Note: A psychological horror story, with no more than slight hints of the fantastic to it. First published in Atlantic Monthly, August 1904.
Synopsis: Wyant, a visitor in Italy, wishes to view the Leonardo in the house of a possessive and obsessive doctor who used his daughter's inheritance to buy it. "The girl seems to hate the painting even though she knows a lot about it. Later, Wyant learns that as long as the doctor has his claws on that painting, the girl cannot marry the man she loves."
