Note: Novelist and philanthropist. Taught at Royal College in Mauritius from 1861 to 1867. Began collaborating with James Rice in 1871, producing 14 novels. Besant wrote his first standalone novel in 1882, and wrote 32 novels after Rice's death. He helped to found the Society of Authors in 1884 and edited its journal.
