Note: Announced in 2016 with the first awards given in 2017. Covers "science fiction, fantasy, stories of magic and traditional belief, alternative histories, horror and strange stuff that might not fit in anywhere else." To be eligible, nominees must be Africans. Africans are defined as:
- citizens of African countries
- people born on the continent and raised there for substantial periods of time
- citizens or people born on the continent who live abroad
- people who have at least one African parent or
- Africans without papers, and
- some migrants to African countries.
