Synopsis: Michel Tremblay's first novel is totally unlike anything else he has written – a powerful fantasy fiction that stretches from present day Quebec to the plunder of colonial Africa and then to a magical world at the end of time. The novel revolves around and within a mysterious egg-shaped stone which, at certain phases of the moon, allows its owner entrance to a strange other-worldly city, partitioned into separate districts and ruled by the remnants of an earlier civilization. A brilliant fantasy in its own right, The City in the Egg shows the young Tremblay experimenting with transformations from the ordinary to the uncanny, setting the scene for his Belles-Soeurs series in the theatre and his "Plateau Mont-Royal" novels.
"At the end of Tremblay's career one will likely be able to sew together all his plays and novels and discover that we have been privileged to read the works of a veritable Quebecois Marcel Proust." --Canadian Book Review Manual
