The Exorcists of IF

Please take a look at this proposal and leave a comment. Stonecreek 16:51, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Due to danger of the proposal getting lost to memory and the response I changed the item to SHORTFICTION. Stonecreek 05:07, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Richard Matheson: He Is Legend

Hi. Could you check the spelling of Rathbun's first name on the above. You have it as Martk Rathbun. There is a Mark Rathbun who looks like is the same person. Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 22:09, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes, it's "Mark" and I'll submit a correction. Thanks.SFJuggler 22:16, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

"A Grossery of Limericks", by Asimov and Cialdi

Based on Amazon's "Look Inside", I added some content items to your verified collection of limericks. (To prevent the cleanup reports from making various complaints, I needed to refer to each of the collections of limericks as a single "Poem".) Chavey 21:35, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Whoever entered the collection Limericks listed the two forewords in your publication as "Poems", but I assumed that they were essays. Could you please check and see what they are? I'd like to combine those records, but can't do it without determining that type. Thanks, Chavey 21:47, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
They are essays although each one contains a poem at the end of it. I'll leave it up to you to determine if the included poems rate separate handling.SFJuggler 18:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Not unless they're actually listed. For example, there are lots of poems/songs embedded in "The Lord of the Rings", but we don't list them separately. Chavey 03:06, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Kate Daniels or Kate Daniel?

Can you confirm the credit for the essays on pages 45 and 46 of this record? A Google scan of the original edition credits Kate Daniel. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 20:32, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Should be "Daniel" without the final s.SFJuggler 15:10, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation of INTERIORART records

The two pieces by George M. Harris in this record should have been disambiguated by following the ISFDB standard: The first piece isn't disambiguated ever. The second piece, if it has an identical title and artist credit, is disambiguated by adding "[2]". This continues for each additional identically titled and credited work. Mhhutchins 18:51, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

Noted. I'll submit changes.SFJuggler 23:12, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

X-Men

Other than the page count (which is immaterial in a non-verified record), how is the record you want to add to this title different from the one already in the database? Mhhutchins 15:28, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

OK, I see now that it has a different ISBN. I'll accept it, but will change the publisher to "Del Rey / Ballantine", since that was the ISFDB designation of the publisher's name in 2000. (Unless your title page doesn't give Ballantine as the publisher?) Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:30, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

The ISBN...beat me to it!SFJuggler 15:31, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Diesel - Family name and legal name

I have made the following changes to the Diesel record:

  1. As per Help:Screen:AuthorData, The format of the legal name should be "Lastname, Firstname Middlenames", so in this case it's "LaForce, David S." rather than "David S. LaForce"
  2. As per the same page, the Family Name field should contain the only family name (surname) of the canonical name, so in this case it's "Diesel" rather than "LaForce"

Proposed variant for The Final Fear

Sorry, but what you had in mind wouldn't work, so I had to reject your varianting: You tried to variant for a publication, but it's only possible to variant titles (you would have created a new title with information for a specific publication in its notes). Please create a new publication (and automatically with it a new title) and then do the varianting. Thanks, Christian Stonecreek 04:29, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Okay.SFJuggler 04:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Laurance Janifer pseudonym of Laurence M. Janifer

When you create a variant title based on a change of author you must follow up by making the author of the variant into a pseudonym of the canonical author. You do not have to wait for the first submission to be moderated. Mhhutchins 07:01, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Okay. Looks like it's already been done.SFJuggler 15:13, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
I did it. The purpose of my posting was to make you aware so that you'd do it without having to be asked. It's better to have every editor aware of the database's structure rather than the few moderators. Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:04, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Some Metallic Robets

No, it's "Robots" and not the typo. Fix submitted. Thanks.SFJuggler 00:07, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

The Knight-Errant, the Dragon and the Maiden

Your verified Gahan Wilson's Cracked Cosmos contains The Knight-Errant, the Dragon and the Maiden. Previous versions of this story are The Knight-Errant, The Dragon, and The Maiden (with a comma after dragon). Would you mind double checking your title and either variant (if missing) or merge (if not missing) as appropriate? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:46, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Ace Fantasy

Hello, I've put your submission on hold regarding your change of publisher from "Ace Books" to "Ace Fantasy". There are, at this time, only 3 books by the latter publisher here (note that one of them has even clearly "Ace SF" on cover) so it seems to me that the publisher should stay as "Ace Books" (and that the others should be regularized). What are the thoughts of the PVs ? Hauck 10:12, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

I agree. If the change was put through I would be changing the other two books in the series to "Ace Fantasy" as they are similarly marked. It would be easier and cleaner just to leave it as-is.SFJuggler 14:53, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Shirley's Cutter series

You should variant each of the title records on the summary page for John Cutter to John Shirley. Making a pseudonym and creating a variant are two different functions. Doing one doesn't automatically do the other. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:17, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Star Wreck screenplay

I changed the type of this publication from NOVEL to CHAPBOOK, and added a SHORTFICTION content record for the screenplay. I also removed the series number. You'd given it "1" and there's already a title with that number in the series. You also mention that you planned on creating a variant. Don't. A screenplay shouldn't be varianted to a novel. Variants should only be made if the works are basically the same work, only with a change in title or author credit. Mhhutchins 01:22, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

The End and the Beginning

Can you confirm the publisher credit given in this record? Both of the sources you cite in the Note field give the publisher as "HarperEntertainment". Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 22:19, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

I'll see if I can find the box that it's in. I'll update the entry if I can find it. My records (and most of the booksellers on ABE) list it as HarperPaperbacks.SFJuggler 15:49, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Yet, the two sources to which you link in the record's Note field do not. Hmmm. Guess who I think is more reliable, the Library of Congress and WorldCat or a group of dealers who piggyback off the bad data supplied to them by Amazon? I'll leave the record be until you're able to find your copy, or you can use your own initiative to correct it, or not. Mhhutchins 19:45, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Re this book. I also have the hardback copy and the entry makes reference to interior art. Can't find any interior art in my copy whatsoever. Note that my copy was originally one of the unnumbered/unsigned versions. I sent it to Roger Robinson who inscribed it for me and sent it back. --Mavmaramis 20:16, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

I don't have access to my copy at the moment. I'll have to dig it out and look. I don't remember it being much of an illustration, though.SFJuggler 04:28, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
Having had a second thought I wonder if it refers to the illustration on the title page. The phrase "interior art" is perhaps somewhat misleading in this case. Not that I'm going to make a big issue out of it at the end of the day so take your time. Thanks. --Mavmaramis 17:27, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Ten Thousand Light Years from Home

Just wanted to add my 2p worth on the cover art of this book. The ship on the right is more in the style of Tony Roberts - he tends to do ships with those 'flecks' and althougn I can see why you might think Foss due to the hull patterning, Roberts tended to use browns, oranges and blacks for his ships - take a quick skim through this list and you get the idea. I'm append his name to the note only. --Mavmaramis 19:09, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning that way now. I had never noticed Roberts before. It would still be nice to know for certain, though.SFJuggler 02:25, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
I agree. It'd extremely irritating. I think the thing with any of these artists is to get your eye in to their style although admitedly it'n not foolproof. --Mavmaramis 07:48, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

The Queen of Springtime by Silverberg

I've been exchanging emails with Nicholas Rodgers and he admits that he did the Gollancz cover for At Winters End by Silverberg but that The Queen of Springtime isn't one of his, even though he is credited on the jacket flap.

Never mind. His name is painted on the cover as "NICK". His memory must be failing!

Asimov's The Complete Robot

There's a problem with the publication date given in this record. If this is the first trade edition, with a printing date of February 1982, it's hard to believe that it sat in the warehouse for two years before copies were released. Also, the book club edition appeared in July 1982. Please confirm the secondary source for the publication date. (Amazon says it was published in March 1982.) Thanks for checking. "Familyname" field

This field is used to sort authors in the database author directory. It should be the last name of the author's canonical name. In the case of C. Djang, it should be "Djang" and not "Zhang" which is the transliterated form of the author's last name. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:07, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Turns out that the book was first published with the full name, so I made Chu Djang into the canonical name. So I transferred all of the author data over to that name. Mhhutchins 02:24, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Far Eastern Government and Politics: China and Japan

By making the second edition into a variant of the first, an error is created because of the different author credit. So I unvarianted it to have its own title record. Mhhutchins 02:09, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Research has shown that the record for the first edition was miscredited. According to OCLC, it should be credited to Linebarger, Djang, and Burks. I'll make the correct and return the variant. Mhhutchins 02:16, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

I accepted the submission, but what was your source that the first edition was credited to "C. Djang"? According to the OCLC record it was credited to "Djang Chu". Mhhutchins 02:30, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Even your source (LCCN) gives the author as "Djang Chu". Mhhutchins 02:32, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Both editions are credited the same in the Library of Congress listings but I typoed. I'm thinking that the second edition will have to be changed, also. I've checked my copy and it's credited to "Paul M. A. Linebarger, C. Djang and Ardath Burks" on the cover but to "Paul M. A. Linebarger, Djang Chu and Ardath W. Burks" on the title page. I'll submit the change for both editions.SFJuggler 02:41, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

With the Knight Male

Your verified Space Suits contains With the Knight Male which you have dated as 2000 and listed as a shortstory. The 2000 original story is given as a novelette (which matches Locus' categorization). If your version doesn't appear to be abridged, then these two should be merged as a novelette. If it has been abridged, then a note should be added to the title record and the date changed to match your publication. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:12, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Re this title: Series data is not usually given in the title field of the title record. According to the OCLC record for the paperback, this subtitle isn't used. Also, this synopsis is way too long. Please try to synopsize the synopsis. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 05:14, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

I changed the synopsis to just the tagline. I think that's enough. As for the (sub)title, it appears that way on the title page, the LOC listing and the copyright page. If you want to remove the subtitle I won't quibble about it.SFJuggler 05:39, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not saying you should remove it from your verified publication record. I'm talking about the title field of the title record (the canonical title). You had added it, and the subtitle doesn't appear on all publications of the title, which means it should be removed. I'll do it. Mhhutchins|talk 07:28, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
I have to take that back. A Google Books scan shows it also appears on the title page of the paperback edition, so OCLC was wrong. Mhhutchins|talk 07:33, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

I've added interior art records to the unsigned first edition of Dan Simmons's Prayers to Broken Stones that you might wish to incorporate in your verified record for the signed edition. The Everything Box

Concerning this publication record: The ISFDB policy about creating records for forthcoming publications is to stay within a three-month time frame. There are so many factors in the publishing industry that could change any of the data you've given here. I will change the publication date to 9999 which is displayed as "forthcoming", and places the publication onto a clean-up script which I monitor. As the scheduled date approaches, I will check the record periodically to see if any of the data has changed. Please keep this in mind for future reference. Hello, I've put your submission to update this pub because your long entered list of artists will create three new authors (of which two are corporations). I suppose that each one has contributed a minute part of the cover. Are you sure it's worth the trouble? (In such case, I tend to give such data in the notes and left the cover globally uncredited). Thanks for your input. Hauck 07:43, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Not worth it, I guess. If you can kill the artist info and accept the rest I'll change the entry and put the complete info in the notes.SFJuggler 02:11, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

bp

Re this publication: "bp" means the content appears on an unnumbered page that precedes pagination, although generally you can derive the page number and enter it in brackets. So by itself it shouldn't be in brackets. Only regular numbers go in brackets, i.e. an unnumbered page which appears in a range of unnumbered pages. To determine what number goes in those brackets, start with the first unnumbered page and go forward until you've reached the content for which you've created a record. Then you should add that range of numbers to the page count field. For example, the frontispiece appears on the fifth unnumbered page, then "[5]" should go in the page field of the content, and the page count field would be "[5]+264". Or you can enter "bp" in the content field and do nothing else. Mhhutchins|talk 01:18, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

The Planet of the Apes Chronicles

Re this publication: Can you confirm that there are three different interviews with Paul Dehn, and not just a continuation of a single interview, and that one of the interviews is conducted by "Peter Nichols" unlike the other two which are credited to "Peter Nicolson". Also, since most of the interviews in this publication are not of persons who are in the spec-fic field, they should have been entered as ESSAY instead of INTERVIEW. (You see that it creates odd "author" summary pages like this, this, and this.) I personally don't believe this publication qualifies for eligibility, since it's almost entirely about the film and not the novel. But I'm not going to push that point. Mhhutchins|talk 18:32, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

Cannot confirm this right at the moment as the book has been cycled back into storage. It might be easier to actually remove the book from the database since it's questionable.SFJuggler 17:38, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Wells' Food of the Gods

I was correcting the title of a printing of Wells' The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth which we mistakenly had as simply "The Food of the Gods" and I noticed that we had several publication records with the longer title in the publication records, but with the shorter title in the associated title record. I fixed the ones that weren't verified which leaves only this publication, which you have verified, with a mismatched title. I didn't want to move it to the correct title record without your assent. Let me know if you're OK with my moving it. Of course, you can move it yourself if you'd prefer. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:13, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

I happened to run across this myself and went ahead and changed it. Only saw this note when I came here to let SFJuggler know. This is a straightforward case. Container titles are generally supposed to match publication titles. Since the publication title is The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth, then that should be the container title and not a variant of that title. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:23, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

"2001: A Space Odyssey", cover art

In your verified edition of this book is a note, presumably from you, saying "Cover art not credited. Verified from "Art of Robert McCall." Presumably, that applies to the front cover (only?). Escape from Kathmandu / Two Views of a Cave Painting & The Idol's Eye

Since the title of this places the Robinson work first (arbitrarily) I've set the page numbering to list the Robinson first, so it is now 75+[4]+16+22 rather than [4]+16+22+75. Credo for Fantasy Writers by Robert Bloch

Hi. In your verified The Eighth Stage of Fandom: Selections From 25 Years of Fan Writing on p.22 for the Robert Bloch "Credo for Fantasy Writers", I've entered an identically titled work in The Pulpster #15. I was wondering if the two are the same and should be merged. It's 2 pages long and starts with "The following oath is recommended to be administered to all professional writers of weird or science fiction by the editor who purchases their first story. It goes on to list 34 humorous bits of advice, all numbered. Could you check and see if they are the same? Thanks. Doug / Vornoff 02:51, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

I'll put it on the list of things to look for. I'm out of town for a week starting on the 13th and I'll have to try to dig out the book after I get back. It looks like the pb credit is wrong. There is a signature (bottom left) that matches other Swanland pictures. Of the other covers in the series, only one has a visible signature that looks like a D, maybe an H. Replacing Cover Scans

When you upload a new cover scan on the wiki, there is no need to edit the pub. A null edit doesn't do anything. If the cover scan doesn't appear to change, you need to either force a page refresh (usually <F5>) or clear the browser cache. Our version of wiki software doesn't always tell the browser a new version is present and it will keep using the cached version. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 01:41, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Incorrect LCCN on verified pub note?

Hi, I recently fixed the note links in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future, Volume X and I noticed the original notes said LCCN 84-73270 was listed on the copyright page but failed to work in the LoC catalog. That is not true. Old LCCNs written with a hyphen like that need to be zero padded so I updated the note and made the correct LCCN link (along with fixing the old BLIC link to link into the British Library correctly). That said, the note also mentions "LCCN 2013207527 (from LOC lookup)", however that seems to be associated with different content (it seems to represent the series or at least the series since Galaxy Press started publishing it). Could you check that and consider removing it if it is not appropriate. Thank you, Uzume 20:56, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

I realize that you have to zero-pad the old LCCNs to find them. The "84-73270" was listed as a bad LCCN because the LOC entry explicitly lists it as invalid. The new LCCN was used because the LOC considers the series a periodical (it has an assigned ISSN to link the entire series). I would stand by the initial entry. On another note, thanks for the BLIC fix. I haven't been able to start the project of going back on all my edits to convert the links to the new templates. That's one less I have to do!SFJuggler 04:58, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

A batch of nongenre stories - if you disagree please comment

Currently there are numerous non-genre horror stories that are in the database because it's natural to just enter a book of horror or "tales of terror" without figuring out which stories are supernatural. I don't intend to systematically hunt for them, but when I spot one, I like to mark it nongenre. (In the case of classic stories, marking is better than removing it from the database because it'll just get re-added with some new anthology.) At the moment, I've spotted the following stories that I think need such a change, and I'm consulting people who have them in their verified pubs.

Firstly, there's Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (verified copies: (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)), which contains "A Terribly Strange Bed," "The Three Strangers," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Leiningen Versus the Ants," "A Rose for Emily," "Taboo," and undoubtedly other non-supernatural ones that I'm not noticing at the moment. Here are verified publications for those and some other stories:

Third Reich Victorious: Alternate Decisions of World War II

Hello, I'm not convinced that such a book (that seem to gather essays on alternate outcomes of WWII issues) is to be included in the db. We're here more in the field of (uchronic) historic studies like this book. Note that nearly all the authors are unknown to the ISFDB at present which is another hint of the non-genre status of the book (there are also not an ounce of fiction texts in it). What are your thoughts on the matter. Hauck 09:49, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Karel Čapek's R.U.R.

I'm in the process of correcting Karel Čapek's last name from Capek to Čapek. In nearly all cases we had his name incorrectly listed without the hachek over the C. I've gone ahead and changed the title record for the play R. U. R. which is included in your verified copy of Science Fiction Thinking Machines and your copy of The Arbor House Treasury of Science Fiction Masterpieces. Could you check your copies to see if how his name appears in the books. If it is Čapek, then nothing further needs to be done. Otherwise, we need to swap the title in your book for this one. This also assumes that the translations in your copies are by Paul Selver alone. There is a different translation by Selver and Nigel Playfair as by Karel Čapek. If your copies have some other combination of translator, name and title, we may need to add a new title record. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 02:59, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

A Journey Through Time: Exploring the Universe With the Hubble Space Telescope

Hello, I'm not sure that this book meets our ROA as it's a NONFICTION title that is not about spec-fic. The usual problematic question is "Is Caidin above the threshold?" (Barbree is clearly below it). What are your thoughts on the matter? Hauck 05:59, 23 July 2017 (EDT)

Caidin is already in the database with more than 30 novels plus assorted non-fiction (including one with Barbree) so I think it fits but I'm not going to lose any sleep if it doesn't make it in.SFJuggler 12:48, 23 July 2017 (EDT)

Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire for Cadigan Story

I'm going to reject your edit to add the 1998 Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire nomination for Pat Cadigan's "The Boys in the Rain". The short fiction categories for that award can be given to either short fiction or collections of short fiction. On the award's website, they list the nomination for the "recueil" (collection). Thus the nomination is for Cadigan's collection and not for the story of the same title. I'll also point out that the awards for translated works should be linked to the translated title records. When that is the case, the parent title will still show the award. For example, the winner from 1998 in the same category is the Poppy Z. Brite story "Calcutta, seigneur des nerfs" which is where the award is linked. The parent title of that story still shows the award even though it is not linked to that parent title. The Night Is Large

Hi. You verified and probably entered 1996 hardcover The Night Is Large P633042. Amazon.com now provides for that work a "Look Inside!" the 1997 paperback format.

For me now, that Look Inside includes p.xiv, the end of the Illustrations list, but lacks p.xiii. Of the illustrations you note "only a few credited"; I wonder whether you entered all of the credited ones in the database (as I see you entered no others). A revised Note may clarify that.

Everything that was credited was entered. If you know of credits for other, please enter them. I'd be interested.SFJuggler 23:42, 29 September 2017 (EDT)

Is the frontispiece illustration "bp • The Edge of the World" credited to "S. S. Sime" as our record shows, not S. H. Sime? Judging by the paperback "Look Inside", S(idney) H Sime will be no surprise as the artist (compare 1899 story illus. by Sime)--and clearly signed "S H SIME").

The 1899 illustration on page 79 alone is clearly labeled "S H SIME". The other four are signed S. H. Sime plausibly, and the signature of engraver(?) is more prominent.
No signature is visible to me from the 1996/97 Look at Amazon. --P64 moments later
I did not go through the book page-by-page checking for signatures. Again, if you know, please enter them with my blessing. The more information, the better.SFJuggler 23:42, 29 September 2017 (EDT)

I don't know anything about the book, nor know that the frontispiece is by S(idney) H Sime. Simply I noticed "S. S. Sime" between "S. H." and "Sidney" when I searched for the former Name a few days ago [working on that 1899 magazine story], wondered whether "S. S." is genuine, and investigated as far as I could using only the database and the Amazon Look, where the reproduction looks plausibly Sime.

Some questions about Warrior. First, on a minor matter, could you check if the "o'" in the title of "Ford o' Kabul River" is printed uppercase or lowercase there? Since that particular preposition is not on the list of standardized prepositions, a moderator wants to put it in the database "as written."

Secondly, I am sure that that poem and "Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries" are non-genre and would like to mark them as such. Can you identify any other non-genre items in this anthology? --Vasha 15:57, 20 November 2017 (EST)

Thanks. Is there a help page for this? I have the other two issues for 2018 to enter. I think I also need to link the departments to their "series", is that right?SFJuggler 22:18, 29 April 2018 (EDT)
Magazine help is a bit scattered. Have a look at the links below. For departments, some people organize regular features into series. You can do that if you wish. If that has already been done with other issues, yes, it's best to follow the precedent and do the same with what appears in a newly-recorded issue.
One other common practice for high-frequency magazines is to make a single Title ("Editor") record to represent the year, then merge all of the year's individual issues under that one title (so you get a title record along the lines of "XYZ - 2017" and, say, 12 issues linked to it whose publication records show "XYZ, January 2017", "XYZ, February 2017", and so on.
I hope that is useful. If you need help, or find yourself wondering about anything, just ask. --MartyD 07:25, 30 April 2018 (EDT)

Adding an essay to the Expanded Universe TOC

Hi—you’re listed as a verifier for Heinlein’s Expanded Universe, so I think I’m supposed to notify you about this? There was an essay missing from the TOC for the original hardcover edition: “Spinoff,” on p. 500. I’ve now added that, though I think it’s awaiting moderation. I’m seeing that essay in both the 1980 hardcover (my copy says “First edition” on the cover) and the 1982 first mass-market paperback edition. Let me know if you need more info or have concerns. --Elysdir 19:00, 17 May 2018 (EDT)

PS: I wasn’t sure whether I need to do anything to get the essay’s appearance in the book listed on the essay’s Title page (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?119448), or whether it’ll automatically appear on the Title page if the TOC change is approved. Can you let me know if there’s more I need to do? Thanks, —Elysdir 19:05, 17 May 2018 (EDT)
Just chiming in after approving the addition: as you just added it to the publication as a new title, it was added as a separate record. I merged it with the rest of the Spinoff essays.
In cases like that, when you are adding a title we already have, you can do an import instead of publication edit - look at the left-hand menu inside of a publication. There is an "Import Content" menu. It will allow you to pass the ID of the title(s) you want imported. That way the merge would not have been needed. :) Thanks! Annie 19:16, 17 May 2018 (EDT)

Gerald Kersh

You may know Harlan Ellison has a site dedicated to Gerald Kersh, and it has a wealth of bibliographic detail (eg. here and here) which I would like to use to enhance our records. This would probably alter some of the detail in publications you have verified, eg. more accurate dates for The Secret Masters/The Great Wash and some of his collections. Also, given the great amount of genre short fiction we have for him, would you consider Kersh to be 'above the threshold' as I do? I would like to add the non-genre short stories that are included in his many collections, but I want to get other verifiers opinions first. Given his standing as a highly respected genre author I think our biblio page for him is lacking and ought to more resemble that of Kurt Vonnegut, who also has a large number of non-genre short stories listed. What do you think? PeteYoung 13:08, 3 June 2018 (EDT)

Further to this, I'm trying to untangle some incorrect Kersh records that we already have in the database, for instance Kersh's Lunatic's Broth is a variant of 'Busto Is a Ghost, Too Mean to Give Us a Fright!' according to Harlan Ellison's online Kersh bibliography. 'Lunatic's Broth' appears in your verified The Horrible Dummy and Other Stories as by "P. J. Gahagan", the pseudonym he used for the story's original appearance in Courier. My question is, do the three pseudonymous stories in the collection appear under the names P. J. Gahagan and Waldo Kellar, or do they appear without pseudonyms? Thanks for checking. PeteYoung 02:35, 5 June 2018 (EDT)
I consider Kersh as "above the threshold" and would include all of his stuff here. I don't have access to the collection right now (in storage) but I do not recall any of his pseudonyms appearing on TOCs in any of his collections that I have. They were usually just page numbers and titles. The British editions during and after the war (into the '50s) were rather sparse on bibliographic details, not even listing original appearances in most cases.SFJuggler 00:30, 6 June 2018 (EDT)
Thanks. I'll get on with adding the non-genre. I think records for Kersh's short fiction were created using Ellison's Kersh biblio, but they were not always done correctly, using pseudonyms that were very likely only used for their first magazine/newspaper appearances, and there are also typos and other idiosyncrasies in our database that seem to be copied directly. Can I take this as permission to upgrade your verified pubs? I'll let you know about everything I've done. Thanks again. PeteYoung 00:50, 6 June 2018 (EDT)
I've added the non-genre that appear in Neither Man Nor Dog to my ebook pub and, as I indicated, imported them to your verified pub. I've preserved the page numbers you had previously indexed for the genre stories, and used the pipe method to order the rest as they may appear in yours (I'm assuming the story order is the same). However this has resulted in an odd display for the stories on pages 1 and 10 – they're not grouped with the rest of the numbered titles. When you get a chance you may wish to add page numbers for these remaining non-genre stories. I've also removed the note referring to "Only SF stories are included in this record's contents." Thanks. PeteYoung 17:25, 9 June 2018 (EDT)
When I get access to the books again I will go back through them and complete the contents. Thanks!SFJuggler 23:05, 10 June 2018 (EDT)

About webzines and stories

Hello, As per our rules of acquisition, webzines are not eligible unless they are a SFWA membership eligible market or they are shortlisted for a major award. It does not matter how important the author is (Stephen King or John Doe), we cannot add them as the rules stand at the moment. Sooner or later we will probably need to change the rules but for now, I need to reject your submission. The only way for this story (and others) to show up anywhere is to add them to the notes of the author. If that blog/site/webzine has a nomination somewhere, that changes the story but I cannot find any proof of that. Sorry. Annie 23:28, 10 June 2018 (EDT)

"I have the book"

Hi, I've seen you submitting updates with, amongst other material, "I have the book" in the note field. Why don't you verify the book?--Dirk P Broer 21:10, 30 September 2018 (EDT)

I do verify them...after the submission has been accepted. This is just a courtesy note to the moderator that I'm taking the information from the book rather than some website. If it winds up in the note field rather than the notes to moderator then that's a error on my part.SFJuggler 23:44, 30 September 2018 (EDT)

The World I Left Behind (Me)

Hi, I added the Me to this (it seemed to be the right thing to do, judging by the cover and the enclosed title). Stonecreek 01:58, 6 October 2018 (EDT)

Hmmmm...how did I miss that? Thanks!SFJuggler 01:59, 6 October 2018 (EDT)
Things like that do happen to everyone of us: you think you have done one change, but actually missed out on it. Such is life, I suppose. Stonecreek 04:47, 6 October 2018 (EDT)

Sundance

I'm holding your addition of Sundance. Is this genre? The descriptions don't make it sound that way. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:54, 13 October 2018 (EDT)

Wasn't really sure about this one. It's not billed as genre but it's sort of an alternate history. Borderline. Your call.SFJuggler 16:27, 13 October 2018 (EDT)
Historical fiction routinely changes some historical facts. Since the only delta seems to be Sundance didn't die in Bolivia & that is already part of the historical legend, this would be historical fiction vs. alternate history. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:53, 13 October 2018 (EDT)

Astounding: John W. Campbell Memorial Anthology

re: our verified http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?3247, the ISBN recognized by ABE is 0-394-48167-4 (that is: the correct checksum digit at end should be "4", not "7" as printed on the book.) I will correct the ISFDB listing and add a Pub Note. Markwood 19:12, 21 October 2018 (EDT)

The Skin Palace

Hi. You verified the 1996 hardcover P674040 as from "The Mysterious Press". Does the title page state "The Mysterious Press" rather than "Mysterious Press". The cited library records show no definite article.

Anyway, we use Mysterious Press (no publisher Note, yet) for an imprint of Warner Books, mainly 20th century, and The Mysterious Press for the current Grove Atlantic imprint.

So your record should be changed, perhaps with another note item. If you say t.p. shows "The Mysterious Press", I will note that when I revise the current imprint/publisher Note. --Pwendt|talk 20:24, 26 October 2018 (EDT)

Sometime last month I did write that publisher Note for Mysterious Press (no definite article). Today I submitted a change of your reported publisher from "The Mysterious Press", which we use for the current Grove Atlantic imprint. --Pwendt|talk 21:38, 1 December 2018 (EST)

Where do You Get Thsoe Crazy Ideas?

In your verified The Best of Xero, is the "Thsoe" in Where do You Get Thsoe Crazy Ideas? a database typo or is it spelled that way in the pub? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:00, 29 December 2018 (EST)

Typo. I'll submit a correction. Thanks.SFJuggler 18:05, 29 December 2018 (EST)

F&SF Nov/Dec 2018

Based on my copy, I made some edits to F&SF Nov/Dec 2018: corrected author of 2 cartoons from Nick Harris to Nick Downes; added the Publisher's Note on p. 200. I also added disambiguators and series to titles, adjusted the titles of the cartoons to the format used in records for other issues of F&SF, and suchlike little tweaks. Finally, I removed the "Coming Attractions." It's true that Help:Screen:NewPub#Contents included with exceptions says that it's a judgement call whether or not to include coming attractions announcements in contents, but it seems to me that the ones in F&SF are too brief and low on substance to be the sort of article Help says to include. --Vasha (cazadora de tildes) 00:04, 30 December 2018 (EST)

Don't know where "Harris" came from. Thanks for the tweaks!SFJuggler 00:17, 30 December 2018 (EST)

Election Day 2084: Science Fiction Stories About the Future of Politics

I was looking at the Internet Archives's copy of Election Day 2084 and had a couple of questions regarding the record:

  • Page 57 has the story as by John W. Jakes. However, the scan shows John Jakes on the title page.
  • Page 154 has the story as by Robert A. Heinlein and Elma Wentz. However, the scan shows only Robert A. Heinlein on the title page. The intro paragraph does say 'originally published as by "Lyle Monroe and Elma Wentz"', but we go by the credit and that is Heinlein alone.

Would you mind double checking your version? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:16, 31 December 2018 (EST)

This book has gone back into storage so I can't get to it easily. I'm comfortable with your corrections. Do you want to make them or shall I?SFJuggler 14:09, 1 January 2019 (EST)

Test of Honor

Hi. Re your verified http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?183929, I've also verified and am going to 3 corrections to the contents (last page number is 473 not 470, the page number for "The Warrior's Apprentice" should be 211 not 209, and addition of the linking short story "Aftermaths" which is not currently in the record.) If your copy actually has the title page for "The Warrior's Apprentice" on page 209 instead of page 211, and/or if it actually omits "Aftermaths", then check the publisher (should be Nelson Doubleday) and printing code on page 472 (should be "R11".) If either is different, then check to see if your book is this 1995 edition http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?198153. If it's not that GuildAmerica edition, then you've got yet a 3rd variant of the title. Thanks. Markwood 15:51, 10 January 2019 (EST)

No, this is the Nelson Doubleday with the "R11" code as specified. Thanks for the corrections!SFJuggler 00:16, 19 January 2019 (EST)

The Ganymede Takeover (Severn, 1988)

Hi, you're the primary verifier for http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?40335 and you state "Cover: The Ganymede Takeover (1988) • by Patrick Mortemore" and "Cover artist credited on front flap of dustjacket." The cover is from Chris Foss, at least that's what he states on his page https://www.chrisfossart.com/2011/08/philip-k-dick/ (and it sure looks like Chris Foss, but I can't see his signature-logo). Can you re-check - and maybe add a flavour of doubt, if the books actually states Mortemore (and it wouldn't be the first book with completely wrong data)? Christoph 16:34, 16 February 2019 (EST)

That book is in storage and I don't have ready access to it at the moment. I was more inclined to think Foss also but went with the citation on the dustjacket. Go ahead and change it to Foss with a note. I'm thinking something happened like this: [7].SFJuggler 12:07, 17 February 2019 (EST)
I will, thanks. Gimme a day. - Btw, similar thing happened here (very top): [8] + there's more than one PKD edition where they got the author wrong (on the cover) --Christoph 12:17, 18 February 2019 (EST)

Dragons and Nightmares: 4 Short Novels

Hi Juggler, I've made a change to the Note for your verified pub Dragons and Nightmares: 4 Short Novels. I've had on hold for the last two weeks an edit by Elmsfan who wanted to entirely delete the second bullet point, with the reasoning (in the Note to Moderator) that "I have #161 in my hand and it is not signed and no indication that the 1,000 were signed - looking at copies for sale also shows most unsigned and those signed were done so personally NOT as part of Limited Edition release." My attempt at discussion on this editor's talk page drew no response, so after two weeks I'm rejecting the edit and instead adding a comment that the info in Chalker & Owings is disputed. Do let me know if you have an issue with this as PV. Cheers. PeteYoung 22:53, 24 February 2019 (EST)

I have #904 and it IS signed so maybe some of them slipped through without signatures. Always possible. The comment probably is the way to go since Chalker is no longer around to check with. I'd go with it.SFJuggler 23:52, 24 February 2019 (EST)
Pete left the same message on my talk page. I have copy #205 which is not signed. Nor does the colophon mention mention signed copies. I also have a later edition of Chalker & Owings (1998) which mentions the numbering, but nothing about signed copies. Is your copy signed on the colophon page, or a separate limitation page? Or might it have been signed after publication? In any case, and if you agree, I'm going to propose changing the note on the publication record to reference the later edition of Chalker & Owings and eliminate the word signed. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:04, 26 February 2019 (EST)
Ron, I think we should go with removing the word signed. I believe this one was signed afterwards. I remember going to one of his signings at a convention and I'll bet this is one of the books I brought.SFJuggler 17:23, 9 March 2019 (EST)

Groff Conklin's 'Science Fiction Adventures in Mutation'

Hi. Since you PV'd this book, hope you can help with a question about my copy, a re-bound ex-library book with no jacket. There's no statement of edition or printing on its copyright page. Do you know whether there's anything on the copyright page designating a first edition and/or 1st or later printing? I checked Cole, Currey, Tuck & Magill: no help. Thanks! Markwood 19:01, 13 April 2019 (EDT)

This one is in storage and I don't have ready access to it at the moment. But this was done by Vanguard Press. They typically had extremely sparse copyright pages and I don't remember ANY of their books indicating a first printing/edition.Jim 12:03, 20 April 2019 (EDT)

The Brontés Went to Woolworths

Since it is reviewed in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, March/April 2019, I assume The Brontés Went to Woolworths is speculative fiction but the descriptions on Amazon, et. al. don't indicate it. Since it is under the Curiosities column vs. the normal review column, would you please confirm the review treats it as genre and then I will add it? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:51, 20 April 2019 (EDT)

It seems to be a parody of a certain type of novel. The review states that the Brontés are called up in a seance and go shopping at Woolworths with their "twentieth-century soul sisters". For what that's worth...Jim 19:20, 20 April 2019 (EDT)

The Clockwork Dynasty

Hi, I'd like to add more info on origin artwork of cover of The Clockwork Dynasty, and clarify Michael J. Windsor is actually the cover designer, not (one of) the cover art artist(s). Can you agree? Thx MagicUnk 18:22, 7 May 2019 (EDT)

I obviously copied the wrong field from my database into the cover artist. I have Triff (photography); siloto (photography); josefauer (photography); Andrey Burmakin (photography); grafvision (typography); Rzt Moster (photography). If that matches your info then go ahead and submit it (or let me know and I can submit it, either way works for me). Thanks for the catch!Jim 23:23, 13 May 2019 (EDT)
Hi Jim, I've updated the notes accordingly & submitted for approval. I've left the cover art record in though. I'm impartial, so I'll leave it to you whether you want it removed or not. Regards, MagicUnk 15:04, 14 May 2019 (EDT)
I say remove it and put the correct information in! ;)Jim 01:13, 15 May 2019 (EDT)

Verification

Hi, you edit books and use the term PV1 in the notes -or state 'have book' in the notes to moderator, yet you do not verify them, why?--Dirk P Broer 20:02, 16 June 2019 (EDT)

They are verified afterwards. Check out Opal Deception which you just accepted.Jim 20:05, 16 June 2019 (EDT)
No, you not only enter new books that way, you edit existing books like that too.--Dirk P Broer 20:07, 16 June 2019 (EDT)
Personal quirk. I only verify after I've seen the information that was accepted and I feel comfortable with it. If it's isfdb protocol to verify before submitting an edit then I'll do it that way but I was unaware that there was a particular order. The "Have book" note is a courtesy note to the editor that I'm working from the book itself and not some website or other reference.Jim 20:17, 16 June 2019 (EDT)
If you edit a book that hasn't been verified and mention 'have book', than I personally wonder why you don't verify the book as well. See it as a courtesy to other Isfdb users: they know that someone ownes that book and can answer questions about it.--Dirk P Broer 22:27, 16 June 2019 (EDT)
I DO verify them. If you look at the stats page, as of last night I have primary verified 2,114 publications. I verified a few more just minutes ago. I just want to see what information I'm verifying first.Jim 00:03, 17 June 2019 (EDT)

The Death of Baldur

I'm holding an edit that would change The Death of Baldur to "The Death of Balder". Per Amazon Look Inside, "Balder" is the spelling used in the ToC. Would you please check your edition of Norse Mythology to see what it's title page has? I will also ping the other verifiers in case it changed between editions. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:51, 14 July 2019 (EDT)
