Synopsis: A "non-sexist" juvenile novel. A brother and sister playing in a cave on St. John's Eve, a pre-Christian holiday, meet the goddess Ceres, fairy people, and other magical beings. They have adventures in a gender-free children's country, where they are "increasingly liberated from their own society's gendered notions of personal identity" (Daphne Patai).
