Joan Delano Aiken had a passion for ghost stories. She began working for BBC Radio in 1944 and later in the United London office as the Features Editor of Argosy magazine and as a copywriter in an advertising agency. She took up full-time writing in 1962, producing a large number of fantasies, ghost stories and mysteries for children and adults. She also wrote several historical romances and sequels to works by Jane Austen. She was married to the American landscape painter Julius Goldstein.
