment the parent and the varint have the same data :) Thanks! Annie 14:33, 21 May 2018 (EDT)

I'm not sure to see where the problem is ? It's the French translation of the face of Sekt, as fare as I can see it seems alright. But I'm not (yet) as good with the arcane of the database as you, so maybe I'm missing something... (Jeanneretc 14:40, 21 May 2018 (EDT))
It's because I've corrected this recursive variant and varianted the other texts. Hauck 14:42, 21 May 2018 (EDT)
you're too fast for me Hauck (by the way if you see something that I do wrong and add to your workload don't hesitate to tell me) (Jeanneretc 14:44, 21 May 2018 (EDT))

Variants and translations

Hello,

I did the varianting for the stories in "La Mort... ses vies". However - we cannot have both a translation and a variant. For the system a translation and a variant is the same thing - the difference is in the languages - variants have the same language; translations don't. So in the case of "Le masque de la mort rouge", it needs to become a translation of the main title only and the connection to the other Baudelaire translation have to be added in the notes (see here). Annie 16:01, 22 May 2018 (EDT)

PS: I will leave the varianting in this one for you (your notes are visible here) - let me know if you need any assistance. Annie 16:03, 22 May 2018 (EDT)
thanks, I'll do it now. Hauck is too efficient sometimes ;) I'll still enter the various data for variant in comment to moderator, but it's no problem for me to do it once approved. It's just easier to enter the various data needed when I enter the new book and come back to my proposal afterwards to finish it. (Jeanneretc 01:01, 23 May 2018 (EDT))
I used to do the same before I became a moderator - this way I could open my accepted edit and copy the data from there and do the rest once approved. Sounds like you found the same process to work for you :) I did not do any other variants on the other works you added as well - so you may way to check all your edits from today/yesterday :) Annie 01:15, 23 May 2018 (EDT)

La Mort marraine and the Twa Corbies

Hi, In your verified copy of La Mort... ses œuvres you let Twa corbies (french) be a variant of Twa Corbies (english). That's fine. However, you also want La Mort marraine (Brothers Grimm) to be a vaiant of Twa Corbies (Charles de Lint). That is not so fine. Perhaps you forgot to enter the right number and instead copied the 'variant of' of the previous request?--Dirk P Broer 11:26, 23 May 2018 (EDT)

sorry it's probably what's happen (or my past/copy that didn't work so well. I genraly chek what I've just sent but that's happen at the same moment the whole ISFDB went down... (Jeanneretc 11:33, 23 May 2018 (EDT))

Enterrer L'ombre

Hello,

Are you sure about the price here? It looks like one zero too many to me. Or maybe a wrong currency Thanks! Annie 16:42, 28 May 2018 (EDT)

Vampire portrait d'une ombre

Hello,

I have this submission on hold. Something looks weird in it - it cannot be from 2009 and still be in French Franks (or have ISBN-10). Can you check which of the two is wrong - the year or the currency? Once I know what the case is, I will accept it and fix the wrong data. Thanks! Annie 17:10, 28 May 2018 (EDT)

I'm so sorry, no idea what's crossed my mind, it's 1999-00-00 (third quarter to be exact)(Jeanneretc 01:38, 29 May 2018 (EDT))
No worries. Approved and I fixed the date on the publication and all titles inside of it. :) It happens - when you work mainly with 2xxx dates, a 1999 throws you off :) Annie 01:48, 29 May 2018 (EDT)

Pseudonyms

Hello,

After creating a pseudonym, all the titles under the pseudonym need to be varianted into the canonical name so they show up there - the same process as with the translations but instead of changing the title and date, you change the author name for the new title creation. :) Do you want to do them for the two new pseudonyms you just created? Let me know if you have any questions or need assistance. Annie 01:41, 31 May 2018 (EDT)

I'll do it (just have to figure it out how to do that) but I want to finish enter the first runs of books published by Mnémos firt when I have my collection at my side.
No worries. Thanks! Annie 01:52, 31 May 2018 (EDT)

Retrofuturo una mirada a los años 70

Hi, two questions. 1. I think the author of two stories may be entered wrong. Is the author of "Noches de carne en Harlem" actually Alfredo Álamo, and is the author of "Son ilusiones" actually Juan Manuel Santiago? 2. Could you take another look at the title page of the book and see if the part after "Retrofuturo" is a subtitle (if it's "Retrofuturo: Una mirada a los años 70")? That would make more sense... Thanks --Vasha 00:14, 5 June 2018 (EDT)

so the title : could be a subtitle I suppose. On the spine the title is Retrofuturo. Una mirada a los años 70. For the authors : for "Noches de carne en Harlem" you're right is Alfredo Álamo (at my discharged the first name is wrongly spelled in the table of contents (but correctly on the page of the short story and virtually everywhere else. The same goes for Juan Mnauel Santiago. Thanks to point that to me.(Jeanneretc 01:25, 5 June 2018 (EDT))

Anasterry

Hello,

Can you look at these two books here:

  • Do they really share an ISBN?
  • They have the same cover (different ornamentation but the same main picture) but the credit is different. Do you have an idea of what Franck Perrot had done for the first cover?

Thanks! Annie 16:42, 5 June 2018 (EDT)

My mistake for the ISBN, it's now corrected. No Idea for Franck Perrot, he appears on Noosfere for the earliest edition and not for the latest. I let it so by now and will investigate with the editor to learn more. (Jeanneretc 04:30, 6 June 2018 (EDT))

"Au sujet d'Omale" in Omale tomes 1 and 2

Hi. I merged the duplicate titles from those two Omale omnibuses, but now I wonder if I made a mistake with Au sujet d'Omale. Do you know if those are the same essay, or is the one in tome 1 different from the one in tome 2? Thanks. --MartyD 21:31, 10 June 2018 (EDT)

as far as I know it's the same. I'll investigate and when I know more, I'll come back to tell (Jeanneretc 06:42, 14 June 2018 (EDT))
Thank you. If they are the same, what I did is good, and we do not need to do anything else. If they are different, we will have to separate them. --MartyD 10:58, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Translators

Hello,

When adding novels, you can add the translator during the initial submission and not wait for it to be approved so you can edit - in the "Title Note". :) Collections and other short fiction containers are different (you can add it there but it also needs to go into the individual stories) but for novels, the container and the text are a single record - so you can just add it directly :) Annie 14:48, 5 July 2018 (EDT)

oups ! sorry for that, thanks (Jeanneretc 22:23, 5 July 2018 (EDT))
It's not a problem - it is just easier (and less likely to miss it) :) Annie 22:38, 5 July 2018 (EDT)

Les légions dangereuses

Hi Cédric. Concerning your verified, I had to change the pub series to "Hélios - Fantasy", as we would have had different titles with the same series number. I will do the same (without further notifications on my part) to your other PVs that are in the same case. Moreover, wouldn't the correct title be Les légions dangereuses ou Si Quitiane m'était conté, as indicated by WorldCat and probably by title page ? Could you please check ? TIA, Linguist 04:59, 7 October 2019 (EDT).

no probleme for the change to Hélios - Fantasy, for the title though, I cannot find where the "si Quitiane m'était conté" comes from.
Never mind ! Thanks for checking, Linguist 05:11, 8 October 2019 (EDT).

Matricia et al.

Hello again. Do you confirm the 320 page count for this pub ? 320 is the total given by nooSFere, where page counts are usually in excess, including blank pages, ads, ToC, etc. WorldCat, often closer to the mark (usually gives the last written page number) indicates 286. Thanks, Linguist 04:48, 11 October 2019 (EDT).

Same thing for L'origine des victoires : WorldCat gives 225 (which could mean 226), as against 230 from nooSFere. Linguist 04:42, 13 October 2019 (EDT).
And again for Kallocaïne (WorldCat 237, nooSFere 240). Moreover, nooSfere states : « En pages intérieures, le titre du roman devient "Kallocaïne Roman du XXIe siècle" ». If this is correct, then the title of this pub should be updated. Linguist 04:52, 13 October 2019 (EDT).

Cover art credit

I have removed the cover art credit to "Atelier octobre rouge" from your verified record of Un tremplin pour l'utopie, and put it in the notes. We don't usually credit "workshops", "art studios" and such, but it is all right (although not compulsory) to mention it in the notes. Linguist 05:53, 13 October 2019 (EDT).

Translations

Just a few reminders for when you add translations

  • You do not need to add a series or series number. When the book gets varianted, it will get them from the original. If you add them and the series is different from the original one, it remains in place after the varianting and needs to be cleaned up manually
  • The translator needs to be added both in the publication notes and in the title notes. Doing it during that initial submissions saves an edit downstream :)

I did the changes for this one and did the variants for the cover and the novel while I was there. Thanks! Annie 15:06, 10 November 2019 (EST)
