Note: Originally serialised in The Royal Magazine from January to June 1901. Collected in hardcover in September 1901 according to "Shiel and Heard: The Neglected Thinkers of SF" by Sam Moskowitz, Fantastic, August 1960.
Synopsis: Around 1900, the author receives a packet of writings of a psychic, who recounts her vision of the multi-decade diary of an arctic explorer of the future, the first to reach the north pole; but during his multiyear trek, an unknown eruption temporarily poisons the atmosphere with cyanide, killing all human and animal life, sparing only the arctic latitudes and leaving him the last man on earth.
