Technology and Culture

Hello,

We have a somewhat special rules for adding non-genre magazines so a few changes were needed:

• We do not record the name of the editors - they can be added as notes but we use "Editors of magazine_name" as the editors.
• Marked is as non-genre.
• The OCLC record is for the complete magazine, not just for the issue so we add this as a note only.

Thank you for your help! How would I add this essay by Ursula K. Le Guin that contains short reviews of multiple SF books? Should it be a standalone essay, or would it be a review added to the various books' pages? Is the academic journal Science Fiction Studies considered non-genre? It will be genre and we have a few issues. The way to add this to add the magazine and inside of it add the essay as one entry and then add the reviews inside of the magazine. Hello,

Approved your submission but a few changes had to be made:

• We have a space for external IDs so moved the OCLC one there
• There should always be a note on sources.
• The story synopsis belong to the story, not to the collection. In such cases, wait for the approval before adding it to the story.
• As you are not adding the complete contents, I added the template to indicate that.
• As the only source is OCLC and it lists the story under the shorter name, this is what we use. If you have a better source, add to the publication note and adjust the title.

Electric Literature No. 5

So is this an anthology or a magazine? If it is a magazine, then we don't record the number inside of the series; if it is an anthology, then the authors need to be either the actual editors or uncredited if they are not credited (the Editors of is only for magazines and fanzines). Electric Literature describes itself as a quarterly journal on its About page, so I think that's the easiest description for it. The journal issues appear to be released in book form, so it's a little confusing; I don't know what format would work best for ISFDB. Morebooks

Priests of Progress

You added the author of this in the big omnibus you had been working on as G. Colmore [pseud, of Gertrude Renton Weaver]. Is that how it is credited in the book or were you trying to recreate what ISFDB shows for pseudonyms? If the latter, then it is not how it works and I will be happy to explain how it works and fix that (and then you will know how to deal with it next time). If it is credited like that, is it a comma and not a dot after pseud? And we will need a note on the title level explaining that indeed, it is how it is credited (and then the relationship will need to be fixed as well. Thanks! :) Annie 14:16, 12 March 2021 (EST)

The "omnibus" that I'm working on is actually a collection of microfiche slides; I don't know how G. Colmore is credited in the actual microfiche copy of the book, but "G. Colmore [pseud, of Gertrude Renton Weaver]" IS how it's credited in the print (paper) guide to the microfiche that I'm now working from. Here's a screenshot of that page from the bibliography: link. I changed the name to match the G. Colmore credit on ISFDB, but now I'm not sure that was correct to do. I'm also not sure how much I should be using the print microfiche guide as a credit source, because it contains multiple apparent errors/typos: for example, repeatedly spelling Anonymous as "Anonynmous." Just add a note in the publication record explaining where the credits are coming from and that obvious comments on the names are skipped (give that one as an example) and note the ones you are fixing - like the misspelling of Anonymous.. I would not add the stuff in the square brackets - it seems like something a guide will do. Secondary sources have varying quality. As long as we document what we do, we are good. If someone gets their hands on the Microfiches one day, they can fix whatever differs. Annie 06:15, 13 March 2021 (EST)

I Refuse to Be a Supporting Character

Thanks for submitting I Refuse to Be a Supporting Character: Volume 1! I have approved the submission and made the following changes:

• Changed the title from "I Refuse To Be a Supporting Character (Light Novel) Vol. 1 " to "I Refuse to Be a Supporting Character: Volume 1" to match what's stated on the title page of the book.
• Changed the capitalization of "To" to "to" as per Template:PublicationFields:Title, which says:
  • all later words are capitalized except for "a", "an", "and", "at", "by", "for", "from", "in", "of", "on", "or", "the", "to", and "with"

Since we don't seem to know the spelling of the author's name or of the original Chinese title, I am going to ask on the Community Portal to see if any of our editors may be able to figure it out based on what's displayed on the publisher's Web page. Ahasuerus 17:13, 21 June 2021 (EDT)

Thanks. The original Chinese title is 穿成女主闺蜜怎么办 by author pen name 姜离远; copied from NovelUpdates. NovelUpdates contains translated & original titles & author names for many Asian novels, but it may be a questionable source to link from ISFDB because NovelUpdates usually links directly to (usually unauthorized) fan translations. Links to Amazon book pages

When submitting a new publication, if you've already included the ISBN or an Amazon ASIN in the appropriate fields, there's no need to include a link in the Webpage field to the Amazon page for the work as ISFDB will automatically make links to Amazon. Linking permissions for external links to cover images, and book titles

I noticed a couple other items on your submission for Book of Thunder:

1. When including a URL for the cover image, we can only use URLs for sites that have given permission. You can see more about this here: ISFDB:Image linking permissions.
2. When a book is in a series, please do not include the series name and volume number in the title of the book (unless the book has no other title). In this case, you had the title as "Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits: Book of Thunder (Vol. 1)". I fixed it to simply "Book of Thunder" since the title was already part of the series and the series volume number had also bee added tot he title.

Heaven Official's Blessing: Tian Guan Ci Fu Vol. 1

A few questions and notes about this one:

• Is the Cover artist really credited under the Chinese name?
• Technically this one is not eligible to be added yet. I will not delete it (so you do not need to redo it in a few weeks) but it should have been rejected when you attempted to add it - anything more than 90 days in the future is not eligible and in my experience, anything between 60 and 90 days can still move around (even from established publishers).
• When changing the date as you just did, you need to change both the date of the publication and the one of the title - once created, they are independent. I fixed the pub date for you but for the future, it is easier to change both via EditPub :)

• Removed series title, updated title to conform to capitalization rules, removed extraneous text "Landolt-Ring Aerosol" as I couldn't figure out where that came from. Is it on the copyright page perhaps, and if so, please provide source in the notes. Updated Contents titles accordingly.
• Publisher changed from Del Rey Books to just Del Rey - for publishers we do not record as in the book - instead, we try to standardize on well-known names, hence just Del Rey
• Added the .com to Amazon since you must exactly which Amazon you got the data from, as the info can be different dependent on which one you choose
• Updated synopsis of title record per the previous message.

1)"Landolt-Ring Aerosol" comes from the English book title page & copyright page, visible online here.

2)I don't mind the uniform capitalization rule if it's required, but I should note that the title for the xxxHOLiC novel (and the xxxHOLiC manga series it's based on) is officially stylized with that odd capitalization as xxxHOLiC or ×××ＨＯＬｉＣ in every official English and Japanese source: see here, here, and here. I've seen other websites use "xxxHolic" as a compromise, since the xxx is technically meant to be silent (the title is allegedly supposed to be pronounced "Holic").

3)xxxHOLiC needs to be properly part of / beginning of the book title; the book is not listed as just "AnotherHOLIC" in any source I have. Or xxxHOLiC needs to be listed as the novel's series name, but the novel will be listed on ISFDB as the only series volume, because the rest of the series (last time I checked) are all manga/graphic novels. • I've re-added the series title, as it is not against the rules strictly speaking (rather, it's a consensus not to add series titles to the title proper)

Translations

When adding a new translation, add the book first. Then connect the variant. When you try to create the variant first, it may be deleted overnight IF you are not fast enough to add a book to it. :) Plus you end up needing to store Amazon links on the title level (where they do not belong) - instead the ISBN needs to be added to the book and Amazon Japan cited as a source. Ai No Kusabi: The Space Between Vol. 2: Destiny

A few things on this one:

• When adding books from 2008, we want the ISBN-13 unless only the ISBN-10 is printed in the book.
• When adding a book which you are not verifying (aka working from the book itself), a note on the sources is mandatory.
• When the novel has its own title (as opposed to being just "Ai No Kusabi: The Space Between Vol. 2" for example), we use simplified titles - without the series name.
• When copying a synopsis from somewhere, the source and the date need to be added. See how I did that here.

• Speculative fiction webzines, which are defined as online periodicals with distinct issues (note: online periodicals without distinct issues are not considered webzines)
• Special speculative fiction issues of non-genre webzines
• One time speculative fiction anthologies published on the Web
• published by a market which makes the author eligible for SFWA membership
• shortlisted for a major award

As this is a non-genre webzine, it is not eligible. If you would like to reopen the discussion to allow "Genre stories in non-genre webzines", you can do it here. ISBNs and Breve eternidad

Hi. I accepted your Breve eternidad submission, but I changed the ISBN from an ISBN-13 to an ISBN-10. ISBN-13s were not assigned until 2007, so it is extremely unlikely that anything published before 2005 or so would have an ISBN-13 printed on it. Open Library, Library of Congress, and WorldCat all have it with the ISBN-10.

While I was researching, I added a couple of other details, got the cover from comunidades.com.mx, and added the contents as well. If you have any knowledge of this author or this collection, please review. Thanks. --MartyD 09:30, 26 September 2021 (EDT)

The Bird That Drinks Tears

A few small changes:

• 2003 is too early for ISBN13 so I replaced it with ISBN10
• A question - yes24 has the date for this specific edition as 2003-01-18. I am not sure how reliable it is for an almost 18 years old books so I will leave it to you to decide if we want that in the record.
• If you remember to, we need a transliteration of the titles which are not using the Latin script. Not sure if you read enough Korean for that but if you do, adding them to the titles, author, publisher and series will be great.
• The links on the publication page are really about the whole series so I moved them up there. Feel free to add any novel-specific links if any are available somewhere.

I originally got the ISBN and 2003 date from the Korean WP series entry but wasn't sure whether Wikipedia(s) counted as a source, so I searched for the ISBN on other sites. I know Yes24 is a popular online bookstore but have no idea how what their accuracy is on specific days for release dates. Oops, now that I'm actually looking at your result page, it looks like I mistakenly copy-pasted the series name into the novel name and vice versa. (unindent)Talking about Korean updates (welcome to non-Latin languages editing, it is fun in here): The Directory name needs to be in Latin script. And for languages that tend to have two alphabets, adding a transliteration in the second one is also useful. So I added the Kanji transliteration to the Latin one here(that way searching for the name in Kanji will pick up the record) and fixed the directory name. Annie 17:18, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

A few things about this one:

• Transliterated is not translated. The field is for specifying how the Korean text will be rendered in Latin characters (on in another writing system). Translation of titles or transcriptions (how to read a word in the languages where things are really weird) go into the notes.
• Price format always starts with currency and we use thousands separators even in languages who do not use them. So 15800원 should be 원15,800

I added "Over the Choice" to the Transliterated field because that English title is listed with the Korean title on the book cover and title page and the Korean title "오버 더 초이스" appears to be a hangul transliteration of the English text (Obeo deo choiseu). I'm not sure where else to list the English title; changing the overall title to "오버 더 초이스 Over the Choice" seems to imply that the title is "Over the Choice Over the Choice." That is not unusual for translations and sometimes for native works which want to look more cosmopolitan and no, there is no such implication on the title - it just shows the title in two different languages. If both the English and the Korean text are on the page, you decide how to enter - either enter both in the title field or just the Korean text and an explanation in the notes field that the English is also there. It depends on what you consider the title on that page. But the transliteration field is strictly for transliterations and cannot be used for translations, transcriptions, subtitles or any other things printed in the book (or which you just want to add). Think of it as a system field - it is there to assist searches and so on; it is not to data that is printed in the book. Annie 12:24, 30 September 2021 (EDT)

Spec fic in similar fashion that The Lovely Bones and The Invisible are specfic: a girl is murdered but lingers after death as a ghost to observe people in her life. See for example this GoodReads review summary. Also Common Sense Media tags it in their “Monsters, Ghosts and Vampires” topic.

When adding new books, there are two sections for links:

• Links about the specific edition you are adding go into the Publication Web links (the ones lower on the page)
• Links about the text itself go into the Title Web Links (the ones higher on the page)

Czech cover artists

Hello,

Unlike English, Czech is a strongly inflected language with multiple cases (7 to be exact). While authors of books are in the nominative, artists sometimes are not. So when the illustrator/cover artist is Jana Šouflová, she will be credited as Jany Šouflové in a sentence -- "od Jany Šouflové" means "by Jana Šouflová". Same applies for translators and anyone else (including the author) if their name is led by a preposition. When adding the name to our DB, we want the non-inflected name because it is the name of the person (the inflected forms are just the way to use them in a sentence). I fixed a few of the recent books - but please keep that in mind. Not sure how strong your Czech is - so if you know that and just forgot - this is just a reminder. Karmic Consultants

Apparently the re-releases of Karmic Consultants are reordering the books - "A Cop and a Feel" is now #3 (under the title "A Little Night Magic") while it was #5 in the Samhain editions, "Demon Hunting for Beginners" is now #5 while it used to be #3 as "The Sexorcist". We have two options here:

• Keep the original order and explain the new order in the notes of the series.
• Change the order to the new one and explain the OLD one in the notes.

What would you like to do? Also - no need to add series name and number when you will be varianting (or if you do, they need to match or we will need to manually clean them) and I added the price and the cover for this one and moved the page numbers to the notes - for ebooks we do not use the Pages field. I think changing the series order to the new order makes the most sense in light of this note on author Vivi Andrews's website: "Long time readers may notice new titles, new covers, and a couple changes to the recommended series order in the Karmic Consultants and Lone Pine Pride series. Due to circumstances beyond my control, those series were originally published out of the order in which they were written. The new order is as they were originally intended, but each book can still be read as a stand alone." Fauna

Just heads up for a couple of small changes:

• Canadian dollars are recorded as C$12.95 (with the correct number of course) regardless of how the site or book credits them (we always normalize prices).
• When the order of stories is known, it is a good idea to order them explicitly. If we do not know the pages, we use piped numbers (and we always use piped numbers for ebooks). The site sorts based on the number after the | so if you mix piped and unpiped pages, keep that in mind (so (|1, 10, |3, |12) will get sorted as |1, |3, 10,|12). More information on sorting here. That way if an ID moves around later due to a merge or someone removing/restoring titles by mistake or if we ever change the default order we use inside of a publication, the order will survive. I did that here.
• When using online sources, I like to date my notes ("Data from Amazon.com as of 2021-10-19" for example). That way it is clear when we pulled the data and one does not need to dig through the history to try to figure that out in 5 years when the book is nowhere to be seen in its sources. Just an idea. :)

Is[1] "Love in the Time of Poltergeists" a variant of "The Ghost Shrink, the Accidental Gigolo & the Poltergeist Accountant" if so than the novel will have to be turned int a chapbook and a shortfiction title added. A template issue

Setting flags

Hello,

When you are setting one of the 4 flags (non-genre, graphic, juvenile, novelization), it needs to be set to all variants to the title as well. For example here, there is a translation. When you set the jvn on the English one, you should have also submitted the edit to set it on the Dutch one as well (it does not happen automatically as the titles already exist and we do not cascade-update). I Adopted a Villainous Dad I

A few things about this one:

• The title on the title page is "I Adopted a Villainous Dad I" and not "I Adopted a Villainous Dad Vol. 1"
• No page numbers for ebooks - these go into the Notes :)
• Added the second Goddreads (ever since Amazon stopped connecting ASINs and eISBNs, they are very likely to have two separate records even when there is a single book really that is just available in multiple formats as here)
• When adding covers we want the ones in the /I/ space (not ASIN/ISBN based). The /P/ covers as the one you added is just a pointer and if Amazon ever decides to change the cover for this ASIN, it will change our image as well (and as mistakes happen, we may end up with a cover for a German dictionary for example). So just pick up the /I/ links instead of the /P/ ones.

That Untravelled World

Just a reminder that we have an import function - when you just add stories, they create new records and require manual merge. I also cleared the subtitle (we do not record "A Novel" and similar subtitles) and added the missing story (noting that it is unclear which of the two Reunion stories it is). In addition, incomplete goes into the pub notes, not the title notes when needed. The end result is here. Nope, no idea. I just added a new entry for it and added a note inside of it (see here) that it is unclear which one it is :) If someone ever figures out which one it is, we will merge it where it belongs. The point for the incomplete was that it was in the wrong notes :)

You cannot import when creating the new one - it is always a subsequent step. You either edit/create a publication or import into it. Open any publication. Look on the left menu - the Import menu is there and when you click on it, the help page’s link is at the top of it. In this case, you would have created an empty book and when approved, imported the stories. The Help page (in a handy link - that’s the same thing which is linked at the top of the screen). Russian/Ukrainian names and Wikipedia

When copying names from Wikipedia for Russian/Ukrainian names (and other Cyrillic ones), don't forget to remove the stresses from the names - they are added there to assist non-native speakers but they are never used in actual credits. I fixed it here. Also

• The Legal name is "Last, First Middle"
• The ex-USSR in Birth date will be "Ukraine/Russia/Belarus/so on, USSR" and not "Soviet X". More details here (the example is for Russia but it applies for everyone).

Конотопська відьма

Can you share the source that shows a 1833 publication for this one. The Ukrainian Wikipedia and FantLab agree on it being written in 1833 but published in 1837 and not as an individual book but as part of a collection (although they disagree on the name of the collection). You are also mentioning OCLC but you did not add an ID and I cannot find the book in Worldcat. With all that, I have a suspicion that this 1833 book exists really and that the author is credited with his full name for that book so can you share some more details?

We are publication based - we record books, not titles. So if this was never published in that form, we won't have a publication like that and we date based on publication and not based on writing. Am I missing an edition somewhere? Thanks! Annie 15:43, 2 March 2022 (EST)

Every Google Books reference that I can find indicates that the text was written in 1833 and published in 1837. One book seems to suggest that an official censor authorized publication in 1833, but it's "snippet view", so I can't access the details. Ahasuerus 18:48, 2 March 2022 (EST)

I have found a better source at Google Books: "Григорій Квітка-Основьіаненко: життя і творчість", a biography by Oleksiĭ Ivanovych Honchar (1969, page 23):

• In 1833-1834, censors approved three of his prose works, which were included in the second collection of "Little Russian Tales" ("Конотопська відьма" ["The Witch of Konotop"], "Добре роби, добре й буде", "От тобі й скарб"). The book was published in 1837.

Is this book predominantly genre? It does not appear to be in which case:

• The Anthology title should be marked as non-genre.
• The incomplete template is for books where more eligible titles still need to be added. For non-genre works where we just list the stories which are genre, "Only known genre contents listed" or something along these lines should be used instead (or you can omit that if you prefer - as long as the book is marked as non-genre).

The problem with incomplete is that it says that there is at least one additional story missing :) So we don't use it for non-genre books/magazines usually. It can stay IF you also add a note explaining that this is because of these two authors' stories. As long as someone finding it listed on the cleanup report can see why it was added and don't end up adding the whole contents because this is how you usually solve these, that's ok. Céza Kassem

For the DB Céza Kassem and Ceza Kassem are the same name so whichever gets created first wins no matter what you write in the field of a publication or a title. However, which ones wins can be changed by a moderator on the Author level. So when you have one of those, post on the Moderator board and someone will fix it. If the other form is ever used, notes are required to explain that (so when one day we can differentiate, we can split them). As all titles use Céza Kassem, I fixed it in the author record. Bi Dyke Energy vs Azure

I've effectively reversed the edits you made to change the author's name of Blue Neustifter's Hugo nominated story "Unknown Number" from "Bi Dyke Energy" to "Azure". When I originally entered this story, I had gone to some pains to find the original Twitter thread where is was published. The only name appearing on that thread was "Bi Dyke Energy". I also noted that no title was given to the thread and thus gave it the title "untitled" to indicate it was published without title. It is our policy here to reflect the author as they are credited, usually on the title page. In this case the story was only published as by "Bi Dyke Energy", which is how we need to reflect it here. I did also note the Blue Neustifter as the author's legal name. If the story is ever reprinted with the author credited as "Azure" we could add that as a variant. A few things about this one:

• When the synopsis is copied from somewhere, the source needs to be mentioned (you are usually good about that so I suspect you just missed it)
• Look Inside clearly showed an ISBN for the ebook, different from the one for the paperback so I added that (Amazon never shows ISBNs for ebooks in the product listings so it is always a good idea to check Look Inside, the author's site and Kobo to see if the ebook has an ISBN by any chance)
• Etubi Onucheyo is credited for cover design only, not for cover art. We do not record the designers as artists in the DB - they are only noted in the notes.

And a few things on this one:

• Series names are not recorded as part of the title (as long as the book has its own title). See the help page, specifically "Note that the title page may show the series name, and sometimes the publication's position in the series. The present (2018) usage is to enter only the "simplified" title, for example, you could enter the title for a publication as "Song of the Dragon" and the note would have "The title page states 'Song of the' over 'Dragon' over 'The annals of Drakis: Book One'.""
• I swapped the cover for an /I/ image. When adding Amazon covers, make sure you get an URL from the /images/I/ space and not from the /images/P/ space. The /P/ covers are tied to the ASIN of the book so if there is a new edition reusing the ASIN/ISBN, Amazon will replace the /P/ image with a link to the new cover. The /I/ covers are never changed - Amazon just repoints the /P/ covers to a different /I/ cover when they change the cover.

What are your sources for the date changes here and here? Any change like that needs to have a note attached to it: either a proper note explaining the date provenance OR a moderator note explaining that you are adding an earlier edition (and the submission for this earlier edition should be in the queue as soon as possible -- otherwise a Note in the Notes field is mandatory). The paperback formats

The official rule is "For books as tall as 7.25" (19 cm) or as wide/deep as 4.5" (11.5 cm) use "tp"." (more details here). That means that Secret Land of the Past which is 5.25 x 7.75 inches should be entered as "tp", not "pb". That's pretty common for children books - they are very rarely "pb" - this one is a bit over in both directions but even if it was 7 inches tall, it still will be a tp because of its width. Thanks! Just a quick note to remind you that the title note of a magazine becomes the note for the yearly record for that magazine so notes about that specific issue go into the publication notes. Also don't forget to add the series to a magazine - the title of the magazine, minus the issue identifier. Based on the data I linked to from Drama Online Library, I Have Loved Strangers and The Small both sound speculative. 10 Out Of 12 is unclear so I left it out. I'm going to change Mr. Burns (US) to a variant of Mr Burns (UK); Wikipedia implies that Samuel French published a US edition first but I can't find a listing for it. Cover Image Uploads

When using the "Upload new cover scan" option from a publication page, the software will automatically add an licensing template pre-populated with the publication information. In this case, you do not need to select a license under the "Licensing" pull down on the upload page (as it creates adds a second, incomplete template that needs to be cleaned up). I approved your addition of Yenne Velt: The Great Works of Jewish Fantasy and Occult, Volume I but made a number of changes.

• I removed the series. If/when you add volume II, we will create an omnibus containing the two volumes which make up the box set.
• Added spaces in several author's name per help - "Initials should normally be entered followed by a period and a space as "Gordon R. Dickson" or "K. D. Wentworth", even if the period or space is omitted in the publication."
• All the titles existed in the db. Creating the container title then importing the contents would have been much simpler and cleaner. I went ahead and merged all the content titles for you.
• Anonymous was changed to uncredited. We only use anonymous if that is how the work is credited.

Yes, this Korean web series was first published as a serialized webnovel, BUT I have no proof that this and other such Korean webnovels were published in online venues that meet ISFDB inclusion standards. Therefore I have been adding the series by their Korean ebook publications with ISBNs, which do meet ISFDB inclusion standards. A counter-example showing what I mean is the Under the Oak Tree series, which has been serialized in Korean but published in book form only in English. So based on this discussion, the English translations of Under the Oak Tree are published as novels while the Korean webserial originals are listed as “unpublished.” Morebooks (talk) 03:18, 26 March 2023 (EDT)

Also the Korean webseries I’ve been adding to ISFDB are for the most part series available in official English translation through serial venues like Radish Fiction. I don’t have the actual book to check the credit; all my data to enter came from elem.mx and WorldCat and LTF, none of which list a comma for Taibo.
