1812Large & Small (Grosse & Kleine) editions of this book: "The success of the 1823 English selection by John Edgar Taylor made Wilhelm Grimm decide to select fifty tales from the 1819 German Edition for a 'Small Edition' which explicitly catered to children and also had illustrations. From then on, Small Editions and Large Editions (with, finally (in 1857) 201 tales and 10 religious tales) appeared regularly in German. The fact that Wilhelm Grimm called both Editions Kinder- und Hausmärchen, and only differentiated between them with the addition of "Kleine" vs. "Grosse" Ausgabe, was to be a major source of confusion, especially for readers, translators, and even scholars who are not aware that the former contains only one fourth of the stories of the latter." [Cay Dollerup, The Grimm Tales in 19th Century Denmark, Target: International Journal of Translation Studies, 5 #2. 191-214. (1993)]     Combined with the fact that Wilhelm Grimm would alter, rewrite, or replace tales in each edition added to this confusion. The Large editions included scholarly notes which were omitted from the Small editions. The Small editions were illustrated. The last editions overseen by Wilhelm Grimm were the 1857 & 1858 editions. The "Large" editions are listed here. The "Small" editions, which we have not yet included in the ISFDB, were published in: 1825, 1833, 1836, 1839, 1841, 1844, 1847, 1850, 1853, and 1858. There was also an unauthorized 1826 printing of the 1825 Small Edition.
