Zeuschner's Edgar Rice Burroughs citing research by Burroughs scholar Bill Ross, states that the first printing is bound in red cloth with a horizontal weave. Zeuschner further states that the frontispiece has the words "he said" at the end of the caption, and that the publisher's name on the jacket is enclosed in a rectangle with the corners trimmed.
