• Note: Founded from S. Fischer when owner Gottfried Bermann-Fischer fled Germany about 1932. The company published from Vienna, Austria until 1938 when they then fled to Sweden, continuing to publish from Stockholm. (Some 1938 books were published in Vienna and some in Stockholm.) The family appears to have returned to Frankfurt, Germany about 1947, although they continued to publish from Sweden as well. In 1950, they regained control of the "S. Fischer" name, and returned to publishing under that name. Because of these moves, all books by this publisher should list the city from which they were published.
