Note: First published in the San Francisco Examiner, October 20, 1889.
Synopsis: In a Civil War battle, Captain Coulter is told to take control of a house and use it as a gunnery station. He is reluctant because, unbeknownst to his superiors, that is Coulter's own house, and his wife and child will be killed when it is taken over. Having set up the gun at such a cost, Coulter is absolutely determined to keep it firing.
