Note: Name identification by Hathi Trust and the National Union Catalogue. Bleiler, "Science-Fiction: The Early Years", feels that this is "unlikely". However, while "Henry A. Gaston" was a lawyer in Chicago, both the law books of "Henry A. Gaston" and the spiritualism book of "H. A. Gaston" were published by the same San Francisco publishing company, "A.L. Bancroft", so this seems likely to us.
"Fifty Years of Masonry in California, Volume 1", by Edwin Allen Sherman, discusses a Mason "Henry A. Gaston" who is a Mason in 1858, was appointed as a Master Mason in 1862, withdrew in 1864, and was "a distinguished lawyer". There appears to have been a close connection between his Masonic Temple and the Grand Lodge of Illinois. It thus seems reasonable to believe that he left the California Masonic Temple, moved to Chicago to become a lawyer there, while maintaining a relationship with California.
