Synopsis: The narrator, whose name the reader will never know, but who will eventually be renamed "l'Homme" ("the Man"), wakes up one morning in Paris to find everyone dead around him. He is progressively led to think that the phenomenon is world-wide. After an attempt to survive alone and much inner debate of a philosophical and mystical nature, he sets off looking for other people, feeling that he has been chosen to start mankind afresh.
