According to Robert Reginald's ''Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature: A Checklist, 1700-1974, Volume 2: Contemporary Science Fiction Authors II'', p. 987, Magidoff received a Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1932, then worked as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press and NBC between 1935 and 1949, as a freelance writer and lecturer in 1949-1958, as a Lecturer in Russian at the University of Michigan in 1958-1961 and as a Professor of Russian Literature at New York University in 1961-1970. After working as an American journalist in the Soviet Union in the late 1930s and 1940s, Magidoff was accused of spying and expelled from the USSR in April 1948, an experience that he described in his 1949 book In Anger and Pity: A Report on Russia.
