Note: Chicago 1872 to 1887 117 and 119 State Street (1881) Successor to S. C. Griggs & Co., from 1844 Succeeded 1887 by A. C. McClurg & Co. The stationer W.W. Barlow & Co. was founded in 1884, soon to be S.C. Griggs & Co., and briefly Griggs, Bross & Co. from 1848. Alexander C. McClurg (1832–1901) joined the bookseller and publisher in 1859 and became junior partner after his Civil War service. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 ruined Griggs and the company became Jansen, McClurg & Co. in 1872. McClurg became senior partner in 1887. --Wikipedia (multiple articles)
