Note:
10 stories with introduction by Dashiell Hammett
The stories are 10 of the 21 in the 1931 anthology Creeps by Night: Chills and Thrills, which were selected by Hammett from public nominations (see that parent collection).
Unknown: whether Hammett revised or the publishers cut the introduction
Jointly the 1961 anthologies Creeps by Night (see) and The Red Brain contain 20 of the 21 stories. The exception is "A Woman Alone with Her Soul" (1912) by Thomas Bailey Aldrich, the oldest of the 21, which was dropped as of 1932 with the second printing of the John Day edition.
The 20 are not divided in tens by publication date, nor as first and second halves of the original sequence.
