Barlow & Co. was founded in 1884, soon to be S.C. Griggs & Co., and briefly Griggs, Bross & Co. from 1848. Alexander C. McClurg (1832–1901) joined the bookseller and publisher in 1859 and became junior partner after his Civil War service. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 ruined Griggs and the company became Jansen, McClurg & Co. in 1872. McClurg became senior partner in 1887. --Wikipedia (multiple articles)
