Welcome!

Hello, Tocchan, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!.--Dirk P Broer 03:14, 26 September 2018 (EDT)

Toshiya Kamei

Hi, I've put some of your submissions on hold. The main reason is the adding of Toshiya Kamei to the author field, while I have the idea that Toshiya Kamei is the translator. The translator is mentioned in the note field. He/she is only considered author when he/she is on the title page of the publication -as author. An other reason for putting submissions on hold is the publication format 'unknown'. A book is paperback (code pb, generally up to around 18 cm on the longest side), Trade paperback (code tp, bigger paperbacks) or hardcover (code hc, height not important). It is perhaps the hardest part of entering a piublication for a novice. Be sure to read our Field-by-field guide to creating and updating publication records!--Dirk P Broer 03:49, 26 September 2018 (EDT)

URLs for Amazon images

Hi, and a belated welcome! A quick note about Amazon's URLs for images: Amazon embeds sizing and other formatting information in its URLs that can cause strange behavior in the ISFDB pages when our software tries to embed the image. This information should be removed. Basically, you remove everything between the last two periods, along with one of those periods. So, for example, if Amazon has this URL:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41P7d%2BmDHML._SX321_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

you would remove the part I highlighted and use:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41P7d%2BmDHML.jpg

instead. It is not terribly important if you don't do that -- the link works, and the image will be displayed -- but it looks better, and other moderators will likely tell you the same thing again. :-)

Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 09:18, 13 October 2018 (EDT)

ISBN-10 vs ISBN-13 numbers

Hi, I noticed that you enter ISBN numbers in their ISBN-10 format. That is only valid for books published before 2007. After 2006 books are to be entered using the ISBN-13 format.--Dirk P Broer 10:08, 1 November 2018 (EDT)

Author names

Hi, I am holding a submission from you for Destellos de luna: Pioneros de la ciencia ficción japonesa. You entered the name of Unno Jūza (as he seems to be given in the book, according to a review) in his Japanese form. I would like to know from you how the name of the author is given in the book. That is the name that is to be entered. Afterwards we can variant the story to its Japanese original, and use the Japanese name for the author too.--Dirk P Broer 10:12, 1 November 2018 (EDT)

Pub Series

The ISFDB differentiates publisher series (publisher level series like Ballantine Adult Fantasy) from title series (universe or groupings of books independent of publisher like Dune Universe). Magazines are treated as a title series and should not be given a pub series. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:48, 2 November 2018 (EDT)

Douglas F. Dluzen

Hello,

I had to change the way the name of Douglas F. Dluzen is written. Please see the help page for an explanation on suffixes standartization. Annie 21:26, 15 November 2018 (EST)

Magazine Dating

Magazine dates are a special case. We use the date printed on the cover or the masthead. If it uses a date like Summer 2018, then we enter only the year. We do not use secondary sources to determine exact publishing dates for magazines like we do for books. This is due to the fact that often magazines are printed before the cover date and it causes confusion. For the Kzine issues, they don't list a cover or masthead date, but they do have a copyright statement that lists month & year. That is close enough to add the month in, but we wouldn't add in the day. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:51, 18 November 2018 (EST)

Don Webb

Thank you for finding this. I have separated out Don Webb and Don Webb (editor). I pulled out any records that were obviously the editor. If you see any others that should be moved, please edit the title record and change the author field to "Don Webb (editor)". Thanks again. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:49, 19 November 2018 (EST)

Legal names

Just a reminder that Legal names for authors should be in the "Last, First" format unlike the canonical names. I fixed the one here. Annie 19:37, 24 December 2018 (EST)

Unreal Magazine

For the Unreal Magazine webzine:

  • Title: There should be a comma between the magazine title & the date (ex: "Unreal Magazine, December 31, 2018")
  • Web Pages: As the web page links are to individual stories, they are better placed onto the title records for the story and not for the publication. This is because the magazines are all joined under a single title record which combines all the web page links. Listing 52 web pages under a single title record ends up not being very useful as there is no way to match a link to a magazine. The other option is to also include it in the pub notes field.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:58, 1 January 2019 (EST)

Author image

Sorry, but I had to reject your edit to add a radioactive symbol as an author image (here). This field is for the use of adding images OF the authors, not their avatars, etc. PeteYoung 21:36, 3 February 2019 (EST)

Rob Lopez vs Robert Lopez

Hi, you claim these are two different authors. How was my surprise when they have both written a 'Remember Me Dead -Rob Lopez' & '-Robert Lopez'....What do you think?.--Dirk P Broer 16:26, 9 February 2019 (EST)

As your intended Robert Lopez had no titles/pulications in ISFDB (yet), he was automatically removed.--Dirk P Broer 19:22, 9 February 2019 (EST)

El umbral submission

Hi. I have your submission of El umbral on hold. It's dated 1993-02-15, yet the format is "ebook" -- that combination is very unlikely. The submission says the source is the publisher's website. There I found this, which gives a publication date of 1993-01-01 and dimensions, although it does not say whether it's softcover or hardcover. That page has a Libro digital link to Amazon.com.mx. While the Amazon record says 15 Febrero 1993, the Look Inside (Echa un vistazo) for it shows "Edicion digital: 2013". 2013 makes much more sense for an e-book. There's also a link to a "Pasta blanda" edition that is given the 1993-01-01 date and having dimensions matching those on the publisher's site, so I assume that print edition is paperback. Let me know what you think and what you want to do with this -- I can approve and make changes at the same time, so you don't have to cancel it if it should be different. Thanks. --MartyD 07:10, 21 March 2019 (EDT)

Hello, Marty

Sorry, I haven't been able to respond to any of your messages until now.

You are correct about the publication dates.

Please go ahead and make changes as you see fit.

Many thanks,

T

Sorry, I was away yesterday. I see the submissions are all gone. I did not mean for you to have to cancel them, but I hope you have everything the way you want it to be now. --MartyD 12:29, 23 March 2019 (EDT)

詐欺師の鍵 changes

Sorry, I cannot read the Japanese for the three 詐欺師の鍵-related submissions I have on hold, but I think something is not quite right with two of them. One submission wants to change "詐欺師の鍵 最終回 (Part ? of ?)" to "詐欺師の鍵", but that title record is of type SERIAL and should normally have "(Part m of n)" unless the title itself already distinguishes it from the other parts. The second submission wants to change "詐欺師の鍵" to "詐欺師の鍵 (Part 4 of 5)" but that is being applied to this record, which is SHORTFICTION, not SERIAL. We wouldn't normally have "(Part m of n)" on a SHORTFICTION record, only on a SERIAL record. Seeing that your third submission would change "詐欺師の鍵 最終回 (Part ? of ?)" to "詐欺師の鍵 (Part 5 of 5)", I'm wondering if the first submission should instead be changing "詐欺師の鍵 最終回 (Part ? of ?)" to "詐欺師の鍵 (Part 4 of 5)" and the second submission should be cancelled. Or maybe the first should be using "(Part 3 of 5)" and the second's "(Part 4 of 5)" is correct but should also change the type from SHORTFICTION to SERIAL. Please let me know what you think, or explain more about what you're trying to do and I will be able to help better. Thanks. --MartyD 07:24, 21 March 2019 (EDT)

Transliterations

Hi, would it be very inconvenient for you to give the transliterations of titles and/or names, along with the submission of new records? We would be very much helped with that added information. Thanks in advance!--Dirk P Broer 04:58, 19 April 2019 (EDT)

Unreal Magazine, #3

Hi, I changed your submission for Unreal Magazine, #3 into Unfit Magazine, #3.--Dirk P Broer 03:09, 17 June 2019 (EDT)

The Red Candles and the Mermaid

Hello, there seems something not quite right with this: 1) The stated publisher seems to deal only with shirts; 2) The title is English, so the author's name is expected to be anglicized; 3) There's no content item listed. I've put this on hold for those reasons. Stonecreek 10:07, 3 July 2019 (EDT)

With no answer I've rejected the submission since without further evidence this may well be a fake publication. Stonecreek 17:24, 4 July 2019 (EDT)

病理カプリチオ

Is that book available in Amazon? If so, can you add the ASIN? Thanks! Annie 13:10, 9 July 2019 (EDT)

El Mar del Cielo

When adding chapbooks, please do not forget to add a short story entry as well - unlike the rest of the containers, a chapbook should always contain a short fiction entry. I added it here. If you are planning to import the title later, please say so in the moderator note (As this is a new author, I just added the story). Thanks! Annie 20:11, 17 July 2019 (EDT)

Directory Entry

Directory entries should always be the family name of an author written with Latin characters. So for languages that use non-Latin alphabets, you need the transliterated value, not the actual value. I fixed it here - feel free to edit if this is not the family name. Annie 20:53, 17 July 2019 (EDT)

Sugiura Hinako

Hi, You want to change the legal name of Sugiura Hinako (杉浦 日向子) into 鈴木順子. That would mean that the transliteration of her legal name must change too. In this case to Suzuki Junko, if I am not mistaken.--Dirk P Broer 18:36, 22 July 2019 (EDT)

Author names

Just a gentle reminder that we credit authors as they are credited in the publication (and then variant the titles if needed to get them to the main form of the name). I fixed it here. If you know the Japanese title of this story, please update the parent record. Thanks! Annie 17:35, 23 July 2019 (EDT)

Again: We credit authors as printed (normalized if needed). So please stop adding the English stories with Japanese spelling of the authors - add them with the English names (as printed) and then variant. I fixed this one. Annie 14:36, 26 July 2019 (EDT)

Non-genre magazines

When adding non-genre magazines, a few things to keep in mind:

  • We do not record the covers and webzines cannot really have covers to talk of anyway.
  • When adding a magazine just to add a story, the story author is not added as a magazine editor. Instead we use "Editors of "the name of the magazine".
  • The link to a story goes into the story record after it is created, not on the EDITOR level.

I approved and fixed this publication. Thanks! Annie 18:21, 23 July 2019 (EDT)

Japanese authors

When editing these, would you please also update the following two fields:

  • Transliterated name : How you would write the name in romaji and in another line in Kana considering that most names contain Kanji. If you want to use two different transliteration systems, just add the name in both.
  • Directory Entry - this is the last name of the author, written in romaji.

Thanks. Annie 17:35, 29 July 2019 (EDT)

Same with adding/updating titles and publications - it will be very helpful if you can add the transliterations while you are at it. Annie 17:36, 29 July 2019 (EDT)

Chely Lima titles

I accepted the three submissions for the Chely Lima collection and titles and merged them. Some had Japanese as the language, which I changed to Spanish. I apologize if any of what I did is incorrect.

Anthology vs Collection

If all the stories are by one author, it is a collection. If there are multiple authors, it is an anthology. I fixed it in NOVA 2019年秋号. Any chance you can add transliterations to all the new titles? :) Annie 13:39, 7 August 2019 (EDT)

Sobre los nerds y otras criaturas mitológicas

Hello,

I am holding this one because I have a few questions

  • The only source you are citing is the publisher site but the record there does not match the number of pages.
  • The size of 152 X 228 mm means tp not pb
  • The year and the date do not match the publisher site either.

Can you please clarify all the sources you are using for this record? Thanks! Annie 12:52, 12 August 2019 (EDT)

Various things in Alucinadas III

Hi. I accepted Alucinadas III, but I made several changes, at least some of which are important to keep in mind for future submissions.

  1. Books that collect stories by different authors should be type ANTHOLOGY, not type COLLECTION. COLLECTION is used when the stories are all by the same author(s). So I changed it to ANTHOLOGY.
  2. We normalize capitalization in titles, unless special capitalization is used for some obvious purpose. Here, the presentation of the subtitle in all capital letters appears to be just an artifact of how it is presented, so I converted it to standard case.
  3. "Generic" essay titles that could be used over other text by the same author in another book -- English examples are "Introduction", "Foreword", "Afterword", etc. -- are disambiguated by adding the publication's title in parentheses. We do this regardless of language. In this book, "Prólogo" and "Introducción" qualify, so I added "(Alucinadas III)" to each.
  4. The publisher calls itself "Palabaristas Press", and we already had a publisher record for that, so I adjusted the publisher credit to use that.
  5. You only cited the publisher website as source of data, and they give 252 pages, not 284, so I adjusted the page count to 252.
  6. While I was researching this, I found the rest of the contents listed on the site, so I added those titles, too.

Please look it over and make sure everything looks ok. Thanks. --MartyD 22:52, 14 August 2019 (EDT)

Chapbooks

Just a reminder: When adding chapbooks, you need to add the story as a content item. I did it here. I also cleaned up the pages number - as it is an ebook and your notes did not specify a format that supports it (PDF for example), we leave that in the notes field instead of the pages field. Can you also clarify if the price is supposed to be in US dollars? Annie 14:20, 4 September 2019 (EDT)

Translations

Hello,

Instead of sending notes like here, you can connect the translation itself. In this case, starting with the Japanese title, locate the link "Make This Title a Variant". As we already have the original, here, get the ID and just post it in Option 1. In this case we also need to solve the problem with the series. I will take care of it now and I did that one. Do you want to try the next volume? Annie 15:49, 6 September 2019 (EDT)

The Chapbooks again

1. A short story needs to be added - or a note to the moderator telling us that you will import. I imported it in the one here 2. When you are adding ebooks, please add the ASIN ISBN from Amazon Japan when available. I added it here Thanks! Annie 03:47, 7 September 2019 (EDT)

And a reminder again - I added it here. And it is very useful to add the ASIN -- especially when there is no ISBN. Annie 12:32, 19 September 2019 (EDT)

Susan Palwick

What is the source for this change? Please add a link to your source or an explanation to the moderator notes when submitting such updates. Thanks! Annie 18:47, 7 September 2019 (EDT)

Written in Blood

A few changes when approving these:

  • We normalize titles so can you please normalize when you create titles in English - All caps is not the proper way to add these
  • e-books do not have pages; instead we record printed length in the notes.
  • Amazon usually has prices for new books - please check there and add them (I did now)
  • For any e-book, especially non-ISBN ones, please record the ASIN in its field.

The result of the two books is here.

PS: Thanks for adding the transliteration in the Japanese book you added earlier. Please do not forget that essays with generic names, regardless of the language, need disambiguation. I did it for the Foreword here. :) Annie 13:19, 11 September 2019 (EDT)

tp vs pb

Look at the sizes of the books you are adding. If at least one of the sizes is 19 cm / 7.25', it is tp and not a pb. This one is 5x8 according to amazon - which makes it a tp. :) Annie 22:56, 11 September 2019 (EDT)

Chapbooks once more

Hi, about Chapbooks again: This publication type is a unique ISFDB designation for a separate publication of a single work of SHORTFICTION (q.v.) or a single POEM. In addition to the single SHORTFICTION or POEM content record, such publications may also contain one or more ESSAY and INTERIORART content records. I have four submissions on hold for you where each chapbook contains two serials. That sounds more like a magazine to me.--Dirk P Broer 05:52, 22 September 2019 (EDT)

The ebooks again

  • The number of printed pages should be recorded as a note, not as "pages"
  • Please add the ASIN number - you are checking Amazon as you are using their covers so just copy this as well, please
  • Same for the price.

I updated this one. Adding a date to the note also helps understanding some of the data later (after updates for example). Thanks!

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Anniemod (talkcontribs) .

Los años del silencio

The size of 14,8x21 as defined on the publisher site will make this a tp and not a pb. I changed it. Annie 13:55, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

Authors and names

Author credits in the DB should be as they are in the publication. I fixed this here. If you want the stories to show under the actual native names, you need to variant the stories and make the English names pseudonyms. Thanks! Annie 14:35, 10 October 2019 (EDT)

二十二分間の予言 chapbook submission

Hi. I have your 二十二分間の予言 chapbook submission on hold. It does not include the expected shortfiction contents. I can't tell whether Chapbook is ok and a shortfiction entry of the same title should be added or if this should be something other than a chapbook. Please let me know -- if it is a chapbook I will accept it and add the shortfiction so we don't have an incorrectly configured record. Thanks. --MartyD 06:31, 3 November 2019 (EST)

MartyD: The entry on Amazon.co.jp says it's an "original novel", though it lists 86 pages and is therefore likely a novella. So, it could either be changed over to be a novel or have a novella added to the contents (same title as the chapbook). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:28, 6 November 2019 (EST)
Also, the ASIN is B00TNG7VBS. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:29, 6 November 2019 (EST)
Ok, thanks. I accepted it and added a novella (and the ASIN). --MartyD 07:39, 7 November 2019 (EST)

The One That Comes Before

Why are you removing the ISBN (which is printed and visible in the kindle Look inside and is not that of the tp) and where is the date coming from in this change? Annie 03:45, 7 November 2019 (EST)

Keep in mind that Amazon NEVER shows the ISBNs for ebooks on the page itself -- they can be found either from the publishers, or from Look Inside or in some cases, we have them via the Amazon API. So unless this ISBN belongs to another edition or you can show a statement from the publisher that this book does not have an ISBN, removing it is removing valid data. Annie 03:49, 7 November 2019 (EST)

The Best of Three Crows: Year One

I rejected your submission to add the foreword to The Best of Three Crows: Year One because I didn't see the content you had added. Sorry about that. When you resubmit, you need to do two things. First, disambiguate the entry: "Foreword (The Best of Three Crows: Year One)", so it isn't confused with other forewords. Second, I assume it's on unnumbered pages prior to the other content. Handle this by use "bp", before pagination, as the page number, not a "0". A possible alternative way to number the page would be to use "|0.5". The vertical bar followed by numbers is one way to put items in the content in the order you wish. Bob 10:02, 30 November 2019 (EST)

Generic placeholder cover art

When submitting new or updated information, please don't submit generic placeholder cover art that is found on Amazon (you did that for this publication). Please instead wait for the correct cover art to be added to Amazon and update the record, or upload the correct cover art to ISFDB and then update the record. Thanks! You've been doing a great job with all the Japanese submissions. It makes my work easier. (^_^) ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 23:22, 3 December 2019 (EST)

Erick Mota, Anabel Enríquez and "a.k.a"

Hi. I don't know what you intended with the Erick Jorge Mota Pérez submission I have on hold that doesn't change anything, but if your purpose was to tell the moderators that it's the same author as Erick J. Mota, then you could handle this yourself, if you'd like. Visit http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?300795 and in the Editing Tools section at the left, pick "Make/Remove Alternate Name". In the box that comes up, either enter "Erick J. Mota" for the name or 198473 for the parent record #, and the two will be linked together. Then you should also make the one title credited to his long-form name and make it a variant of a new title using that shorter-form name we are treating as his canonical name. You can do both of these submissions at the same time -- they do not depend on one another.

Try it, it should not be difficult. If you'd rather I did it, or if you need any help, let me know. --MartyD 08:14, 14 December 2019 (EST)

The same applies to your submission about Anabel Enríquez, that I also have on hold. Check which of the two names is used more frequently. We usually want to have the more frequently used one be the "canonical" name (the "parent") and the less frequently used one be the alternate name. Visit the one that is less frequently used, and make it an alternate for the other. And then also make any titles credited to that less frequently used name variants of new titles credited to the canonical name (or to existing records already using the canonical name). Again, let me know if need help or want me to do it. Anything you try will be moderated, so you cannot hurt anything by trying it. --MartyD 08:20, 14 December 2019 (EST)
I went and did these things and rejected the submissions since they did not change anything. --MartyD 11:26, 21 December 2019 (EST)

"Prólogo" in Lo sintético: Narraciones sobre robots, seres poshumanos e inteligencias artificiales

Hi. I accepted your submission of Lo sintético: Narraciones sobre robots, seres poshumanos e inteligencias artificiales, but I made two changes to Prólogo. It was classified as SHORTFICTION, but I think it's probably an ESSAY -- it's a little hard to tell from the publisher's site and Amazon, since neither shows us the text. So I changed the type. Then, as an essay, we would treat any form of "Prologue" as a generic title that might be used for multiple different works (for example, if the same editor wrote another prologue for another anthology, it might also be titled "Prólogo"), so I added "(Lo sintético)" to it to disambiguate. See the "Standard Titles" bullet in Help:Screen:EditTitle#Title. --MartyD 08:32, 14 December 2019 (EST)

Anthology vs Collection II

Hi. As Annie said previously, a publication type of ANTHOLOGY is used for compilations of short fiction by different authors, while a publication type of COLLECTION is used for compilations of short fiction by the same author(s). So I accepted 契約 鈴木いづみSF全集 but then changed its type from ANTHOLOGY to COLLECTION. I also provided this link in the notes. I see the write-up on that page provides the names of some of the works included in the collection. You could add those, and just say in the notes that contents are partial. I would do it, but I can't really work with the original Japanese. Thanks. --MartyD 10:56, 29 December 2019 (EST)

Under Her Black Wings

Hello, I wanted to let you know that the way you do your submissions can be improved. For example, your submissions for the anthology Under Her Black Wings had a few problems:

  • You submitted three new publication records all at the same time, two for ebook (incidentally(?) this 2nd ebook publication record was a duplicate of the first), one for pb. Doing it this way requires subsequent merging of the individual titles - both on anthology level as well as for each individual contents title - as was needed in this case. It is better to submit a single record, wait for its approval, and only then use the 'Clone This Pub' (left menu, below 'Editing Tools') to create the additional publication records - less work for both of us :).
  • You (accidentally?) had the title record The Riddled Path twice in the publication's Contents section - I have removed one of them
  • A Foreword is not normally short fiction, but an ESSAY (unless it's -really- a story, of course...) - I've changed that for you too

I've merged and adjusted your submissions - the result is here - have a look and let me know it's OK for you like this
PS. Don't forget to update the Author record for new authors ('Edit Author Data' - left menu), at least with their working language (if known). See here: Alys Hobbs, Brandon Scott, Carmen Baca, and Charlotte Munro - If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask! MagicUnk 07:50, 13 January 2020 (EST)

Aaand, I forgot to add: for English titles, "and", "or", "the", "a", "an", "for", "of", "in", "on", "by", "at", "from", "with", and "to" are not capitalized, see here :) MagicUnk 12:31, 13 January 2020 (EST)

Clarkesworld

Hi, are you sure that this now was transmutated into a webzine? Stonecreek 12:08, 27 January 2020 (EST)

Clarkesworld has always been available as a webzine. To date, we've only cataloged the webzine through 2010 and then switched it over to ebook versions[1]. However, the webzine version still exists and could be indexed also. Though unless someone is willing to take on doing all the back issues, I wouldn't recommend adding a one off webzine version. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:13, 27 January 2020 (EST)
Thanks! I'll wait for one more day, and then intend to approve of the submission, but change the publication into either the ebook or the print version. Stonecreek 23:30, 27 January 2020 (EST)

Critical Point

Sevens months is to far away for a publication date. We have found that there tends to be a lot of changes between an announced publication and it's final sale. As such, we typically limit new pubs to 3 months out. I made an exception for Burning Roses, but seven month is to far. By the way, new pubs from established publishers will automatically get picked up & be added by Fixer (a bot designed to add new publications when a few months out) so there isn't really a need to add these manually. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:47, 10 March 2020 (EDT)
