Note: As the dating of the Marabout can be particularly complex (and the books may downright misleading as neither the line of the last page nor the catalogue, nor the "Inédit" mention are reliable), here are some diverse known presentation variants and the way to differentiate them :
Mid 1969 (#324) to late 1971 (#388): the title is written horizontally on the spine. All first printings have on bottom of the bc the following "Bibliothèque Marabout Publication Hebdomadaire XX/No YY" where XX is the year of publication (69 to 71) and YY is the week of publication in the year indicated. This is followed by the price category (a number of stars). Some titles have a letter of unknown meaning between the week and the price category (
this one has "71/No7 A"). The reprints during this period (
like this one) don't have the above text on bc, only the price category somewhere in the bottom of the bc (note that this may be not always the case, see
this reprint).
Late 1971 (#391) to late 1972 (#414): the title is now written vertically but the "Bibliothèque Marabout Publication Hebdomadaire XX/No YY" is still present (from 71/52 to 72/40). There are NO star(s) on the spine. The reprints during this period don't have the above text on bc, only the price category somewhere in the bottom of the bc.
Late 1972 (#417) to Mid-1976 (#584): the title is also wriiten vertically on the spine but there ARE stars (price category markers, ranging from 1 to 6) on the bottom of the spine (they are also on bc). The "Publcation hebdomadaire..." bit is no more present. Note that the cover is now usually glossy (notably for later titles). The last titles under this presentation have a different layout of the bc (with vertical stripes instead of horizontal one) that will be carried over for the the next type. The reprints during this period have the same characteristics (glossy cover and stars on spine).
Mid-1976 (#591) to Late 1977 (#639): some characteristics stayed the same (glossy covers, vertical title) but the stars on bc have disappeared. The price category is now given on bc by a "X-0" domino, X being a number between 2 and 5. Two exceptions: #624 ("0-4" domino) and the reprint of #523 ("6-3" domino). The layout of the cover has also changed (but not the illustrations for reprints, which was not always the case before), including the typeface. There is a line with "Bibliothèque Marabout / Science-Fiction" on the cover, usually at the bottom. The differences of this new layout are quite clear for the reprints of the period, compare
this printing of the previous type to
that one of the type evoked here. As usual the reprints during this period have these characteristics. Note the departure from mainly "black" design for
this title.
1978 (#700) to the end? (#900): there are very few titles involved but multiple variants exists. There is a new cover layout (compare
this supposed 1978 printing with
this earlier printing) and another one for the more fantasy/horror titles. The title is still written vertically but is now (usually as there are exceptions!) in "french style" (from bottom to top) instead of the previous "anglo-saxon" way (from top to bottom). The price category is given in bracket on spine (e.g. [04]) and as a domino on bc. The number in the publication series is prefixed by BM (e.g. "BM900") on the last titles. The typical Marabout blurb seems to have disappeared from the cover of the reprints (compare
this with
that earlier reprint).
In the mid-80s, the spec-fic lines seemed to have been dissolved into the general line (like
this supposed 1986 publication).
Note that all these remarks apply to the "Bibliothèque Marabout - Fantastique" publication series and that such a cataloging work should be done in the future for the 1960s titles that have the same level of complexity.
